The “Father of Ukrainian Music" Mykola Lysenko (1842-1912) cultivated Ukrainian folklore into an art form. Since childhood, Lysenko was drawn to Ukrainian folk music, which led him to arrange over five hundred songs during his lifetime. Through his work as musical ethnographer, he acquired deep understanding of Ukrainian folklore, which became the foundation for his musical language.
After receiving a degree in biology, he went to Leipzig to study composition with Carl Reinecke (whose other famous students include Grieg, Busoni, Bruch, Albéniz and Janacek.)
In the Ukrainian Suite Op. 2, Lysenko utilizes his skills as a composer, ethnographer, and
pianist. Modeled after the Bach Suites, it has a distinct national spirit. At the same time, Lysenko showcases the modern piano's capabilities with brilliant passages, wide range of colors, and intricate counterpoint.
