My interpretation of the Daniel Telenovela scene is that of some gay shade, delighting in the messy drama of dating of sharing exes, something that happens often in localized queer communities where there simply arent as many potential partners to chose from. And that that mirrors the slim pickings amongst vampires as a sutcultural group as well. It felt like a lighthearted and campy moment where three queer men are being catty and ribbing one another.

@NatLli

@Julandran
@Julandran 7 ай бұрын
It's also wrong again. 🤦 Best practices for historical documents is not to wear gloves with manuscripts, books, and newsprint because the diminished tactile sensation makes you more likely to accidentally rip the paper, which is more damaging in the long term than the minimal amount of oil transfered from clean, dry hands. But you *should* wear gloves to handle photographs because the paper is thicker, and skin oils are more reactive with the chemicals contained in those materials.
@MavenoftheEventide

@Julandran When I went to Tulane University last fall to read Anne Rice's diaries in their special collections, the librarian told me the exact same thing when I asked him, shouldn't I be wearing gloves? He said no gloves for the dairies, but yes gloves for the photographs.

@freddyjafar1490 In the screener version of episode 2 I saw, the lady on stage had her top ripped off and her breasts exposed as she died. The final version of the episode added in CGI hair to cover her breasts. AMC is network television and has to adhere to certain network rules in order to fulfill its contracts with its advertisers. If they broke those rules and showed more nudity/sex than allowed, their advertisers would pull their sponsorship, and they'd lose money.

I honestly read the scene between Louis and Armand at the mansion as they were so enraptured by each other that nothing else registered. They are really pushing the love story between Louis and Armand in this episode, even from the very first moment they met. I honestly like this change, the quiet pining and barely hidden desire. Loads of sexual tension, that feels very real and visceral.

In the book, Louis knew all along that Armand was the one who was responsible for her death, and it didn't change how he stayed with Armand for years later. Once he got his revenge on the theatre, all the passion in him died, so he didn't really care anymore about anything Armand did.

@@MavenoftheEventide But dosnt Armand reveal a bunch of his brutality in The Vampire Armand Louis never got while with him? Like the removal of Claudias head... Revealing he was glad she was burnt so badly because Louis was never able to find out what /he/ did to her specifically. I imagine, since theyve said they are taking all books intto consideration and adjusting to fit the series as a whole, thats all going to come as one revelation. I honestly get annoyed with Rice's constant retcons and rewriting of history. I could understand with IWAV and AVL and memory and stuff, but after that it just becomes a "whats the point, wait till the series is finished and get a summery" type of thing. Out of 100 casual Interview fans, %100 will have seen the movie, %80 will have read the first book, %60 will have made it to QotD and almost nobody sticks around to even make it to TVA... and this is made for general audiences who probably have just seen the movie and know its a book.

n the book, Louis's sister declares him dead after the plantation burns down when he's only been a vampire for 3 years, but that never stops him from having any access to his money. He'd willed the estate to a "god child" with the same name as him, so he kept everything. Show Louis is definitely smart enough to do the same. The only thing he lost in that scene in the cemetery was his last lingering connection to his mortal family.

I think I'm joining the Armand is Alice theory train because it makes no sense for Armand to know what Alice was thinking when she rejected Daniel unless he was there reading her mind. It was also strange to me that when Louis started his psychic attack Daniel corrected Louis about details he missed. I feel off about Alice because we've never seen her, not even in Daniel thoughts. We've only seen his memories of Louis and more specifically Armand.

