In today's video we have a medium size snow globe with a snowman standing in the woods. The water is turning brown so we are going to disassemble the globe, clean it, and give it some fresh water.

Hi. We have a one gallon jug of water for the snow globes that we add alcohol to. It inhibits algae and bacteria growth and that should also keep the water clear longer. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks so much for your videos. I collected music boxes/ snow globes as a kid and now I’m buying them for my nieces. I have a few that were busted over the years and now I feel confident I can fix them myself. One has a broken globe and one, I think, got too cold and the stopper popped out and drained all over the music mechanism. It’s completely rusted, so I’m currently waiting on the new mechanism and a new globe so I can hopefully fix them this weekend. Will you please direct me to one of your videos that explains how to properly measure the diameter so I buy the right size? (I actually ordered blind and 🤞🏻it fits. 🤣) Thanks so much! Again, I love your videos! Sending much love from Wisconsin. ❤️

Hi. We are happy that you like the videos. That is great that you are going to repair your snow globes. Below is some information on determining the correct size replacement globe: This information comes from: snowglobecentral.com/pages/repair On the base of your broken or cracked snow globe, measure the diameter of the circular opening where the snow globe fits into the base. The diameter is the largest line straight across from point a to point b. Glass replacement globes for snow globes and water balls are most commonly available with diameters of: • 1 1/8 inch diameter base opening = 1 3/4" diameter glass globe • 1 3/4 inch diameter base opening = 2 1/2" diameter glass globe • 2 1/4 inch diameter base opening = 3 1/4" diameter glass globe • 2 3/4 inch diameter base opening = 4" diameter glass globe • 3 inch diameter base opening = 5" diameter glass globe • 4 inch diameter base opening = 6" diameter glass globe

Hi Tony! Hi Ally! I have been enjoying your videos while I get pumped up to fix two snow globes and a "water puzzle", which is a similar idea. My question concerns snow: My globes contain snow that is like big chunks of salt. Not flakes or glitter. I looked at the link to the National Artcraft Co. and they list this: "Stock Number: 157-110-09 A) White Snowflakes for Water Globes. These 3-dimensional white bits are like the "snow" found in traditional Snow Globes. This 3/4 tsp. packet is enough for a 4-6" water globe. " I did not find anything like this in my local Joann or Walmart, but haven't checked Michael's yet. Is this most likely what is in my stock globes?

Hi. You may be interested in watching Episode 19 where we review the snow that we got from National ArtCraft. This is the only time we have purchased snow globe snow. We get all of our replacement snow by disassembling other old snow globes for parts. The snow we got from National Artcraft is in our opinion is medium size snow. We have some globes with fine snow, and some with large chunky snow. This is in between. We don't like the fine snow in most cases. Sometimes the chunky snow is too big. This stuff from National Artcraft is a good size for us.

We read that modern snow globe snow is made of plastic but we did not find what type of plastic. There are three links in the description to companies that sell snow globe parts and accessories. We normally get our snow by recycling other old snow globes. We did buy some new snow globe snow from National Artcraft, listed in description, and it worked out well. We review the snow in Episode 19.

We are happy that you like the video. There are three links to snow globe supply companies in the video description. You can buy snow from them. We used National Artcraft. We have no experience with the other two. You can check out Episode 19 for a review of the snow that we bought and compared it to some snow that we bought on Amazon that did not work. Also, the snow may just need to be rinsed and cleaned. Check out Episode 151, at around the 3:30 point we show how we clean and recover snow. Once you rinse out your snow you may not need to buy new snow. Also, you can do what we do and get replacement snow from other old used snow globes that we find in the thrift store. It may save you some money. We use the Gorilla Hot Glue, but we have used a couple other that also worked. I think Elmer's Hot Glue sticks was another one that we used at one point.

Hi. We've actually gone further that that since this time. We have the water, alcohol, and glue pre-mixed in a container ready to just pour in. We are currently using 65% water, 5% alcohol, and 30% glue. This ratio has been working out for us so far. You can see us use this mix in most of our most recent videos.

