Thanks for the short and informative video bob. My question is; is it possible to upgrade the CPU and do you have any resources for compatible upgrades for the Dell latitude rugged series? I have a 5414 CPU with a i5 and want to upgrade to a I7 or 9. I've read conflicting articles and forms that say it is or isn't possible and I can't find any videos of people replacing the CPU and showing the laptop get to post I've also checked the Dell site itself but all the replacement parts they sell are basic parts.
@Bobjohnson4 ай бұрын
With most of these rugged laptops, the CPU is soldered on to the system board. This makes it nearly impossible to change and we would recommended that it is not worth the risk. Hopefully, this answers your question, thanks for watching.

i bought this laptop for 160. works great! only issue is like you stated the hinges and maybe the audio! It only seems to have sound on one side. i guess i am not used to it having used my strix 15 for the past few years. i will have to see about getting the hinges tightened. Runs very smooth.

Is there a repair to sort the hinges from having the flop
@Bobjohnson Жыл бұрын
What you can do is remove the screen, and you will see the hinge is a simple clamp-style hinge. You can squeeze the assembly tighter around the hinge. A bit of a hack but can give you a little more life out of the hinges.

My Company uses the Rugged 5414 for our Field Tech’s and would really like to see if there was a way to simply tighten the loose hinges on the LCD lid, or if they just wear out??? I have had many Dell Laptops where they just needed re-tightened.

I am unaware of a method to tighten these hinges. This is very common for this model.

Bob, I had uploaded Win 10P on a Lat 5414 w a new SATA SSD, (grrr that it seems an NVMe alteration does not look feasible), and all was going well, doing just about the last update. A Dell critical firmware notice popped up and so that was downloaded and the Lat 5414 was left to do its updating thing. I checked a couple of hours later and the Lat 5414 had powered to the power button blinking green on/off stage. The power button was pushed and the green light displayed for about 20 seconds, and then the battery status LED in the handle blinked amber twice followed by green once => Dell manual says a processor problem. The computer does not post anything on the LCD display. The Dell short version Self-Test had passed earlier. The back cover was removed and all looked good. I followed several of Dell's suggested "How to Recover the BIOS" but none worked. I hit the computer case fairly firmly several times and surprisingly the Lat 5414 posted, (the SSD and battery at the time were removed), and the BIOS settings looked okay. So the battery and SSD were installed and ....no post. Removing the battery once again changed nothing; the Lat 5414 would not post. While it seems very coincidental that this Lat 5414 failed to post following a firmware update, after hitting it firmly and having it post for a short time indicates a loose connector. Would your guess be that the problem stems from a faulty CPU connector? How is the best way to check any connectors associated with the CPU that would cause a non-post. Is the CPU a replaceable item in a Lat 5414? Re: Your comment on the loose hinges is spot on for the Dell Lat 5414, 7414, 5590. 7490 and others.

Very interesting problem, my first instinct would be to change out the SSD to a different unit. I am forwarding this to our Tech team to see what suggestions they may have. I encourage you to take a minute and fill out our tech support form: www.bobjohnson.com/tech-support-form/ By filling out the form you start the process of our head tech checking and perhaps he has run into a similar situation while upgrading a Latitude 5414. Have you replaced a wireless cellular modem in one of these 5414 toughbooks? If so, where can I purchase a replacement. Mine seems to not be working correctly. Thanks

We actually have a step-by-step walkthrough the replacement here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5WmgnZ9q9iAmdE We also carry the card for the 5414 here: www.bobjohnson.com/sierra-wireless-airprime-em7355-gobi-5000-4g-mobile-data-card/

Do you by any chance know a solution to the loose hinge problem?
@Bobjohnson3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, honestly, I've looked and looked for an answer to this and there isn't really an official one. One thing you could try is removing the cover just beneath the hinges on the back of the laptop and tightening the internal hinge bolts.

Hi Bob, I enjoy your videos. 👍 I have recentky bought a Dell Rugged 14 model 5404 and I'm very happy with it. However, I just noticed that there seems to be a broken SIM card stuck in the SIM socket. What is the best way to address that issue? I guess I'll have to open up the laptop and get access to the socket itself? If it turns out that the socket has been damaged, is that a replacement part that I can source from Dell?
@Bobjohnson3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much :).Is it a dummy sd card? Most likely you will have to remove the bottom plate and get access to the socket.
@somaday2595 Жыл бұрын
I tried removing the SIM card in a Lat 5414 and the alignment looked off just a tiny bit. Removed the back and the screw securing the SIM card holder was in so tight that I thought I would round it, so I gave up and the SIM card won.