What do you think about the theory that Armand is actually Alice in the show? Personally, I never thought Armand was Alice. However, I did believe that some of Daniel's memories with Alice were actually with Armand. This episode confirmed that for me. When Daniel talks about Alice, he seems completely detached, suggesting she was his first wife and they’ve been apart for decades. There’s no emotional connection anymore. In episode 2, when Louis tries to provoke him, Daniel brushes it off, highlighting the difference between his real memories with Alice and the ones with Armand in place of Alice. During the proposal discussion, Daniel is visibly shaken and emotional, which we didn't see earlier when Alice announced her pregnancy. This makes it clear he was actually with Armand, not Alice. Also, Daniel felt comfortable holding "Alice's" hand in Paris, hinting it was Armand, since why would holding a girl’s hand be uncomfortable or unsafe? Louis and Armand are monsters who have killed innocent people, so Daniel doesn’t need to empathize with them. Louis even used Daniel’s Parkinson’s to harm him, so it’s unreasonable to expect Daniel to be more empathetic. Armand’s attempt to soften the blow of Louis’s memory shows he genuinely cares for Daniel. In the books, Armand coped with letting Daniel go by convincing himself that Daniel only wanted immortality. But Armand’s realization of Daniel's genuine love during the rejected proposal scene is significant. There’s a clear difference between Daniel’s memories of the real Alice and Armand-as-Alice. Armand’s comment about trust and Louis’s cover-up further suggest the complexity of their relationship. If there’s another Armand and Louis scene in the next episode, it’s going to be messy!
@MavenoftheEventide
@MavenoftheEventide 7 ай бұрын
I think all that would be really really interesting, but I don't think any of it is true. I think Louis bringing up for Daniel a traumatic memory about Alice also triggered a totally different traumatic memory of Armand from 1973 after Armand "saved his life" from Louis. Alice was indeed Daniel's first wife and the mother of his two daughters (we see he still has his daughters' old toys in his apartment in the first episode of season 1). I don't think Daniel could have been involved with Armand (or any other vampires) between 1973 and 2022, otherwise he wouldn't have survived. He would have been driven to destruction. There's no amount of hypnosis that could have kept him from it.

Thank you Maven for the deep dive into the books. I read some of the Chronicle as a pre-teen and can hardly remember them now. Your breakdown of the differences in the books and show have inspired me to re-read some of the books . In interviews, Sam Reid talked about asking the director why Lestat was acting in a certain way...makes sense as you explain the book Lestat is different from the show Lestat. I am enjoying the show and think Asad is doing an amazing job as Armand. Can't wait to see his and Lestat's dynamic. And Daniel's reaction when they double-teamed him on Alice made me feel a real sense of the danger he is in.

Creole btw means anyone who was born in Louisiana while the French occupied it. It extends to not only the children of immigrants whose parents were from France, but also the Cajuns, African Americans, Islenos (Spanish speaking people who occupied Louisiana before the French), Germans, Italians, Irish, Native Americans. Anyone who was born in Louisiana while it was still a territory of France is Creole. And I don't think Louis would speak pure French. The story takes place during the 1910's. It makes sense why he spoke English. English was the language of business at that time. During the World Wars French would have been completely stigmatized because English speaking people didn't view it as "American". The only people who speak French today in Louisiana are in the rural parts. I'm Afro-Creole, and if Louis was to speak a language other than English, it would most likely be Louisiana Creole which was a language invented by African American slaves. If he received a formal education, then he should have knowledge of French, but I don't think he didn't.

What has me excited for Claudia being happy with the coven is that it will have an even more emotional impact when she & Madeline are killed. Claudia is becoming attached to these vampires so the idea of them suddenly cruelly turning on her would be devastating to witness. We already got a glimpse of her happiness quickly squashed when the old world vampire killed herself and she barely knew her. I actually liked the theater scene even more than the film version & book simply because it is more cruel. It's obvious Santiago (or perhaps it's actually Armand doing it) is hypnotizing Annika & when the hypnosis is taken away it feels much darker. I am not liking the messy way they are feeding but it is what it is. And the scene with Armand & Louis talking while the massacre is going on is fine but I didn't feel it was needed. Louis' money was dried up due to prohibition and him owning a club that's main source of income was those drinking & remember he severed ties to everyone in New Orleans before the party so there's no one to get money from. I still think Armand is controlling things, we've had a few moments where Louis catches his memories are not fully there and now we're seeing it from Daniel's side. I do think it'll be revealed that Daniel is a member of the Talamasca and he'll basically serve as a David replacement. That's just a prediction