It sounds like you are talking about a solid base snow globe that has no opening at the bottom of the base. We have many examples on the channel. You can do a search on "Solid base" and find a bunch. You can use a hair dryer to heat the base and melt the glue but our preferred method is boiling water. Place the globe in a plastic bag to protect the base then put it in a bowl and pour boiling water up to where the base and globe meet. Let it sit for about 10 minutes and then check if it is loose, if not, boil more water and give it another 10 minutes. It normally takes 10 to 30 minutes but if it was assembled with hot glue it will eventually come loose. Check out Episodes 201 or Episode 195 for some recent examples.

Help me understand the reasoning for clear Elmer's glue, please? (I have 52 waterglobes)
@snowgloberescue8887
@snowgloberescue8887 Жыл бұрын
Our research uncovered four options for the globe liquid; plain water, water mixed with either clear Elmer's glue or glycerine, and baby oil. We have a video where we compare all four options. We repaired a globe with each option to use in the comparison video. The video is Episode 32. The clear glue dissolves and dilutes clear and it thickens the water so that the snow or glitter fall slower. Of the four options the clear glue works best for us for several reasons that we explain in the video. Hope that helps.

A couple of things that may help; try a very thin coat of mineral oil or baby oil around the stopper. It may help get the stopper to slide into the globe easier but don't use any more than necessary so you don't get drops of oil floating in your globe. Another possibility could be to take a thin screwdriver like the one we use to get the air bubble out when under water and work it around the stopper as you work the stopper into the globe.

how did you save the snow?
@snowgloberescue8887
@snowgloberescue8887 2 жыл бұрын
We pour the snow globe out into a large container. We use a large measuring cup. Then we fill it with clean water. Wait until all of the snow falls to the bottom then pour the water out. You do that a couple of times and you end up with clean snow. We show the process in all of our later videos where we save the snow.

Nice, thanks for sharing your craft! Question, how many years does the water stay clear?
@snowgloberescue8887
@snowgloberescue8887 2 жыл бұрын
That is a good question. It all depends on what is in the water, the figurine and how it is stored. We have globes that are almost 30 years old where the water looks fine and then we have seen globes that are only a few years old and have issues. We have globes that we repaired two year ago that still look fine. The main things to remember are keep the globe out of direct sunlight. Don't store snow globes in a place where they will be subjected to high heat, like an attic or outdoor storage shed or garage. Also don't let them freeze if you live in a place that gets that cold. Sometimes there is metal in the globe such as with an impeller that circulates the snow which rusts over time and turns the water brown. We have seen many of those. There are many factors but theoretically, if it is made correctly and stored properly it should last years.

How do you capture and clean the snow?
@snowgloberescue8887
@snowgloberescue8887 Жыл бұрын
If you have a strainer with a very fine mesh you can pour the globe water in there and rinse it, however, our strainers are not fine enough to hold glitter and fine snow but it does work for larger chunky snow. The method that we use it the dilution method. We pour the globe water into a large container, we use a 4 cup measuring cup, fill with water, as the glitter/snow just settles down, slowly pour the water out stopping before you lose any glitter/snow. Fill again with clean water and repeat until glitter/snow and water are clean. You can see an example in Episode 151.

this is so funny you having to pretend you like the brown glitter. "yeah dear, looks great." "you think so?" "yeah I totally think so." "should we add more?" "no that already looks so amazing and perfect already". "do you think we should add more", "no my darling I think you already added the perfect amount of brown glitter". "wow do you think the brown glitter looks good?" "yeah the brown glitter looks so great, it definitely did not ruin this snowglobe", "do you like how the brown glitter is stuck all over the face and makes it look even dirtier and out of place than before?" "yes I love that darling you are so clever for coming up with this"

We have never used a heat gun but we have been told it may be too hot. However, if that is all you have it would probably work as long as you don't hold it too close.

