Good to see more RT work. They never quite seemed to achieve the cult status of the Routemaster yet were more numerous and played such an essential role in LT history. The maintenance work carried out on these and subsequently the RM at Aldenham and Chiswick was a monumental setup. I’m sure this one will look fantastic once finished.

Tip. Cleaning stains off cups. 1 teaspoon of Bicarb in mug fill with boiling water, leave for an hour then rinse and wipe out. Magic stuff. Tea will taste even better! 😂😂😂

With regards to the air tank. There were two types fitted to the RT bus. Clayton, and Westinghouse. It was easy to see which type was fitted, because the Clayton had two metal plugs on the bottom and the Westinghouse had three. (Clay-ton 2. West-ting-House 3). We would normally fit the appropriate type tank to the same make compressor. The day foreman would generally want these as a matching pair. As I remember it, the Westinghouse could be fitted to the Clayton air tank but not the other way around. You also had to drain down the air tank at every rota inspection, to let out water condensation. If the compressor was passing oil, into the tank you also had to be aware of that. A small amount of oil was acceptable, but more oil than usual in the tank would indicate compressor to change before service. The drivers cab compressor air intake,also had a filter, and that should also be changed. A dirty blocked filter would restrict the flow of air into the air tank. That could also give the service driver problems on the road. So we would make sure those were changed frequently.

I remember RT 2629 along with other RT's and RF's, when it was at Woolwich Preservation Group, Purland Rd, in early 80's. Took a few photos of it which I still have. It also attended Plumstead Garage open day in '83.

I know the Routemaster is the iconic London bus but I always preferred the more industrial look of the RT. Went to school on one every day in the 70s and my abiding memory is of them with about 80 passengers aboard, 30 of them standing on the lower deck, boiling over as they crawled to the top of Eltham Hill on a hot Summer's day..

It was great to have a quick word with you at Prestatyn the other week, and a ride round on the RM - many thanks. Keep up the good work with this RT, both myself and my Mrs thoroughly enjoy each episode. Keep well. all of you.

DAVE AND GRAHAM we did both those jobs ........the air tank is bloody heavy and we took that out by hand on the ground as we didnt have any means to lift the bus,but it looked great when it went back on. by the way the header fuel tank was a pain ,,,,,,,we changed it 3 times as everyone we tried leaked and i still think the one we used is still leaking a bit now but we are working on it good luck with yours ...channel is great loads of good tips

That is a Coffee Pot not a Tea Pot and if BR or earlier British Railways will have the relevant logo stamped somewhere. It may be a BTH (hotel) one and will be marked as such. Genuine Pullman, first class and BTH ones were often silver plate (EPNS) and will carry the silver plate marks as well. Sterling Silver was too expensive. You need to get an Induction Heater, safer than an open flame but will not work if not a steel nut or fitting.
@ook2763

Andy, are you sure you did get a real BR tea pot? I'm asking this because I would expect the thing to have a BR logo on it some where, but I didn't see any, did you? And for 22 quit I would expect that.

i get this is a restoration project and its nice to keep things original but would you not benefit from using a modern paint system rather than a very old 1K system? A modern paint system would give better protection and last longer before it needed doing again and you would not need any extra tools. Using a poly strip disc on the large flat areas could also save a large amount of time on prep compared to a needle scaler, you can get them off ebay, amazon etc and they just fit on an angle grinder (115mm or 125mm) and will remove old paint and rust etc. If you have a roloc/angled die grinder you can also get 50mm and 75mm for smaller/hard to get to areas