How much ram / memory can you upgrade to ? New to this , getting my first one...I am not computer savvy so please advise in terms that makes sense to a non-computer tech over 65 but 20 at heart. I'm getting 5414 with DVD drive. (1366x768), Intel Core i5-6300U, 128GB SSD, 8GB DDR4, Backlit Keyboard, DVD-RW, Windows 10 Pro .... so you know how to advise me. Any help/advice is appreciated.... Thanks...Mrs.M.
@Bobjohnson11 ай бұрын
So that looks like a pretty good unit based on what is in it, but the hard drive seems a little small, a 128GB SSD wont get you very far nowadays, I would recommend at least a 256GB SSD. The RAM, the 8GB DDR4 is good, depending on what you plan on using it for. And the last thing that I would recommend is trying to find one with Windows 11. Windows 10 is still good, but it's better to have the latest operating system. Hopefully this helps, if you have anymore question feel free to ask!

Hey Bob, thanks for the videos on this machine. I just picked one up a few days ago and was reviewing the service manual. It looks like there is a section about installing a nvidia daughterboard Part # 8H7HP. From my research it looks like this was primarily used on the 7404. Not sure if the heatsinks are swappable as I havent had a chance to open mine up yet, but im sure the GPU would need some kind of cooling contact. Any insight into using that GT 720M on this, or would it just be worth it to slap 32GB of RAM into the PC and let the iGPU do the work? There are a handful of situations I'd need to run this as a 3 monitor machine that Im considering the 720M daughter board.

Would you say $190 for a lightly used model with 8GB Ram w/ 528GB SSD with only mibir scuffs/light scratches, original battery w/ 990 hours on it? I'm curious what you think and if it's a good deal?

Hey, I just bought a 5414 from a "Microsoft authorized refurbisher" so of course the stickers they put on the feet(instead of replacing runner) aren't on square, and other stupid problems. So far my concern is the handle. Seems loose. When I lift the laptop by the handle the rubber flexes. Is that normal? Also, as it flexes, it pulls away a little from the edges of the handle where the rubber meets plastic. Can this be made better, or is it a design fault and I shouldn't worry about the handle coming loose?
@Bobjohnson2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, due to the "rubberized" natured of the handle, this is pretty common. Not really sure why they decided to add this feature, instead of a retractable handle. If you do need help fixing some other issues on your 5414 we're always here to help. We are a Microsoft REGISTERED refurbisher with experienced, certified techs- in the rugged business for over 25 years :) Just fill out our repairs and service form here: www.bobjohnson.com/repairs-service/ and our techs will work with you one-on-one.

I plugged a add on graphics card into mine (5414) and it wasn't the right one, and the screen went black to where I see the dell logo very faintly as if it's a burn in the screen but that it's not... the one I was meant to get was a W8TGN, the one I got was the 027Y72 GeForce GT 720M that I thought would work.. same slot, cards look virtually nearly the same, but apparently their not the same, for each machine is some who different. I can plug it into a TV and use HDMI to see the laptop after booting in, as is how I know the laptop's Mother-Board is working.. any one know how to get the screen back.. I have even done a reinstall of the bios from a file I downloaded to run from the windows OS to install. I can't see the bios, because when I start up the laptop the TV doesn't get a signal until the laptop has booted to the OS, as the HDMI is dependant of windows OS... I'm looking for an answer to this. I am getting another as a 5404, and I hope the bios is the same, I will boot into that and then see if their is any way to reset from the bios on that machine, I will count the steps of what direction in the menu of how many arrows down and enters to hit, to see if I can get to reset the graphics.. of hopefully not having a blown screen.. which I don't think I have if I can still see the dell logo faintly at boot.

Although the CF-19 MK3 was a great unit it does have limitations to max memory and is slow when running Windows 10. If you like the CF-19 model we have newer units that run windows 10 and have better upgrade capabilities: www.bobjohnson.com/toughbook-cf-19/ You might also consider the replacement to the CF-19, the CF-20: www.bobjohnson.com/panasonic-toughbook-cf-20-mk1-intel-core-m5-6y57-1-10ghz/
