I was overjoyed to discover your channel and someone who appreciates the Granada Holmes series as much as me. Silver Blaze one of my favourites with Barkworth. I remember being allowed to stay up til 10pm watching the series on a school night in the 80s. It is repeated regularly on ITV4 in the UK every day and has been for years but I am always at work, thank god I have my DVD box set to turn to when I need it.

Peter Barkworth was one of the few method actors in the UK and regularly taught drama students.

Looking forward to this and all the others to follow. Peter Barkworth was a great actor. I'd love to see if you can track down the boy who sticks out his tongue in the titles and the policeman who goes to clip him round the ear. Every time I see the show I wonder what happened to them

This is another awesome episode. There are so many things I love in it. The interactions between Holmes and Colonel Ross are so fine. Sherlock's reaction to his remark about amateurs is great, just like when he complains of the crime scene that had been trampled over by the police. I also love the scenes where Holmes and Watson follow the hoofprints of Silver Blaze, Jeremy looks so gorgeous in that long hoodied coat 🥰 When they have lunch (dinner?) with Ross and he starts to slurp his soup, the way Holmes looks at Watson always makes me laugh. In this scene Jeremy says so much without words - namely, that you can have lots of money but you can't buy style and behaviour. It's an acting masterclass. Looking forward to Wisteria Lodge. Freddie Jones as Inspector Baynes is one of my favourite guest stars, he's so top-notch in the role!

@AMT Thank you. I'm so glad that there are still so many people who love him and the series.

1:17:10 Almost certainly the real reason is there was just no direction for the background actors, but if we want to play the game (which, of course!), I think a somewhat plausible "in-canon" reason would be maybe in late 1800's Dartmoor the folks wouldn't be used to seeing a world famous detective, or celebrity, like Holmes, so they're transfixed on his figure! Another amazing episode of my favorite podcast!

Perfect "in-canon" explanation!

I'm so glad you mentioned the "Mrs. Hudson! We're off to Dartmoor!" line. It's one of my favorite lines in the whole series. I love the Boys' Adventure quality of it, as if he's gleefully telling their mom that they won't be home till supper because they're off to fight pirates all day in their tree fort.

When you played the "Liebestod" from Tristan und Isolde, I flashed on "The Red Circle". That is the song that's being sung when Holmes and Watson take Leverton to the opera at the end of the episode.

Great episod! And the calculation is a simple one. This was demonstrated by the late Swedish physicist Hans-Uno Bengtsson in Trepiporsproblem och bagateller - 7 studier i Sherlock Holmes (Ellerströms 1993).

Hi Gus and Luke, great episode again chaps. I was surprised when you mentioned in your commentary about the horse race being filmed at Bangor on dee. I live not far from there and been there many times (not won much money) and never realised. I ll look next time I go to see if I recognise any of it from the show, anyways keep up the good work look forward go the next one.

If you want a comfortable point to access Doctor Who, start with the series 14 final serial 'The Talons of Weng-Chiang' Tom Baker in a deerstalker as the Doctor in Victorian London, shades of Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu and the real life Chung Ling Soo as well as an immense rodent that could or could not be from an Indonesian isle. 6 episodes at 25 minutes apiece. If it's the only Doctor Who you ever watch it is *THE* Doctor Who to watch.

IMDb credits Derek Pykett as the "Gipsy" in "Silver Blaze". Does anybody know where this "gipsy" appears in the episode? The 2 stable lads sleeping in the loft when Edith wakes them up...one is "Bill". Is the other one "Nobby"? I can never make out what name she's using. John Hawkesworth's name isn't spelled this way?
@sherlockpodcast
@sherlockpodcast Жыл бұрын
It is spelled correctly in the opening credits, but his writing credit (once the show starts) is missing the E from his last name. Yep... "Nobby"! (not from the story) Curious about that "gipsy" now too! Will have to do some digging...

@@sherlockpodcast Ah, now I see it. Should've caught that. Thx. Just curious, did David John ("Ned") comment on his handling of the dog? They clearly wound the dog up to get it to show its teeth, then when he came into frame and bent down to calm the dog, it looked like it initially went to nip at him. And did he indicate what it was that they did to get the dog to bark & snarl so viciously?
@sherlockpodcast
@sherlockpodcast Жыл бұрын
@@dantheman5745 He didn't say much. He mentioned that he got a brief crash-course on handling the horses and dogs, but just the days he was on set. We should have asked more about the dog! :)
