Thank you for showing us your Hinterlands. Time for me to order some linen.😊 If the poppers give you grief and make some damage you could hide it with some embroidery or top the placket with some grosgrain ribbon. Good luck!

that's a good idea! he managed to remove the sticky out side, i am going to do a sample new sticky out side on some scrap fabric and see if it clicks into the flat side on the dress - if it does i will finish it off. if not i will task him with removing the flat side too. so far its ok hole wise.....

Thank you, I found this really interesting. I'm definitely going to have to make one for myself so it was great seeing all the different adaptations. I was thinking with your bleach spillage you could always embroider or patch over it. Some of those lovely linen stamped patches you make would look great.

I'm doing the Hinterland course. I have modified my own patterns so it isn't able confidence in my part. I'm enjoying putting into practice some of what i have learnt into other sewing projects.

Thank you for sharing your hinterlands, this was so interesting,I’m now thinking of buying the pattern. I love the look of merchant and mills fabric but it’s sooo expensive that I don’t think I can bring myself to try it.

Ah fab! I have never regretted buying linen from m and m, if it's something you will wear for years and a pattern you've made and know you wear, I would save up for it. I am currently saving up for some check linen for a jumpsuit. That brown gingham dress i still love however many years later and it feels so soft. I prob wouldn't indulge on a whim project now though.

Lovely Hinterlands! I particularly love the checked one (being a check obsessive..). I feel you on the love for M&M fabrics and the surprise/shock of seeing the price increase to £32/m. The Hinterland is actually a pattern I've never made, but after seeing your versions I might have to give it a go :)

A great video. I'm considering making this pattern for myself, so found it interesting to see all your Hinterland versions. With the bleach strain, have you considered doing a visible mend on the mark. You could embroider or applique a flower or something else that appeals to you..... male it a design feature rather than a mend. I couldn't see where the mark was, but you could also make s little coin pocket depending on where it is on the garment. There are some great people on KZbin and Instagram that I've found doing amazing mending. A very interesting one I found was a Japanese way of doing an invisible mend on woven fabrics. I think it's called kaketsugi and you use a patch of the same fabric and use very small stitches that pick up the warp and weft of the fabric. If I can find the video i watched I'll come back and edit this comment and let you know. Happy making. I'm looking forward to seeing any baby makes that you complete ❤ The video I first watched wad called The Art of Invisible Mending on the channel NHK World-Japan. There are others as well.

Lovely to see you looking so well! I don't know how you manage the time to keep filming the podcast, but grateful that you do. I began with sewing too - designing and making Sindy clothes as a young girl. I find knitting has helped my sewing (and vice versa) when it comes to understanding how garments are constructed. I used to be very pernickety when sewing, but in recent years have become much more 'casual' in my approach. One tip for people beginning is to buy cheap fabric to make a first version - you can then check the fit and the style, also have a bit of a practice, before cutting into the £32/m (!!!!) stuff. I have bought perfectly acceptable linen and linen/viscose for about £5/m from pound fabrics in the UK. Completely agree about the value of good quality linen though, pity about the Atelier Brunette.

thanks :) yes i think i started by making clothes for my japanese barbies haha (they were less curvy and more about the big eyes!) - but i did not understand the need for seam allowance! ha. I am sure at some point i will have to pause recording for a bit- want to keep going as long as i can though!!

Oh really nice to find you- suggested by Its a Sarah podcast- because of the Hinterland Dress. I have been afraid to make it. I spent $$ and scared to cut the fabric... Thank you. Love this! You look great in the Hinterland dress and I love your colours. I've made 4 (so far) and my main hack is patch pockets... i can never find the inseam. My question is about your fabric. How does the Blackbird linen compare to M&M? I think the washed linen from Blackbird is pretty good. It's hard to find M&M here (Toronto). The few shops that carry it are sold out immediately. Also, btw, one version i made with a denim (hemp/cotton) from BB that is pretty lightweight and drapey. It was wide enough that i made the skirt all in one rectangle with button placket up the front and patch pockets. Wishing you the best and easy days ahead🍀

thanks! I haven't worn by BB linen dress much because it was on the small side by the time i finished it :( whereas some of my M and M dresses I have been wearing for a few years and are incredibly soft now. My gut feeling is that M&M is probably better but maybe not worth the price difference unless you can really afford it?

