Ep#5: France Prepares for War: What was France Doing When Germany was Rearming? Maginot Line

France declared war on Germany exactly 2 days after Germany invaded Poland in September 1939. However, France was not prepared for a full scale war of mobilization wherein German panzers and Luftwafffe swept across large enemy territory in a matter of days.
On the political front, France was in turmoil after the first world war. Militarily, France didn't focus on rearmament as strongly as Germany and Italy did after the first world war. In contrast, France sought peace and endorsed Germany's entry in the League of Nations.After the first world war, France had shifted its military mindset to become completely defensive: they could now only fight a defensive war against Germany.
For this, France built a long line of fortifications along its German border - it became known as the Maginot Line. It was a formidable structure for its time, but it didn't prove to be effective to prevent a full scale German invasion of France.

The Maginot Line defense of France theory was trying to solve many political problems within a divided French society that went as far back as their country's surprise defeat in the earlier Franco Prussian War. The line was never properly completed in northern France due to money problems and Belgian govt objections that most of their country would again become the field of battle like WW1 if the French Army did not move in to stop the Germans at their eastern border.

Love the video and explanations. Much better than other "most viewed and liked" WW2 videos. Great work. Answering your question, I feel 2nd option is a better strategy for dealing with neighbours. Passive, but long lasting. Much more like what Indira Gandhi did at Shimla Agreement. She had 93000 PoW after Bangladesh liberation, but did not push for Kashmir settlement as that would lead to Pakistani humiliation and provide traction for a future reaction.

I also heard that Germany and USSR signed another pact and invaded Poland from both fronts. Basically they captured poland with 50/50 share. Warsaw was under Soviet control. But I dont recall whether it was ww1 or ww2? Btw your videos are really great and informative. Keep it up 😀😀👍👍

Warsaw belonged to the Russian Empire before WW1. It was captured by Germany during the war. Before WW2, Warsaw was the capital of Poland, but came under German control after Poland was defeated.

@@user-vo8ep8jz8c Yeah I can understand but there was a time when they both formed a coalition and just captured Poland or you can say divided Poland into 2 halves and kept each half with themselves. And Warsaw was the place where both the German and Soviet army chiefs and their respective soldiers met face to face and declared no more further aggression (armstice signed).

Mujhe lagta hai france ne 2 main galti ki during treaty of Versailles. 1. Unhone socha jo hona hai ho gaya, aage toh kabhi kuch hoga hi nahi, and unhone clearly Germany ko underestimate kiya. Ek basic thumb rule hota hai saanp ko adhmara chodoge toh pakka dasne aayega, ya toh saanp ko maar do, nahi maar sakte toh uske dusre hamle ke liye ussi din taiyaari shuru kar do jis din kuchla tha. 2. Dusra France ko itni heavy punishment ko favour karne se pehle self analysis karna chahiye tha ki unhone kitna nuksaan jhela hai, aur unko wapas khada hone me kitna time lagega.
