As someone who's trying to minimize my life again, I've been embracing "cluttercore" for the time being. Having everything out of boxes and closets has made me realize the things I don't actually like, need, or want. It also made me realize just how much I actually have and has made me more active in my decluttering since I can see it all. It's easy to ignore things when they're "not in the way", but if I look at how much stuff I have and how it gets in the way of other aspects of my life, I'm more inclined to pass it on.

I decluttered some fairly big ticket items that I really wanted to be gone ASAP! I posted them on Market Place for FREE. I had the best time giving them to people who were THRILLED to get them, in disbelief that I would give them for FREE. It felt better than donating them to an agency that probably wouldn't accept them anyway. Seeing the joy and smile on someone's face was so worth it! 💞

I would love to see you on a panel discussion with The Minimal Mom Dawn (something) and Dana K. White (A Slob comes Clean). Yes, they can be prescriptive, but they give specific ways to do the physical aspects of decluttering like - take a trash bag and a donation box into the area you’re going to declutter and start getting rid of trash. I would love to hear that discussion and think it would be exceedingly helpful to many people.

Goodwill may be the easiest for Minimalists and “The Minimalists” but my journey of downsizing picked up speed when I found a local charity(children’s home) to donate to. Suddenly I felt good about passing things on. I would encourage people who have a hard time letting go of things, because EVERYTHING has meaning to us to find a charity you feel really good about supporting with your donations.

As someone who lives in cluttercore, i just like to be surrounded in things i like. I have no problem getting rid of things i don’t need or don’t like. And im not a hoarder, and i can keep my room clean even if it looks crazy. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean that something is wrong with us for liking what we like. Yes there is people who are keeping these things and have an emotional problem with it, but most are just decorating.

@@Goober_gobbler#Cluttercore is not my thing, but I Googled the trend to learn more, and read a couple articles on it. It’s not just about collecting clutter. It’s (ideally) about creating spaces for curated collections of things that have personal meaning to someone, and reflect something about their personality and interests. The operative word here is “curated.” I looked at a few different example photos online, and while it’s still not for me, I can at least understand and appreciate the idea behind it. Art appreciation is not about practical utility. It’s about what gives people joy and meaning to look at. For example, you may not appreciate a rare Picasso, but an art enthusiast may very well get a lot of joy from viewing that master’s work.

I agree, this channel just bashes something they dont understand in my opinion. Not everyone thinks minimalism is healthy either, it can also interpreted as mental illness (calming inner chaos and anxiety by removing everything on the outside). We have a fun gaming room in the basement that displays collections of games, retro gaming items, funkos, LEGOs, Harry Potter merch. Its on the walls and shelves, in display cases around a gaming area. It feels like a fun cave down there and we love to hang out there at night sometimes. The "clutter" is there to set the mood and make it not feel like a basement and the rest of the house is very neat, tidy, no "stuff" like books, merchandise etc. So cluttercore can be intentional and its not hoarding!

That cluttercore picture made me want to come through the screen with a trash bag. This trend is not a surprise though, over the last 5-10 years people have started to wear their issues like a badge or announce them like an award, as a society we have transitioned away from striving for the best self and embracing the worst self.

I was at more peace when I was poor and couldn’t afford new things. As a single mom the kids and I would make it a challenge walking around the neighborhood founding the most beautiful leaves . With simple straight pins we would pin to the wall turning them into beautiful art ! One year we changed it up and actually make a map of the USA on the wall.

I honestly think that cluttercore is something that is trying to justify people buying more stuff. I am still a teenager and we are so easy to influence. Cluttercore is another way to let teens buy a room full of stuff so we feel more miserable, AND THEN BUY MORE STUFF!!.