I think Louis was still talking while Daniel was having the memory. Because Louis asks him what Alice said, then the next time Louis's talking, he says "For the third time, what did she say?" So the second time must have been while Daniel was having the memory. He was so caught up in that memory that he didn't even hear Louis ask the second time. Enjoying the show and your videos. My background is that I read the second book, and the original movie. Adaptations should stand on their own and I don't mind at all that it is a significantly different story. However, I feel the shows metaphors are trying to more universal and broadly humanistic in certain ways than it should be. The source materials themes are linked by what you might call "the fatigue of immortality." A fun exercise that asks us to go beyond the revulsion of predator and prey and imagine what it would mean to actually live thousands of years. The show seems to be dropping the ball here, at least to me. "The world changes, yet we do not." The idea that a vampire must reach out for a connection the world around them, or degrade into what Stephen Kings calls a "dull, moronic evil." The show does have a theme of connection, but it is a more traditional sense of outcast and belonging. Nothing bad about that, but it turns all the vampire stuff to just superficial spray paint on a traditional story.

I understand when you get so attached like that, that even the fact that they're on top of a monument is a problem, when doesn't need to have any fancy explanation other than they can and do want to be there, to chill...or having trouble understanding why Louis lost track of his money at that time... As someone who doesn't have that level of attachment, I'm loving the path the show is taking, just the fact that they made Louis work for a tv series it's a win! lol

Did anyone else notice how Armand's expression changes as the story is being told about how they met? When he embraces Louis's hand, he quickly looks up at Daniel and then immediately looks down at the floor, almost as if he's sad or lying. The Alice attack on Daniel seemed out of character for Louis. Did Armand make him do this ? I was surprised Armand didn’t stop him like he did when he asked about Claudia’s assault.

I'm really wondering how much of what we're seeing in this episode is actually true, or if it's a false memory manipulated by Armand... Something about how perfect or sickeningly sweet their whole meet-cute was felt off to me, and the way Louis was so forward while they were talking outside the mansion at the end, like he was remembering himself to be more confident than he actually was...I don't know, something just felt not quite right about it all.

Someone else might have mentioned it before, but my personal thoughts about the show using the word “ancient” for Armand. While the Armand we know from the books would not be considered ancient, the show chose to portray him by a British actor whose parents immigrated from Bangladesh to England. I can’t help but wonder if l this decision came from choosing to change his place of origin and age, or if they plan to come up with a different backstory for him. Don’t know, just wondering.
@mayaamis

they changed his ethnic origin and details of his backstory but not his vampire age... they already revealed his age in the show at the end of season 1 in Dubai. he literally says to Daniel he's 500-ish which is pretty much the same as he is in the books in present time... either way 500 is not considered ancient to vampires but I guess it's also a matter of perspective. it might seam ancient to Louis who's only little over century old lol

In the book, Louis's sister declares him dead after the plantation burns down when he's only been a vampire for 3 years, but that never stops him from having any access to his money. He'd willed the estate to a "god child" with the same name as him, so he kept everything. The only thing he lost in that scene in the cemetery was his last lingering connection to his mortal family.

Thanks for your reviews. I always look forward to them. I'm sure it's partially intentional, but I feel no chemistry between Louis and Armand, and it's especially notable when Louis has scenes with Lestat. Honestly, I can't wait for that to be over. I like Daniel, but they lay on his snarkiness kinda thick at times, and it gets old. I like Claudia though. I also enjoy the scenes from the past way more than the present. Past Louis I like, current Louis no.

I'm stumbling around the time line a bit ...I thought in the books that after Paris the San Francisco events took place many years after ...but now all the action until this Dubai setting has to take place in Daniels natural lifetime which would rush Louis's recovery from the Paris disaster ......so was Louis able to get thru that in the compressed timeline or has some of his memory been stolen by Armand to keep him sane/from going rouge /feral ?? just puzzled
@MavenoftheEventide
@MavenoftheEventide 7 ай бұрын
In the books, the Paris events take place in 1871, and the SF interview is in 1973. In the show, Paris takes place in 1945-1948ish, but the SF interview is still 1973 (so Louis's had about 25 years to "recover"). Then the Dubai interview is 2022. So Daniel was about 20 years old in 1973, but he wouldn't have been alive during the Paris years in the 1940s, of course.

