Lava Campground , Idaho looks very beautiful with one serious caveat to me at least. It's about 100 yards from hwy 30 so if you're looking for a peaceful quiet place to camp I can't imagine this would be for you. Trucks flying by 24 hours a day some of the drivers running their jake brakes for no reason other than to piss of people around them. "Wyoming is a long state to cross...." 360 miles from west to east, 280 from south to north. It's about a average west of the Mississippi River. Longest state from east to west, (not counting Alaska) is Texas at 760 miles. BTW it's also 660 miles south to north. California is the longest state from south to north at 800 miles. Montana is 559 miles east to west. The thing about Wyoming that makes it seem so long is the headwinds that invariably run from the west to the east, and the rolling hills that slow you down if you are traveling west and 35 mph seems to be pretty average for wind speed there and in large semi truck with very little power it was maddening trying to get through that state so I could make it home. I have to give credit where it's due: This video was extremely well done and I enjoyed every minute of it. Even took notes and saved it for future viewing. The music did get a bit tedious however.
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, John! Fun facts about Western States you've provided. What also makes Wyoming feel so long is that there's just so much "nothing." What you say about Lava Campground is true. Unfortunately it's also true about every campground in Lava Hot Springs, and more so. What helps Lava Campground is that it's a) further back than other campgrounds from the railroad tracks that also pass through town, and also b) that as it passes by the campground, US-30 is actually elevated on a berm, such that much of the sound passes above the campground. We're true peace-and-quiet types of folks, but we didn't find the highway noise to be bothersome.

@campingalan
@campingalan 4 жыл бұрын
@@GrandAdventure Thank you, Marc!! We had a super time! I need to confirm, as I dont know for sure. But, I think the aspen patch on Kebler Pass is one of the largest in the state. The colors from the western start of the Kebler Pass road, by Paonia State Park, up to the turn off for the Lost Lake Campground were supreme! I would say the peak is just starting. Of course, initially in the climb, it was the gamble or scrub oaks that provided the color. However, after about 6 or 8 miles, the aspens began dominating the views. On some of the mountain slopes by that area, there are still some lime green leaves. So, there is more to come on a limited basis. After the Lost Lake Campground turn off, the number of aspens drop off. Once over the pass and past the Lake Irwin turn off, they have definitely peaked. They arent all blown off; they are just to that very light yellow and > 33% are blown off. That post peak color continued on down into town. We went ahead and just drove back to Ouray via down to Gunnison and west thru Montrose. The colors are stunning. The cottonwoods have the valley floors and riverbeds covered. The aspens have the distant upper 1/3rds of most hillsides covered up to treeline. Ha.. I just realized today was the first day I have ever been to Lake Irwin when it wasnt snow and ice covered. I have snowshoed there from CB, as well as squeaked thru on the very snow covered county road 12 just before they closed it.
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 4 жыл бұрын
@@campingalan that sounds positively wonderful. Thanks for the fall color update from your part of the world! It's such a gorgeous area, too. Speaking of giant aspens, one of these days I'll find Pando in Utah: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pando_(tree)

@campingalan 4 жыл бұрын
@@GrandAdventure Well...now you've added another national forest to the list that I must scour! I'm reaching back in my memory to the 90s; the last time we lived in CO. I recall some mega aspens when you take the forest roads from Paradox CO to Castle Valley, UT, over by Moab. Essentially, you're glancing the northern border of the La Sal Mtns. I may have to take a journey back there to confirm.

@@christinefarmilo1851 thank you so much! You're very kind, and we're thrilled to have you here. As for the Joshua tree, Wikipedia says this: "The name Joshua tree is commonly said to have been given by a group of Mormon settlers crossing the Mojave Desert in the mid-19th century: The tree's role in guiding them through the desert combined with its unique shape reminded them of a biblical story in which Joshua keeps his hands reached out for an extended period of time in order to guide the Israelites in their conquest of Canaan. There is, however, no direct or contemporary attestation of this origin, and the name Joshua tree is not recorded until after Mormon contact; moreover, the physical appearance of the Joshua tree more closely resembles a similar story told of Moses."