I had a hard time donating and I spent so much time trying to sell my stuff. So I tried a new method. Every time we were blessed with something for example my son received a bunch of clothes, gift cards and new toys for Christmas. I would donate what we were no longer using to non profit organizations or give it to someone I knew who would appreciate it. I would see it as the money I would have made in sales came in form as these gifts. As time went on donating/letting go became so much easier and less stressful because I had become attached to those items. Our 600ft sq ft apartment for 3 people feels more spacious then ever before and I see how happy we all are with less stuff. Less is more

I think Cluttercore may go all the way back to the Victorians, when there was a burst of prosperity (for some people) and we wanted to show the items we had collected. We crocheted antimacassars and dresser scarves, and made crazy quilts out of luxury fabrics from clothes nobody could use any longer. It was showing off, in a way, but it was also self-expression. (Oops, I left out china-painting.) The word I am looking for is embellishment.

As an architectural designer I see a similar approach to clutter being implemented to the physical house itself, largely due to social media (and the evolution of the standard kit home). Mixing and mashing architectural styles, textures, and colors to the facade in an attempt to create a “Homie feeling home”. For example if you research “modern farmhouse” you will quickly go from a classic white aesthetic to a clusterfu** of materials.

Some of the things you said made me think of how some hoarders, will basically lie to themselves about their hoarding issues, by organizing rows & rows of laundry detergent bottles, jars, milk bottles, etc w/ screws & other misc bits & pieces of stuff. Thinking that if it's organized in piles 5 ft or more high w/very little walking space, then everything is fine & they don't have a problem.

I think the woman who is struggling to get rid of her supplies would ifeel so much better if she found some places to donate her supplies to that would put it to good use. Nah man, I’d never be able to function like that Clutter-core picture. My ADHD brain says, “time to clean and organize!!!” I would not stop until it looked perfect…meaning I’d be stuck in a vicious cycle of cleaning and organizing continuously. Nope! Been there, done that and got the t-shirt and not going back to that kind of life. I used to clean my house continuously. I now enjoy the free time from having so few possessions that cleaning takes like an hour or so a week and the rest of my time (that I’m not working 😅) is MINE=FREEDOM. I give away stuff. I don’t care what it costs. If it doesn’t serve me, gone. I used to sell, but don’t like all of the listing and packaging and taking it to the post office. I take things to the goodwill or the women’s shelter. I figure maybe my really nice item that I just don’t use can make someone else’s day when they find it cheap.

When I was younger it was easy to have lots of things beautifully displayed in my bedroom - on my work desk and my dresser for example. I would diligently dust these things every couple months. It was enjoyable. But once I moved out of home and had to look after more than just one living space, it just was no longer worth the effort. It took away time from cleaning more important areas like the shower. So I've substantially reduced my displays to a small corner next to my work desk. Perhaps it's like that for some of these people. Easy to maintain now, but maybe not so much when life changes

I've started clearing things out and now he says "the walls look bare" which he hates 🤦🏼‍♀️ we have some thrift store art that I can't stand, but he he's emotionally attached to every piece. Perhaps "cluttercore" is a TRUE open & honest visual inventory of one's belongings. Is the young lady in the photo in danger? Can she not escape from her perch atop her stool? Looks like she's being open & honest about ALL her belongings. Is there a "minimalist" here who can say they do not now nor have they ever had "cluttercore" hidden away in "clutter coffins"? Boxes? Behind closed doors? Attics? Cellars? Storage units? Etc? (have we been true, open, and honest with ourselves - for most, it's a work in progress) Minimalists living in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.....just sayin'.

It sounds like Regini is more in need of unloading the stuff than earning money from the stuff. The financial cost of it is less than the emotional cost at this point. If she is burning out on doing the selling/organizing herself, she could have a tech-smart teenager to do the online selling for her, and the profits could go to the teen's college fund. Turn the clutter into a kindness. Just an idea.

It’s rebellion against the declutter/minimalist trends and by acting proud of the clutter, they have a mechanism to not actually deal with it. If they were actually okay with the clutter, this trend would not exist. They would be at peace with their things and would not feel they must make some kind of demonstration with it.

