Hi everyone, In this episode of Change Catalyst by Attitude Makeover, I am thrilled to be joined by Ashok Krish, an insightful and accomplished author of Masala Lab: The Science Of Indian Cooking, a book that seamlessly blends candid anecdotes with insightful culinary science. Krish also serves as the Global Head of Digital Workspace at Tata Consultancy Services in Chennai.
The episode begins with a captivating journey through Krish's early years, as he maneuvers through his experiences traveling from city to city, immersing himself in the rich tapestry of beliefs and customs that vary across India's diverse regions. Growing up in a family steeped in music and culinary traditions, Krish developed an innate ability to identify and embrace the cultural influences that have shaped generations, shaping his own identity and perspectives. Krish further delves into the process of selecting myths to debunk, shedding light on the chasm between scientific research and public perception.
In India, where the Vedas are revered as religious scriptures and Sanskrit is regarded with unwavering reverence, Krish challenges the notion of animal cruelty embedded within these sacred texts. He meticulously dissects the ancient Hindu scriptures, revealing how they often condone or even encourage the harming of animals.
Navigating the intricate web of Indian culinary traditions, Krish unravels the myths that have long shrouded the practice of food production, even in vegetarian and vegan settings. He unveils the sobering truth that no form of food production is entirely devoid of animal cruelty, a reality often obscured by the comforting veil of religious fundamentalism. He astutely illustrates that Indians possess a remarkable ability to navigate the ethical complexities surrounding their dietary choices, often finding ingenious solutions that align with their religious beliefs and personal comfort zones.
In a thought-provoking conclusion, Krish challenges the conventional wisdom that equates debate with the pinnacle of learning. He asserts that in today's information-saturated world, mere argumentation often fails to foster genuine understanding or shift deeply entrenched beliefs. Instead, he advocates for a more nuanced approach to discourse, one that emphasizes empathy, critical thinking, and a willingness to embrace new perspectives.
As Krish champions the power of self-reflection in guiding informed decision-making, the entire episode emerges as a compelling testament to the transformative power of inclusivity in fostering personal growth and collective understanding.

Good conversation. His views resonate with me so much. More than the dietary rationale, its the indoctrination around food that is held dear by many families, give them meaning, cause friction at all levels. And we just need to say, "relax folks, food aint bite" 😂

@@AttitudeMakeover yes. I have watched a lot of his videos. This video makes him look like he is promoting animal based diets and white bread, which he really is not. Sour dough bread is better than white bread. Plant based diet as much as possible is better. However, he makes a caveat, which is really important, that it’s not possible for everyone to afford either of those. So, it’s okay to have white bread and animal based diet. It’s not bad at all. But if you can afford, which a huge proportion can’t, go for sourdough and plant based as much as possible. This was his message in many places.

You know what just to reply to you am having to watch it again coz I had already forgotten all about the video 😅.. but am wondering are you really waiting for me to reply for you to watch the video?.. what I think though is you have watched it and made up your conclusion.but just for the fun of it..here is where I digress. I lost it when he started talking nonsense about Ramayana but I understand he was trying to put forward his point about importance of story telling is to human evolution but then he could have considered any other example rather than talk shit about something he doesn't believe in.. He talks a lot about myths and beliefs but what research has he done to be so sure that what he says is the truth what he is doing is talking about his own beliefs as if it's truth. Indian culture both culnary or otherwise is ancient and although it may not have follwed the same approch a modern scientist does to find truth it has been optimized with the rights and wrongs and if the guy was actually scientific in thinking the fair approch would be saying "this is what I think from a logical point of view or from my testing etc" but not say everything else is wrong. To me that approch is wrong.. And added to that talking shit about Hindu scriptures just to create controversy for views...
