ep025 Where does the TC-01 Belong!? TC-01 Build and Run

I have a TC01. Great kit and it can be difficult to work on because the design impedes easy access to differentials and electronics, and spur. It also requires some shimming of the diffs to ensure proper mesh. I followed the instructions and my rear differential was still not properly meshed and ended up stripping. I went nuclear on my TC01 and bullet proofed the differentials and drive train. Yeah Racing universals all around and added the TB05 TRF aluminum case differentials with steels gears, cross shafts, and the aluminum diff joints. I spent way too much money on upgrading the TC01, but it is worth it. Oh, and I also upgraded the differential crown bevel rings to the carbon TB04 ones. That option comes with the larger and smaller bevel gear in plastic/carbon. Absolute must if you plan to race and want to increase durability.

This kit looks like replacement of older TA and TB series kits, which came with a body and IMO were actually great value (for a tamiya kit). Those ended after lackluster of TA06/TB04 releases.. I'd like to see TC-01 being successful, so we'd get more releases in that range again. And maybe re-introduction of TB-series, which TC tries to replace. That being said, the chassis is a little letdown, especially due to large integrated plastic parts. Great thing about kits like TA05/TB03 was, that anyone could make a custom chassis with different layout, something Tamiya themselves used in VDS/VDF releases, and would help with TC-01 aswell to make a long wheelbase variant for proper Formula cars... That IMO really hurt this chassis, as short F-E looks just weird and we had to wait over 3 years for a proper touring car release.

It would be sweet if they somehow did a TRF version of this with double-deck carbon fiber and some sort of complicated system of standoffs like the old TA-02 carbon chassis! Of course, knowing Tamiya, it would be crazy expensive (but I'd still buy it0.

@@quietrc yep, they did this with numerous TA/TB chassis, most recently TA07 and XV-01. Unfortunately it's not possible with gearboxes moulded into chassis. Separate gearboxes for TC-01 would be very useful

I got a TC-01 recently and the build was really good, I loved it. I'm going to race mine box stock for a few meetings then upgrade later. It's definitely an oddball chassis, but probably one of the coolest looking. Great video!!

Yeah, I'm ready to really give this a few laps at the track and dial it in. May do this crazy swap/upgrade for the upper arms to give me more adjustability.

Nice detailed review. I've been looking at getting back into the hobby and looking for a fun to build 1/10 TC kit with nice 'dynamic' handling good for brushless lipo parking lot bashing, the TC01 is insanely cool to me because of the cantilever suspension, but the problem to me is that you need $$$ in upgrades from the get-go for it to be worthwhile. I'm sure this chassis would sell far better if Tamiya just sold a rolling chassis 'pro' version with at least full metal drivetrain, full sealed ball bearings, sway bars, hex hardware, and threaded aluminium dampers. I would love a TC01, but it sells for the same price as the upcoming Team Associated Apex2 Hoonicorn/Hoonitruck kit version which has the aforementioned upgrades by default, value for money wise the Team Associated is far better. Even the Traxxas 4-tec 2.0 BL deserves a mention as although it's as plastic-y as the Tamiya, at least you get a full waterproof brushless setup and 2.4ghz radio also for the same price. I may consider the Tamiya XV02-RS-Pro but even still it costs a chunk more than the Apex2 kit. Tamiya overcharges imo, unless they announce a 'TC01 Pro' version, or I catch the current Formula-E/CLK-GTR on a big sale, I'm probably going to buy the Apex2 Kit.

Their entry-level kits are accurately priced, but the mid (like the TC01) and top end are crazy expensive, agreed.

Thanks for the cool video; I’m hoping they release it with the Porsche Gt1 body….by the way the Tb03, Tb04, Ta05v.Ii, and Ta06 all had inboard front suspension. The f201 had full inboard suspension.

Just bought this kit, along with some of the YeahRacing upgrades… however, I can’t work out where the TATC-007 Aluminium front chassis stiffener is supposed to be fitted. I could not see it at all in your video… did you leave it off??

I do think I left it off because I used the other chassis stiffening carbon fiber bits. I just went and looked at my TC-01 and don’t see the TC-007 on there. I will tell you, with the parts I DID put on there, the chassis is stiff as hell! I may need to remove a few bits of if I want to increase some of the rotation around turns.