How would you go about fixing a pedestal snow globe?
@snowgloberescue8887
@snowgloberescue8887 2 жыл бұрын
We have never repaired a pedestal snow globe but we have a couple that we have not gotten around to yet. Hopefully they are assembled with hot glue. What we plan to do is use a hair dryer to heat up the pedestal around the part where the globe meets the pedestal. If that doesn't work we will put the whole thing in a plastic bag then into a tall pot and pour boiling water in until it reaches the top of the pedestal, keeping the glass globe out of the water. If it is assembled with hot glue it should come loose within 10 minutes or so. If you are not familiar with the technique, it is what we what we have been using for all of our solid base snow globes. We have lots of examples on the channel if you want to see it. Check out Episode 128 for a large snow globe and Episode 129 for a small globe. If it is not assembled with hot glue then you can try applying heat for a longer period of time. We have had globes assembled with super glue or epoxy come apart with enough heat. Sometimes they do not. You can also try acetone around the area where the globe meets the base. Sometimes that helps dissolve the glue. Make sure the base will not be harmed by the acetone. As a last resort, and this has happened to us a couple of times, if it is a globe that you really want to fix and you cant get the globe off. Find a cheap used snow globe at the thrift store that has the same size glass globe. Wrap yours in a towel and then break the globe with a hammer or other tool. Use a screwdriver to pry the pieces of glass out of the base then disassemble the globe from the thrift store and use the glass from it to repair yours. Hope that helps.

It is personal preference. We like to see the globes with no air in them at all. A small bubble is common. We see brand new globes all the time with air bubbles.

Where did you all find the Syringe?
@snowgloberescue8887
@snowgloberescue8887 2 жыл бұрын
We found the syringe at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. In Episode 3 - The Snow Globe Repair Tool Kit we explain all of the tools and materials that we use. However, since the time we made that video we don't use the syringe often. In most of our videos from the past six to nine months we have been using the water submersion method where you put the globe upside down in a pot of water then open the stopper slightly to let the air bubble out. It's much easier and works better. We do use the syringe occasionally if there is something about the base that we think will be damaged if the entire globe is place under water, such as a wooden base or a base with electronics or lights. Check out some of our more recent videos to see how it is done. A recent example is Episode 166 where we submerge an Easter globe to remove the air bubble.

But the bubbles though... And it's not fully filled. Should redo so we can all do it right or maybe use a few drops of glycerin and the glue so it bubbles less?

Hi. We'll have to watch the video again to see what you are referring to. However, that video was posted on December 30, 2020, over a year and a half ago. We just took a look at that snow globe sitting on the shelf and it still looks perfect. No air bubble at all. A year and a half later it still looks good. This video was created in the very early days of the channel. We have learned a lot in that time and things have changed. Check out some of our more recent videos and let us know what you think.

Hi, I live in Quebec, Canada. Do you know where I can find a replacement rubber plug? Mine dried up and craques 😢
@snowgloberescue8887
@snowgloberescue8887 10 ай бұрын
Hi. we get all of our replacement plugs by disassembling other old used snow globes. We have not been able to find a company that sells just the rubber plugs. There are links in the video description to three companies that sell snow globe parts. They sell replacement globes that come with as new stopper. So if you want a new stopper from one of these companies you have to buy a replacement globe. I hope that helps.

Do you seal it with hot glue?
@snowgloberescue8887

Yes. We use hot glue around the stopper, overlapping the glue over the stopper and the globe to seal it. Most of our repair videos show that process, especially the more recent ones.

I don’t understand, how come the water turned yellow?
@snowgloberescue8887
@snowgloberescue8887 2 жыл бұрын
There are several possibilities. If you do not add alcohol to the water it could develop algae or bacteria. The water or something in it may have reacted with the figurine or the paint on the figurine. Sometimes there is metal in there such as a snow circulation impeller and the water causes it to oxidized and taint the water. Also, leaving the globe in direct sunlight can case the water to turn.