Question: Do the theater vampire in the books have to drink human blood every night? I remember in the scene with Armand and Louis when the theater troop is attacking the mansion that Armand says “You don’t feed on human blood every night?” or something like that. I just feel that whole group feeding on individual humans each night would leave a murder trail, unless they all just drink from one victim during the play each night? Does the troop not know they can also eat rats, etc?
@MavenoftheEventide
@MavenoftheEventide 7 ай бұрын
In the books, all vampires have to drink blood every night until they get to be hundreds of years old (or otherwise super powerful, like Lestat post-QOTD). And actually, they not only have to drink blood, but have to KILL every night. They aren't strong enough to master the Little Drink, again, until they're extremely old or powerful. When Louis was trying to live off animals, his was in absolute misery, and he wouldn't have been able to last long doing only that. That's why he went back to killing at least one human every single night after Claudia's arrival snapped him out of it. In the book, he doesn't have time to drink any human blood the night he kills the revenant, so he's in a race to the sunrise to try to get some blood before he loses himself to madness, so that's why he grabs the rat out of the wall and eats it. He (and the other relatively young vampires, like those at the theatre) absolutely have to have blood every single night, or they shrivel into a skeletal husk (like Lestat does when he goes into the earth in Egypt before Marius rescues him). As for the troop not knowing they can eat rats, most vampires would never WANT to eat rats when their only true source of pleasure in existence is human blood. In the books, it's often mentioned that cities of certain sizes can only support so many vampires, because of how they have to each kill one person every night. Paris is one of the biggest cities in the world, so it can support a coven of 15 vampires, but that's why they're not allowed to make any new vampires without the coven master's permission. They have to keep the population controlled.

But at the same time Daniel is a petty old bitch, feeling like shit for a whole lot of reasons, so i guess if he feels like he can make fun of the beings who are clearly in control of the situation, he will do it. He seems to be feeling worse day by day... Oh AND its funny bc the fact that Armand, Lestat and louis have all been in a relationship with each others is just peak queer behavior! do you think Alice is Armand?...
@MavenoftheEventide
@MavenoftheEventide 7 ай бұрын
No, absolutely not. I think after Armand saved Daniel’s life in 1973, they let Daniel go and never saw him again. That’s how Daniel was able to grow up and have a successful career. If Armand was ever involved with him again after the first interview, Daniel would have deteriorated like in the books and never had his career. Also, the only reason Armand was interested in Daniel is because he and Louis were broken up and he needed someone new. Here, he and Louis stayed together, and Louis is all that Armand wants. He’s obsessed with proving to Louis he’s better than Lestat, so he would never cheat on Louis like Lestat did. He stuck right by Louis’s side the whole time, and never cared about Daniel again until he came to Dubai. The show has made all that completely clear. Daniel being an old, successful journalist means he never could have had any romantic history with Armand, no matter the level of hypothetical hypnosis. Being that close to a vampire will ruin a mortal. He wouldn’t have survived. The fact that he survived AND successfully means he had to be living all those years vampire-free.

In book 2 (The Vampire Lestat), Lestat says he "fell fatally in love with" Louis on the night he met him. He's always loved him from the very beginning, in spite of all the frustrating things about Louis's rejection of vampirism. Lestat falls in love easily, and all the time, but Louis is the only one he lived with like a marriage and the only one he keeps coming back to over and over again. He's never loved anyone else more than Louis.

Daniel and Armand are getting closer, Armand is starting to like him and Daniel will reciprocate just in time to be sympathetic to Armand when we find just how far Armand has gone to get Louis. I also think this was an episode written for Daniel to lash out enough(riled up by seeing 2 men playing happy couple ) that we understand Louis getting mad. I firmly believe Daniel is in denial, they can tell he's gay.
