I never met him, but of course saw him play when I was a kid, i awe of his 70 goals run. What can I say, he just seems like a likable and friendly person. That footage just brought a smile to my face ! Thank you, I needed that !

Great video! Few edits: @2:24 Bernie Nicholls was traded to the Rangers Jan. 20, 1990, he was then traded to the Oilers Dec 6, 1991, in a package deal for yes, Mark Messier. He never went back to Kings as a player. @2:40 Unfortunately, he never played in a Stanley Cup Finals, he played for the Devils in '92-93, who lost to the Penguins in the first round. He was amazing, I remember him, he was elite.

36 short-handed goals by the 1983-84 Oilers, a record that in my opinion cannot be broken. Unless of course minor penalties become a 5 minute power play for example or just more penalties altogether. One mistake by the opposing team usually meant Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri or anyone else on the Oilers getting that short-handed goal. Fast forward 5 years later and look who's there on the Kings: Wayne Gretzky, Bernie Nicholls, Luc Robitaille, Dave Taylor, Steve Duchesne and Steve Kasper. They had a very legitimate chance to break that record. They didn't. They scored 22 short-handed goals that year. You can guess who scored more: Edmonton (27) and Chicago (25). Edmonton without Gretzky still scored the most short-handed goals in the NHL that year (1988-89). Incredible.

Bernie Nicholls scoring statistics for 1988-89 would surprise anyone who didn't know hockey. That's unless of course you knew the Kings got Wayne Gretzky that year in the most lopsided trade, well some say sale, the NHL has ever seen. The Oilers tried to convince the NHL brass to void the deal that sent Gretzky to Los Angeles but to no avail. I never did check to see how many of Nicholls 70 goals that year were assisted by Gretzky. I do know that many times both killed penalties as was customary by so many teams back then to use their two top skilled forwards when short-handed.

Did Nicholls even have a partnership with Gretzky? They were both centres, so they would have been on separate lines, no?

Nope, but they played PP/PK together. A lot of open ice with Gretz. But Bernie earned those 70 goals, no question.