To say that you have some observations and not judgements and then to call this a "mental illness disguised as a design trend...." Not judging? Are you a mental health professional? Did the person in the picture say that their stuff makes them stressed, worried, depressed, or upset? I think we should be careful not to assume that others feel the way we do from our stuff.

Not a fan of the clutter core trend. My clutter issue is clothes, shoes, children’s toys, broken electronic devices, books, magazines, fancy boxes, cardboard boxes, bags, kids costumes, electronic devices came in, cords, cables, paper clutter, blankets, quilts, stationary, art & craft items, old baby items. I buy things trying to get good value on something that will last. But I find things don’t last. They get damaged, stained, dirty, and obsolete. In my mind I think ‘this thing was supposed to last’ or ‘we may need it sometime’ or ‘I should sell it & get some money back’ or ‘I don’t know what to do with that item’. I do big clear outs once or twice per year, and some smaller clear outs but its not enough to keep up with it.

I can't imagine displaying everything I don't use or want. Sell it on ebay, donate it to charity and clear it out!!! What the ... words fail me. Are these people nuts? Clutter makes you ill! The average American home has 500,00 items, I actually have less than 5000 items, and even that seems excessive. Just completing your 30 day challenge, I only have 28 items to go and it's day 18, so I've absolutely aced it! Will be doing a weekly challenge every month, after this ie 28 items a month. I do feel I am almost happy with what I have left at the moment, but haven't discounted re-evaluting the amount we own at a later date. When I buy something I always do the one in one out rule, but sometimes, it's one in two or three out. Stuff does not make you happy, loving people who are important to you, being kind, learning while living in the present, and enjoying nature and experiences have so much value.

When I first saw that picture it reminded me of a rental space at an antique mall, and let's face it, a lot of the stuff you see at antique malls aren't true antiques. They are just someone else's clutter that they are trying to get rid of and make some money on the side. I've been tempted to do this myself but I don't think the cost of a rental space would be justified if not enough of the stuff was sold each month. For me, Ebay would also take up a lot of time and cost in order to ship the merchandise and now that any profits made over $600 have to be reported to the IRS, would it even be worth it.

Addressing Regini's problem, I agree with many others that donating to a charitable cause might help her let go of the stuff that's clearly weighing her down. Maybe she could even start something herself, like a letters against loneliness campaign where she provides the materials required and connects participants, arts and crafts being sold against donations for the local shelter, etc. Or partner up with some artsy or creative people and give an arts and crafts or handlettering workshop she could charge a small fee for participation/materials, thereby enabling herself and others to actually enjoy her 'clutter' and getting rid of some in the process. Or Regini's part of an online community of like-minded people and could try to swap some stuff if there is other arts and crafts materials she's still using and looking for? I really feel for her, it sounds like the stuff, and even worse, the sunk cost and loss in value, is getting to her. Good luck, Regini!

Clutter core looks like hoarding. If they keep and display everything they love, they would eventually run out of surfaces to display things could this work for a extreme hoarder and a visual organiser then this stuff isn't Out of Mind Out of Sight. Could this make them see what they own in an intentional way by hanging things All Over the walls but yet not to the extreme as the picture by keeping floors clear and making it follow safe living guidelines for fires medical emergency ect by actually making safe removable spacers for those that horde so places stay safe without rebound? If you see you own something you probably won't buy 20 of them cos you can find it and access it and when things are stored away hidden and forgotten that attachment of scarcity comes out when you eventually find it again making it extremely hard to let go of. Talking from experience of every time I opened my sentimental box once a year. Taking that stuff out and forcing myself to use it or look at it regularly reduced my need to keep half of it. I have a friend who does "clutter core" before it was a thing really well he is a book, art, and antique/trinket collector it looks great and vintage with a mix of colonial, arts and crafts, and Baroque. That picture to me feels overdone and poorly executed clutter core.

