It may be sientific, and it's great I guess. The problem with the "soviet school" is the same as with any other soviet educational system -- total optimisation and egalisation. Coaches didn't care about individual traits of the boxers, they just trained boxers who fit they school. The others in the group were considered "budget ballast". One could tell the same about musical education, and education in general in USSR.
