PVC does not degrade in the sun, what does degrade are the black straps that after 2-3 months become crystalline and fragile. A cordial greeting.

Too funny all the birds are so interested in the rabbits!! 😄Those are some handsome bunny fellas! I can speak from experience that the PVC will hold up well to the elements, part of my coop frame is pvc as well and it’s been out there 2 years now with no signs of breaking down and we have seen all extremes in temps here since it was built. I think you’re right about needing to replace the zip ties though. Those do get brittle in the elements and in my experience they work themselves loose with movement. Making twisty ties out of wire to hold it will work but since you have more stuff to build, think of investing in a pair of J clip pliers and get a bunch of Jclips. Those can even make the “hinge” for the door if you don’t clamp them too tight on the wire. For the wind I’d either stake the corners of the frame or tie bricks to them so that the wind can’t catch up under the tarp and lift the whole dang thing if it really gets to blowing! Ya don’t need those Kentucky birds ending up in Kansas!! 😄

You crack me up! I sure do not want my supper birds in Kansas! I have a box of those j-clips somewhere. We tried using them with our chicken run at our old house with no luck. But I have seen they work great to make rabbit cages and the such. I may dig those out and see what I can do with this. I thought about using material like what a dog collar is made of to make hinges. I know that won't last long term but it may get us through to mid summer when we process these guys. Thanks for the ideas!

the pvc will degrade in the sun. you can prime and paint it to get many more years out of it. i do love the build and might build one of these myself. thank you

You can always fill the base PVC with water for ground stability!
@twooldcrowshomestead

You are right about that. When it rains, it is heavy to move. But it does add to the stability.

I love it. But my thoughts are the rain getting into the three inch pipe. That will make it so heavy that you won't be able to drag it..

Thanks for stopping by! We have not had that problem yet. We’ve been using this for a couple months now. We have considered that though. If it becomes an issue, we will just drill holes on the bottom the frame to let it drain. However, having a little weight is good to in case a storm whips up to keep it on the ground. It gets windy here sometimes.

You must be city folks lol...didnt think that design through very well...its gonna be sooooooo easy for predators to get into that thing lol....and high winds,are gonna blow it around...also loved how you dripped pvc primer all over the deck lol..I woulda put a drop cloth underneath it first

Thanks for the insight. We actually built this almost 3 years ago and it’s still going strong. We use it 2-3 times a year for grow outs and have only had to replace a few zip ties. No issues with predators either. We had storms come through two days ago that blew trees down but this thing didn’t go anywhere. I’ll remember the tip about the drop cloth though. 😉

How is the tractor holding up 2 years later?
@twooldcrowshomestead

We still use it. I currently have 6 American Bresse chicks in it. The only thing we have to do each year is replace broken zip ties. It is holding up well.

Looks great! The PVC plan has always been my fave & I really like this 1 specifically. Quick question: have yall had any predator issues? All the tractors I've seen have had the drop down sides to prevent predators from digging in. Blessings!

Thanks for stopping by and checking us out. We love this tractor and still use it for our grow outs. It has held up remarkably well. I have had to replace some of the zip ties but that is about it. Our biggest issue is with aerial predators and this tractor takes care of that. I will point out though that we keep this in our fenced in back yard that we spend quite a bit of time in and our dogs frequently run around in. There are other predators such as raccoons, foxes, coyotes, etc. but so far, they do not venture up close to our house. Hope this helps.

@@tonyamcmichael3161 How exciting and good for you! Homesteading is a ton of work, but so very rewarding. We've been able to help our kids and friends fill their freezer this winter with meat and it just makes our hearts full! Being in control of your food will just make you feel better all the way around.

We used wide zip ties that I ordered from Amazon. They are about a half inch wide and about 18 inches long.
