Debbie Reynolds was a very big star.

Wrong. Carrie was big but mostly because of a supporting character in Star Wars. In fact Carrie is not even in her own best movie, Postcards From The Edge. She wrote it and they gave it to Meryl Streep. Meanwhile Debbie played lead in many of her own movies including the one that earned her an Oscar nomination. And obviously Singing In The Rain continues to live on, 80 years later. She also had a daytime TV talkshow. At her peak, Debbie was as big if not bigger than Carrie at hers.