State parks are our go-to’s for all camping. Until we get more into boondocking. Very detailed review loved it! Also congrats on reaching 3k subs!!!! Hope to join you there one day :) keep up the good work.

Thanks for noticing, folks! Just keep putting out great content and you'll be surpassing us soon enough. When in campgrounds and not boondocking, we too enjoy the state park experience.

My wife and I saw your piece about Flaming Gorge and the Jug hollow area. That peninsula is right up our alley. We plan on visiting in mid June and would like your input. At that time of the year, will we have difficulty finding free camping with water access. We kayak and want to enjoy the water. In your experience, what will our chances be of finding sites with water access. We have a class A but I'm not timid about getting out there. I would appreciate your assessment of how crowded we can expect it to be. Thanks.

Thanks for all the info. I took a driving tour, last October, through Arizona and southern Utah. I was noticing all the BLM signs and a few boondockers scattered about. I had to explain to my travelling companion what it was all about. We don't have much of that here in Texas. There are a few places, though one has to really look for them. Appreciate the list you have compiled! Hopefully, my family can hit some of these spots when we hit the road soon. Take care!!

Hope it helps you and your fam! We know that we're lucky to have so much public land in the Intermountain West. We definitely felt the lack of it heading into the PNW this summer and finding ourselves in campgrounds more often than not; that's not our usual mode of camping. But it's all good, it's about just getting out there and enjoying what you find.

Mark, one more question I noticed that you do a lot of Boondocking and wonder if you ever worry about your camper being stolen when you go away exploring for the day, given these remote and isolated areas. My wife and I are doing our first ever RV road trip across the country starting in June and we have wondered about this possibility when dry camping in remote ares.

Never a worry at all, Greg, although I usually do put a relatively useless hitch lock on it just to dissuade anyone from taking it. It's far more likely that a patio chair, etc. would disappear, but that's never happened either.

I know my wife and I worry about it. I have some locks I use on the wheels and the hitch but it's still scary to leave it behind. So far no issues though.

Thank you, Greg, and absolutely! We use Cyberlink PowerDirector amzn.to/2Viht7K . We find it easier to use than Adobe products like Premiere, yet with sufficient flexibility and features that we can do pretty much what we want in the editing room. And unlike Adobe it doesn't have to be subscriptionware -- you can buy it and actually own it without paying a repeating monthly fee.

Another great option is IMovie which is free to use if you have a MAC. That and Divinci Resolve although that has a little steeper learning curve. I upgraded to Final Cut Pro X which is an upgrade from IMovie. Mac only though.

Hello, awesome presentation. We have a bumper pull a bit smaller than yours at 20ft. We were thinking of getting a 32 ft fifth wheel, but concerned about getting into some of these great places by being to big and getting stuck, restricted, etc. Is there an ideal rig? A quick opinion would be appreciated from a real traveler the way we would like travel. Thanks
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 5 жыл бұрын
Alan, we're 26' overall (the living space box is 23', the rest is the A-frame and rear bumper) and for what we do, I'm not sure that I'd want much larger. A couple of feet additional would be nice for space, but it's just the two of us and our two dogs and we had no issues traveling "part-time fulltime" for over 5 months this summer with feeling that we really needed more. Of course, though, for maneuverability a fiver is going to tow and turn differently than our bumper pull, and is easier to get turned around for the same length trailer. We're also 11'0" tall and although we have only occasionally had a problem with low branches, a fifth wheel is likely to be taller. We've certainly seen people with decent sized (~35') fifth wheels in many of the areas that we frequent, but for us it just hasn't been worth the hassle to go bigger. Hope this helps in some way and makes some degree of sense, for I feel like I'm rambling.

What did you do with your pups at the national parks?
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 5 жыл бұрын
Gordon, we typically either just tour the park in the truck with the dogs, or one of us stays back at the rig to dog-sit while the other goes for a hike, etc. That's one reason that we don't spend a lot of time in National Parks.

Love the top 10 video. Not surprised to see your choices here in Colorado. Quick question about your cssino stays... I know that most casinos on the reservations are smoking establishments but have you been to any that are non-smoking or have specific non-smoking areas as i am allergic?