So nice to see all your versions! I've made 7 of them now. For the last one I moved the bust darts a bit down and outwards. To be honest, it doesn't change that much to the fit imo. I got some inspiration with your hack for the neckline, I'm gonna try a version of that too, I am thinking that would be nice with a small floral print perhaps! Good luck with the daily chaos!

That’s a very good point about bias binding… a lot of wastage. I love sewing with viscose challis and I hate making my own bias binding from it, I think I will start buying some premade binding for my stash instead.

Thank you - loved this as a knitter looking to expand into sewing garments. For some reason I seem to have a real fear of diving into sewing garments - watching you explaining your journey and the iterations you've made is making me feel more confident at getting stuck in. As such I would love further videos on your sewing journey and patterns you have used. I also was grateful for your sew liberated shout out - I am thinking maybe a course by them maybe worth the investment. As a Shropshire midwife who loves your channel, I am thrilled that I was correct in my guess that you are pregnant ;-) - I'm pleased to hear you are feeling much better than you were earlier in the pregnancy. BTW it wasn't me who made a comment you needed to delete 😳

yeah I can understand the fear, as you can unpick knitting but you can't always unpick and fix sewing. but i think it is better to dive in and just try and kinda accept it will look a bit wonky for a while until you get the practice in. i would have thought the sew liberated course would be good- but maybe worth googling some reviews??? and ha! i am still genuinely shocked how much worse the first bit is- i just assumed it would start easy and progressively get harder, not be absoultely horrendus then fine for a while! ha

I recently purchased a sew liberated sewing course, and I don’t regret anything, everyone on that platform is amazingly helpful and very knowledgeable

Guthrie and Ghani also sell a video with hints and tips for making the Hinterland. I found it really useful as a newbie garment sewer. It's much cheaper too at about £6. 🙂

Wowee you shave done a marvelous job showcasing so many completely different versions of the dress without making it seem like the same dress different fabric. So inspiring! I hv the pattern…. At the end of your view you mentioned your favorite linen, but I was not able to decipher what it is. I would love it if you wd share the linen and supplier with me? I just purchased the hinterland and the Estuary skirt from them, I can’t wait to dive into sewing! It’s such a useful skill to have, also how did you make your pretty fabric labels for your dresses?

ah brilliant! it is a stamp i had custom made which i stamped onto wide calico tape with wash safe ink. :)

OMG I hadn't realised that Merchant & Mills had increased their prices (sob!). I was hoping to one day purchase enough of one of their linens to make a dress with (about 3 metres) but that dreams gone out of the window lol! I know you love their linen but have you ever bought any linen elsewhere that comes close to their quality? I do want to build up (hand sew) my linen wardrobe but the fabric is really quite expensive. Also have you ever tried and have thoughts on any of their sewing patterns? Some of them look like very nice basics and I'm thinking of purchasing the Ellis and Hattie Dress.

I know its sad :( I havent actually sewn any of their patterns but know people who have that have enjoyed them- I think most of them don't have adjustable waists (which the sew liberated patterns do) which I really like in a pattern even when not pregnant! tho that wouldnt be a problem for an a line dress??? I am going to try the linen from ray stitch next.... sadly i havent found anything i love as much as M and M yet :(

You don't have to make bias binding from a long diagonal strip. You can easily make a continuous strip of bias binding from a 10" or 12" square of fabric. Look it up on KZbin. There are several tutorials for it and it is quite easy.

I'm not sure about the kind where you cut it into strips and sew it together, but this is done differently.

yes! this is what I was trying to artciulate at one point but obvs didnt do a good enough job haha. thats what i did on my first hinterland when i was making larger amounts of bias for a few things :)

Loved this video. I finished my first Hinterland dress yesterday. I made it from a hand dyed batik cotton in teals, forest green and purples. Do you think the pattern would work for a jersey fabric?

thanks! no idea tbh. its not very fitted so might look a bit baggy???? depends how much time/spare fabric you have.... could give it a go? (i don't really sew with jersey so not an expert on this!)

yes but i dont always use it- prefer a french or flat felled seam as its one less bit of kit to fuss with. I am lazy and don't change the colour thread on the overlocker and so its always black which is a bit ugly....
