Gratitude! This was a great conversation. I think what was missing, although Charles attempted to do this, was a sense of gratitude and love for our significant others for supporting our passion that became our profession. We have our ups and downs and personally, I must thank my wife Alice and express my gratitude for giving me emotional support. I want to thank her also for helping the business by for example proofreading letters, proposals, ads, accompanying me at shows, nut mainly by making important decisions! I am very fortunate and so are many other stamp dealers. What was not mentioned in the discussion was that often significant others do make friends with other spouses' dealers or even customers. In fact, Alice speaks more often on the phone to the wife of my best friend in the business than I do with him! Real friendships can develop. Also, philately has given us the opportunity to travel together around the world, we took vacations in France, Switzerland, Japan after having attended international shows. Finally, but Charles and Michael are not at this point yet, but it is true for most professions, let's be grateful to our wives for staying home with the kids while we are away at stamp shows, on buying trips, or simply working late in the office. 😊

Great episode fellas. It was so nice to meet the better halves in your lives and how Philately’s become and or more fully immersed into the collective (no pun intended) just out of what you both love and do for a living. Another interesting episode. I like Olivia’s suggestions for show locations. I had a chance to visit Belfast about 5 years ago with my family and we had a great time. I also was fortunate to have visited Budapest in the mid 1999’s and they have a philatelic museum that is one of the hidden jewels of philately - well worth the visit. Final thought, Olivia mentioned her friend’s dad who won an award for his exhibit at a show in Buffalo. That’s where I grew up. Go Bills! Go Sabres!

The key is about telling stories. As much as it's fascinating to deep dive on some technical thing that we love, the way to engage others is by building the story around it. For shows, the inclusivity requires a shift of focus. I think the recent Stampex as a really positive effort in that direction, with space given over to the social and community side of things. I suspect the hard part of that would be an increase in costs to those with booths/tables as the venue costs would be the same but with fewer dealers paying to fund it.

This was a great conversation. After your Lego episode, I talked with a comic book friend about the differences and similarities among shows for different collectibles. It seems unrealistic for every show to be a Monaco or a 24-hour 3-day DragonCon. But I agree that it would be more fun for everyone in the audience if there were more tangential or hands-on experiences available.

another great episode. Charles congratulations on a nice girl. On a different note, How many philatelists started on philately, from another hobby due to getting packages of vinyl or the like. For eg My first hobby was collecting Connie Francis [50 years now-1971], and through the overseas mail which i got i saw many stamps of different countries that i got mail from[before internet-1970's-1980's]. I'm wondering how many like me are there?

I really enjoy the diversity of your interviews. Just a note: the ship Vasa was hardly a Viking ship! It was a 17th century Swedish warship!
