I feel for your loss. We all know life is precarious. Obviously both were enjoying life. They were lucky to survive great adventure with you. I am sure both had great memories of their time on your boat. You should be proud of that. What happened after is tragic. Fortunately it didn't happen on your watch. I hope nothing similar happens to you or your crew. You just mentioned several close calls. Just make sure the new girls are aware of the risks and are willing to take them, you have. All the best in your current adventure.

Plukky this reminder of the lightning strike makes me have a question. What happens if you get stuck in the aluminum kittie? Is being made of aluminum better for spreading out the power? All metal boat and mast acts as a Faraday cage. Like a car body ...you still have to protect sensitive equipment. Its still best to give it the easiest shortest external route to the water and not let it do what happend here and go through the motors and shafts.

@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 yeah that's what I was wondering about. It seems like a metal boat would spread out the electricity better than a metal mast and fiberglass. I think the surge arced from the mast to the water through the hull which poked the hole. That shouldn't happen with a metal boat, I think and hope.

And DAM right there have better be a death penalty handed down to the 4 animals that did the unthinkable. Boats looking good congrats on getting go Fundme to 70% plus. Yes these two Crew members you're putting through the recruitment process won't really know what it's like on the boat until they've actually done it. I'm still a S into F fanboy. Just for kicks though I'd like to point out that it would be nice if for this fossil free challenge we could get aluminum smelted with energy from solar power, from ore mined with equipment that was solar powered, and finally welded with energy from solar too. Just saying. That is to say fossil fuel free is impossible just but the goal is just to minimize it I suppose.

Iceland has, essentially, infinite free hydrothermal energy, (fossil fuel free), and they do a LOT of aluminum... ...supposedly, they are going to try and take over the aluminum world, but not holding my breath... ...True that; Aluminum smelting is massively energy intensive... For the longest time Lake Baikal, in Russia, was the hydroelectric source for the majority of aluminum smelting, and that is fossil fuel free, but they sure messed up that watershed for it... but that's Russia for ya'.... and now the weir coming out of Baikal has dropped significantly!