#Cluttercore is not my thing, but I Googled the trend to learn more, and read a couple articles on it.

The clutter-core trend is just a reiterating of high school trends of poster covered walls. It's not new, it's not a problem. There's also a ton of micro apartments where the only storage is wall space so it's used as decorative overload. Maximilist gallery walls are no better, just seen as "an aesthetic choice" instead of just too many decor pieces. If anything, clutter-core display of used items is more practical and closer in line with minimalist ideology than gallery wall aesthetes.

If the people stay cluttered and depressed, what happens, then they start to need medicine …medicine that they pay for .doctors become more relevant. Everything is so spiritual and people do not understand ..I am a clean and “organized” I have spoken with my son (who once said he would have to stay in an hotel on a visit because my home was “busy,” I have cleared out some things and I feel automatically better. It’s kind of what a smoker does to the body after day one and two and three after they stop smoking, but I can fill this on the inside and the outside. There is legit more sunlight coming into my home air, able to get through and I can find some shit 🙌🏾🥳

Loved this convo about the crafts. And $5000 for a year of peace of mind …. So cheap! And the example of that rug and all that wasted time coordinating with people that do t show up … I. Feeling that way about the buy nothing group. It’s atressful. I’m tired of chasing people down. Trying to remember who got what. Forgetting to. Leave something out and then volunteering to drive it to them. What a waste of my time and energy. I’m getting so sick of it. It’s not bringing me peace to give away. I gotta go to donate in mass now and then throw away.

Or would she spend $30,000 to repurchase it today? If not, Time to donate or sell cheap to move it. Another point is that even antiques aren't worth the money they used to be. Huge difference between what we pay for something and what they are worth second hand even if never used. Either you own your stuff or any items that stress you, own you.

Are they going to ignore that you pay to have a house and if it's functioning as a storage unit it's a very expensive storage unit? She can.gain the 30k if she gets rid of it and downsizes if shes actually concerned about money.

I agree with all you are saying but wondering how the girl would feel being discussed, I know you said there is no judgment which I appreciate you saying. Is she a model or the actual girl that has so much❓were there copyright issues using the photo. I am a huge fan of the three of you but feeling protective of her. The photo caused me anxiety ❗️

Hmmm, I think it’s really off putting to call the photo of clutter core a “mental illness.” Without a doubt, true hoarding is a mental illness, but you’re seeing one closet in this person’s home. My closet looks very similar, and it’s not stressful for me. I find so much joy from wearing my fun shoes.

I understand the preference for busyness. Personally, I like minimalist interiors/lifestyles because I have, and like, my busy mind. "Mental decluttering" isn't for me because I like and am energized by the intellectual and creative stimulation. Other people are more externally creative and exploratory and feel bored and deprived by minimalist spaces. I love the differences in temperament, HOWEVER, in the external physical world there is a very real need for time and effort-consuming maintenance of all these things. I'm immediately struck by how impractical the image used as an example is. At least have CLOSED display cases to protect and display the nick knacks so they don't need dusting so often and all you usually need to do is polish the outside of the display unit.

Hey hey guys, I just copyrighted à new pathology clutterfatigue. You ve all known it and erased it yo the core. Tak for useful tips but above all for ideas, insight, philosophy, psychology and intercultural views. Because ,growing up in a very matérialistes country I had difficultés all my life when people went plastic in India or Africa. People thought I was abusive for not wishing them to plunge into the superficial sugarcoated plastic one way use society. An economy without any other outcome than Doomsday sort of scenarios. So whenever possible here or there I tend to try to support durable eco local développent with coopérative spirit and close to nature. I mean, Ryan surfing the nearby Ocean is a better smell then Elon Musk in his Tesla or taking a flight for a week-end in Cancun. And anybody else, any other country will just go with the flow if that's the spiral they wanna be in. Not up to me to be stressed about that, to impose, KC ( never get your name, so sorry ) would say , see I learnt from you, but I will have to inspire. Merci
