Being young and not aware of the first two FOGHAT albums at this moment in time, seeing them on this episode changed my life from a music standpoint. I thought that "Home In My Hand" was incredible. Just as others have done in their early years, I went to my local record store and found the album it was on (Energized) and purchased it the week after this aired. It is still my favorite FOGHAT album (and they have many great albums). I've been a fan for 50 years and counting...I am 66 years old now (2024) and will always be a FOGHAT fan because of this introduction to their music. Wonderful memories. RIP Lonesome Dave and Rod.

Same here. But it was that beautiful white SG with the gold hardware and then Price's solo on Honey Hush that did it for me. Huge fan of Rod Price's slide playing. Talk about truly underrated. That would be Price.

Yep, I am also 66. I had an older friend when I was 15 who made some mixed tapes for me, since I was just getting familiar with good Rock bands. One of those names was Foghat, and soon after that they had Slow Ride on the radio. Their live album is still my go to album for a sunny summer day 🔥❤️

The actual name of the "mystery" group billed here as "Uncle Crusty" was the Venice Canaligators. We had been at the previous taping of the show hosted by Dr. Hook when the audience had to be evacuated due to what I recall was a bomb threat, though here it's referred to as a "power failure". The Canaligators were a street band at that time, so the guys fetched their guitars from the van and entertained the crowd as they waited outside the studio. As a result, we were invited to appear on the show, I believe the only unsigned band to ever do so. The players on this were Hook "Uncle Crusty" McGuire (harp), Bob Liepman (mandocello), Butch Mudbone (guitar) and John O'Leary (piano), all now deceased except Bob. I was to take John's place, who had been out-of-town, but he returned to do it.

Wow, another great trip in the Way Back Machine, the live chat was 🔥🔥. This was a fun episode, Dr Hook the Clown Princes of Rock and Roll! Foghat burned the place down, Lonesome Dave was teaching all us how to make a Gibson scream! Al Wilson was as smooth as 30 years old scotch. Peter Yarrow established in my mind his chops as a solo artist. Melissa Manchester, so good, so HOT! Uncle Crusty singing my Saturday afternoon song, except he left out the verse where he asked the jailor which drunk tank he was in (Or was that only me?) The Stylistics one of my all-time favorites, blubbered like a baby during, "You Make Me Feel Brand New", the perfect song for the end of the 9th grade prom, of to high school next year, and so long to my dance partner, the memories are why I return every week! Thank You Burt for this show!

@@Royale_with_Cheeze I *could* say that I made the 1st part of my comment erroneous *on purpose* just to see how many people (if any) would be able to correct it! 😆😆 Regardless, the far more important part of my comment was the second statement, to which I notice you didn't reply to, leading me logically to believe that we are therefore in agreement on it.
@Royale_with_Cheeze
@Royale_with_Cheeze 28 күн бұрын
@@anthonykimball7463 Of course, Anthony. She was as beautiful as her voice. I didn't know all about her 8 appearances from memory. There's a website that shows every episode and airdates. I did know that I saw her on MS at least once before. Such a great show. I was 13 when it first aired in Feb. '73 (after the pilot episode in Aug. '72), and never would be allowed to stay up until 2: 30 in the morning to watch it, so these are all new to me in my grey-haired seniority 😊. Now it's on at a very respectable 8 until just after 9. Look up the words Midnight Special Episode Guide to find the source I use.
@anthonykimball7463
@anthonykimball7463 28 күн бұрын
@@Royale_with_Cheeze I'm actually aware of that episode guide you reference, and I (obviously) *should have* double-checked it to make sure I was making a correct statement. I decided instead to rely on my memory....OOPS! 😆 Unfortunately, I was, unlike yourself, a little too young to be able to access MS when it originally aired (not to mention, too young to even really appreciate good music and develop my own personal musical tastes). It is a very cool thing to be able, thanks to the apparent partnership between whatever corporate entity holds the rights to the show and YT, to go through each of these complete episodes and select out the best parts. From going through that aforementioned episode guide, reading who appeared over the course of its eight-year run on NBC, I've concluded that the series' best years (your mileage may vary, as they say) were its' first two...the post-74 period certainly contained a few highlights, but there was an unfortunate overabundance of MOR "yacht rock" and disco.
@Royale_with_Cheeze
@Royale_with_Cheeze 28 күн бұрын
@@anthonykimball7463 One more slight correction: These episodes are presented here on YT in their entirety, reduced from 90 minutes to 1 hour 8 minutes because the commercials aren't there. These episodes aren't edited to give us the best parts. I completely agree that post-'74 there's waaaay too much disco. I bought the 10 DVD set Soul of The Midnight Special and am aghast at how many R&B/Soul performances aren't in it and how disco-laden it becomes. Philly Soul is a forerunner to disco, but not the same. Straight-up disco isn't musically as interesting to me. It served a purpose to get people to buy all kinds of stuff to go along with the lifestyle but as "music", much like Euro House music of today, it functions well in clubs but not in my ears.

1:07 - What's this Dr. Hook song called? I see on the timeline it says Ever Come, but I'm not familiar with that title. Does it have a different title or this just not on their Spotify XD

My grandma & aunt/uncle in Wyoming would grow rhubarb - we kids & cousins would pull it out & eat raw haha! My great aunt made the best 🍓 rhubarb jam I’m craving it now, thanks for the memories ☺️

Peter Yarrow is a great musician, but ever since I found out about what he did (see link below), I can't look at him the same way anymore. Maybe he did what a lot of other famous musicians did too but he got busted for it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Yarrow#Criminal_conviction_and_pardon

Yeah. Hard to look at Bill Cosby and realize that he was a "clean" comic, America's dad as Cliff Huxtable and the convicted rapist that he was. Looking back at his hosting here on MS back in 1973, the all-girl band Fanny was on and he introduced them as "Four Fannies." The signs were there, even back then.
