These negative comments crack me up. This guy gets up to $100k to train one dog for the military. His dogs have proven themselves in battler and saved many lives. Regardless of whether u agree with the methods or not, it works.

I do not think that sane people would argue with the results he can obtain. What they want to argue about is that someone could obtain results just as good without using e-collars. I am not saying I agree with that statement, I am just saying I think this is what they are arguing about.

An E collar is not a “shock collar” people shock collars from the 70’s and were made to stop unwanted behavior. E collars are way more advanced in technology and are not high voltage shocks they produce a nerve relaxing stim just like what chiropractors use on patients and e collars are not made for correcting behavior it is for reinforcing a behavior they already know really well

First, I would like to point out that I am not against e-collar and I am not pro e-collar either. Now that this is said, I would like to point out that e-collar can also have high voltage when set to a high level. My own e-collar when set to max level develops a voltage of about 420 volts between the contact points. Also, the relaxing stim you are speaking about from TENS unit used by chiro or by physio can also develop high voltage. The technician adjusts the machine accordingly. In both cases, what is felt is the passage of an electric current. So in summary, in the 60s or 70s these devices had only one setting and were delivering an electrical current that was high enough to be qualified as an electric shock every time you pressed the button. Today, they can still deliver an electrical current that is high enough to be qualified as an electric shock depending on the level at which the remote is set. People used them at low level for negative reinforcement and some people still use them at high level for positive punishment. Happy training.

Sorry I was looking for clicker based training. Morally, I can not work with shock collars. I'm glad he at least uses reward training as well. I see people with choke chains and prong collars who don't understand that the dog needs to know what is expected, before applying punishment. They're just stressing the dog and causing more problems. This guy is obviously one of the exceptions.

He ALSO does clicker based training...mostly uses clicker based training, especially to start. I can sympathize with not wanting to use shock collars, and that's totally fine, since it is a specialty tool for certain training situations. That being said, good shock/e-collars are good tools. I think the Dogtra brand promoted something like 127 levels of adjustment, compared to your $5 Walmart/online knock off that maybe has four levels. Top level is going to be equal and fully painful regardless of brand/price, but a good collar with a lot of adjustment can be tuned to a tickle instead of not noticeable, not noticeable, pretty painful, REALLY painful. Something to think about, but I can fully understand not wanting to use them.

I follow his online training course and it's 6 months minimum of foundational work and bonding before the dog receives any kind of correction. I would consider Mike to be 95% plus positive reinforcement and zero positive punishment is given if he isn't absolutely sure that the dog understands what is being asked of it. The prong or e-collar is at the very end of the training process.

I think you would be surprised to know how many trainers using e-collars are similar. The trainers I went to refuse to introduce e-collar until you have completed a total of 3 courses for a total of 18 hours over the course of at least one year. Another great example would be Ivan Balabanov. Happy training.
