Credit the production team, writer and director for tackling a very topical and taboo subject for the time period particularly in the 1950's. I didn't find it "melodramatic" to address this in the least. Not sure if that was what your closing commentary was based on and I don't want to leave any spoilers but I found it poignant that it was handled in a very deft manner. Kudos to the cast.
