กุสินารา หรือกุสินาการ์ เป็น ๑ ใน ๔ สังเวชนียสถานที่พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าได้ประกาศไว้ว่า ถ้าระลึกถึงพระองค์ท่าน ให้มากราบสังเวชนียสถาน ๔ แห่งเหล่านี้ ตั้งอยู่หมู่บ้านกุสินาการ์ อ.กุศินาการ์ รัฐอุตตรประเทศ อินเดีย ห่างจากโครักขปูร์ ๕๐ กิโลเมตร และห่างจากนิวเดลลี เมืองหลวง ๘๕๔ กิโลเมตร
เมื่อพระพุทธองค์ปรินพพานแล้ว คณะสงฆ์ได้มาจำพรรษาจนกลายเป็นสังฆารามขนาดใหญ่ ถึงสมัยพระเจ้าอโศก ได้มาสร้างสถูปประดิษฐานพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ และปักเสาหิน กุสินารารุ่งเรืองต่อเนื่องมาทั้งในสมัยกุษาณะ คุปตะ ปาละ จนพุทธศาสนาสูญสลายจากอินเดียในปีพ.ศ.๑๗๐๐ เศษ ถูกทิ้งร้่างเกือบ ๗๐๐ ปี จนมีการฟื้นฟู ขุดค้นในสมัยพ.ศ.๒๔๐๔ เป็นต้นมา โดยเซอร์อเล็กซานเดอร์ คันนิ่งแฮม จากนั้นเป็นนายคาร์ลไลล์ นายโวเกล นายปัณฑิต หิรานันทะ ศาสตรี และทยาราม ศาหนี จนถึงพ.ศ.๒๕๐๐ อินเดียฉลอง ๒๕ พุทธศตวรรษ กุสินาราจึงได้รับการบูรณะจนสมบูรณ์ในปัจจุบัน
There are four major places were announced by the Buddha himself as follows: Lumbini, where prince Siddhattha was born, Buddhagaya, where he got enlightenment, Sarnath, where the Buddha taught the first sermon and Kushinara, where the Buddha attained Nibbana or Nirvana (passed away).
Today Kusinara (Kushinagar in Sanskrit) is a small town near Kasia in Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It si about 50 km. from Gorakhpur and 854 km. from New Delhi by road. It is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhist around the world , here Buddhists believe Shakyamuni Buddha attained Parinirvana after his death at the age of 80. His relic was distributed in many places. According to Mahasudassanasutta, Kusinara was Kusavati and ruled by king Mahasudassana who had conquered all the adjoining areas, the Buddha himself proclaimed as that king. While according to Buddhist tradition Kushavati was named prior to the king Kusha. The naming of Kushwati is believed to be due to abundance of Kusha grass found in this region.
