I just watched the entire episode and have to say it was surprisingly good considering I wasn't that familiar with all the acts, they were better then expected. Most of all the chat was funny and energetic, sometimes I'm a little old/stoned/slow and miss some of the comments live, but watching it back y'all were pretty funny tonight. This channel has a great core of people with great hysterical comments, I hope to see everybody keep the vibe alive again next Friday.

I did some digging on Edwin Starr, very interesting; “Over the years, however, Starr said the real meaning of the song had been lost. “The song was never about the Vietnam War,” he told the weekly British newspaper the Voice in 2001. “It was about the neighborhood wars and the racial wars that were going on inside America at the time. Apr 3, 2003”

I'm 63 years old and have followed pop/rock music very closely all of my life but I'm embarrassed to admit that I hadn't heard of Grin until right now. Same goes for Paul Butterfield's Better Days. This is the first time I've ever heard of them.

Grin's front man was Nils Lofgren, who later joined the E Street Band after Steve Van Zandt left.

Check out the first 2 Paul Butterfield Blues Band LP's both 5 star records and listen to Born In Chicago for his best work. At this point he was developing a serious drug problem which would escalate and he was far from his best in this performance unfortunately.

Edward Starr "WAR" Can't Wait to hear how that sounds live. I remember when I bought the 45. At that time a 45 rpm was 15 cents. Vietnam War was in full swing. The song sure fit in place, with the 70s. "War, what is it good for." "Only for the undertaker" A lot of people in my hometown didn't come back. If they did, they weren't the same. Smokey doing a lot of Maricals songs. Can't wait to hear those songs.

re: Smokey's closing comment on the energy crisis, I can't post the link to the graph, but gas prices doubled in late '73 after the Yom Kippur war and ensuing OPEC boycott. In real terms, a gallon of gas cost 0.09 hours of work in early 1973 (the cheapest it ever got, 35c/gallon vs $4/hr of wages) vs 0.12 hours of work in January 1974. Real prices doubled to 0.18 hours of work 2006 - 2014, and are again now sitting at 0.12, halfway been the 1973 low and 2008 spike.

I used to pump cash at a full-service station in Tulsa in 1973, it was 18.9 cents a gallon. Back in 1976 I could put $1 in and make it to and from school. My buddies would leave their pop bottles in the car and we would use those to buy extra gas.

Had no idea as to the origin & wanted to share, anyone else remember the “Hippie Slogan” on vehicle bumper stickers back then? “While R. Crumb didn't make up “keep on truckin'” he certainly popularized it. The line comes from “Truckin' My Blues Away” a song by Blind Boy Fuller from 1936. Crumb is an avid blues fan, so he more than likely heard the phrase in Fuller's song and adapted it to his comic strip.”

The "Keep on Truckin" blacklight poster was on my wall, as well as the Viking with the axe, the haunted ghost ship, the cosmic eye, the Silver Surfer, a haunted house, "Let's Boogie", KISS, a 6ft Spiderman, a marijane leaf, and a unicorn, all walls and ceiling was covered bought my blacklight and a set of JVC Speakers with my first Quik Trip paycheck. I also had a bong that I convinced my mom was a broken lava lamp. Those were the days!! 😎😎😎

LBJ had to send 500,000 troops/yr to Vietnam in the late 60s. Rich people could go to college or get doctor's notes to get a draft deferment, or people with connections could join National Guard units, so the butcher's bill of infantry casualties largely fell to working-class draftees. There were 2 million men turning 18 each year in the 60s so chances were relatively high you were going to Vietnam if you couldn't get a deferment. Maybe 1 in 10. By mid-1969, after ~200,000 casualties, the American people had largely had enough of all that and wanted out; and Nixon obliged by pulling US troops out just about as fast as LBJ had sent them in (the 1970 campus protests about the incursions into Cambodia were prompted by people thinking Nixon was re-escalating the war but this was more a last-gasp operation to provide Saigon a bit more breathing room as the US ceded the remote areas of S Vietnam back to the Communists). Anyhoo, Edwin Starr can be proud that per Wikipedia: "War" was one of 161 songs on the no-play list issued by Clear Channel following the events of September 11, 2001

I jumped directly to Show and Tell when I saw Smokey was performing it... a great singer performing a great song, right? Wow, was I wrong. The arrangement is too fast (which was all too common on The Midnight Special) and the lyrics are really meant for someone with a deep voice.
