The “Father of Ukrainian Music" Mykola Lysenko (1842-1912) cultivated Ukrainian folklore into an art form. Since childhood, Lysenko was drawn to Ukrainian folk music, which led him to arrange over five hundred songs during his lifetime. Through his work as musical ethnographer, he acquired deep understanding of Ukrainian folklore, which became the foundation for his musical language.
After receiving a degree in biology, he went to Leipzig to study composition with Carl Reinecke (whose other famous students include Grieg, Busoni, Bruch, Albéniz and Janacek.)
In the Ukrainian Suite Op. 2, Lysenko utilizes his skills as a composer, ethnographer, and
pianist. Modeled after the Bach Suites, it has a distinct national spirit. At the same time, Lysenko showcases the modern piano's capabilities with brilliant passages, wide range of colors, and intricate counterpoint.

Love it! Such a beautiful (if sad) melody. This is a lot faster than the recording on your Ukrainian Rhapsody album, but I think it works well at both tempos. I also liked the additional low octave near the end (on the Eb minor arpeggio) which wasn't on my score, but helps give that line extra power. I just posted my own KZbin video of this Prelude, and the Toccata, yesterday. It was your Ukrainian Rhapsody album that inspired me to learn those pieces. I'm learning the Couranta and Sarabanda next.

thank you so very much and especially for playing Ukrainian music yourself and doing such a beautiful job with it! I think the whole Suite is absolutely marvelous, it was fun to come back to it after a few years and try something different with the tempo/phrasing. Yes, that octave at the end kind of made its way into my fingers and I thought it worked with this version.
