Thank you for showing how labour intensive this restoration process is. Very wise to preserve and protect before even getting the new wood into the vehicle. Astounding as this was a mass-produced vehicle decades ago!

I've just done this myself only it's taken me four years to get the rest of the car in good enough shape to actually fit the frame, basically I've re-built the whole car. My mistake was to buy the timber sections I thought I needed before actually taking the thing apart which meant, after I realised it all needed replacing, I bought everything separately and had to assemble it all myself. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and buying the side frames ready assembled would have made life a lot easier - buy where's the fun in that I hear you say😁 Fitting the roof and guttering is a whole new world of entertainment too😉

On a nice day last Thursday, I travelled from Whitefield, Manchester, to a Minor restorers in Luddenfoot, near Halifax, around 25 miles and 40 minutes' drive from Chez Nous, to West Yorks Minor Centre. There were around half a dozen in the process of being repaired, in a showroom there were around 7 or 8 vehicles, which looked in pristine condition. I had a quick chat with the proprietor, my Traveller is in need of repairs. I'm due to retire shortly, so hopefully funds will allow for any wood or bodywork repairs, the mechanicals are a bit more straightforward to deal with, even for someone of my somewhat limited ability. I'm glad to see these specialist repairers are still in business.

We had lots of these in the 70s and early 80s and it’s good to watch a really thorough restoration underway. Ours were almond green, navy blue and white. The oldest gave parts transplants to the newest. Such simple cars but great back then.

Very informative. Thanks Ian. I love all car restoration series, this guy's work is amazing. On another note, believe it or not, at the same time as when this video popped up on my screen, the Rainman Ray's Repairs channel popped up with a video about an end-of-life 181,000 mile '04 PT Crusher and showing us what was wrong with it before parking it up for condemnment. Might be worth a watch for HubNut if he gets a spare 15 minutes.

Was at an amazing wedding at Dihewid, which is where Cambrian Classics is located, last Saturday. Reception in massive marquee behind the village hall. Hilarious ‘speech’ by one of his neighbours, the plumber who is a classic car collector himself.

@@HubNut The local area is so confusing LOL. I travel through Llanarth several times a week, often several times a day, yet I miss these things. Went for a couple of days to St Mawes in Cornwall about three weeks ago and who should we meet at the Idle Rocks Hotel but a couple who live in the old police house in Llanarth, next to the yard where vans are sold. They’d owned it for 37 years and I’d never met them before only to meet them some 350 miles from home. Pass their house most days.

My best best friend had a Morris Minor Van and a Traveller, the hours he spent trying to keep the wood in good condition as it lived outside I couldn't count. Still miss him, this video brought some great memories back Mr HubNut, many thanks.

Now there's a coincidence, having the same name. I also had a Minor van and Traveller back in the 70s, when I lived in North Manchester. I still have an F Reg Traveller, I keep it under cover, either at our unit at work or under a heavy duty car cover, to protect the wood.

The new ash frame looks great and the old ash frame can made into something else. That's the beauty of old cars because everything on the car could be recycled unlike todays modern stuff. If you find yourself in Lincolnshire again i'd recommend a visit to the Lincolnshire Vintage Vehicle Society. They have allsorts there including a 1937 Ford 7W Woodie with a V8 along with pre war buses which one of them is having most of the wooden frame replaced.

BTW, I forgot to mention the Granddaddy of them all, the original Morris Minor Centre of Charles Ware, ceased trading at the end of last year, although the spare parts section of the business is still operating. The operation was set up in Bath in 1976, later relocating to Bristol. Charles Ware himself passed away around 5 years or so ago, I'd say it's unlikely that had he not set up the original company, very few Minors would still be on the road today. I met him in the late 1990s, I was working in the Bristol area one weekend. I remember taking pictures of the various models on the site, there must have been upwards of 40 vehicles on display, including a pick up and a couple of vans. He was very courteous towards me and very helpful, even though at the time I didn't have a Moggy. The first two vehicles I ever owned were an ex GPO van I bought in 1972 and a Traveller I bought the following year, after the gearbox gave up on the van. Then I went from 1974 to 2010 without a Moggy, but I returned to my first love eventually, a car I still possess today. I still see a number of Moggies on the road and am a member of the Lancashire MMOC, which does much to promote the continuation of the iconic vehicle, the first British car to sell a million.

Wood lives and breathes, it also rots, over time. Just saying, as I can't imagine why no one seems to have come up with an alternative replacement. That said, I'm loving this restoration.

There are some types of timber that are less likely to rot and some that are rot proof. Tasmanian Huon Pine for example....highly regarded in marine applications but very pricey. It's one of the oldest living organisms on earth.

Those water drain holes on the window, to aid draining how about using some brass tubing which can be epoxied into the hole therefore aid water egress.

What varnish is used on the new wood these days? I remember scraping down with glass and several coats of yacht varnish around September every year (nipper helping a neighbour)

OK, here’s a dumb question from the dry Southwest of the United States: for cars like this Minor that is on its second full restoration, is any thought typically given by British car enthusiasts to just not take cherished cars like this out on wet days which will inevitably lead to further rust (and wood rot). I realize there are a lot of rainy days in the UK, but for the amount of heartache and work involved in dealing with rusty cars, wouldn’t a sensible alternative on a hobby car like this be to preserve it as long as possible by avoiding rain at all costs?

It's so wet here that if you wait for dry days, you just won't drive your nice car very much at all.

The real issue in the UK is salting of roads over the winter period which leads to terminal corrosion. Rainfall during the remainder of the year not so detrimental 😁

My father bought a 1924 Lancia Lambda in 1945 and kept it running for the rest of his life - right through to 2014. He never ever drove it on salted roads, but we ploughed on through rainstorms and floods at all other times of the year. So the comment is right, avoid salt, keep it in a garage and make sure frame drains are clear.

Makes you wonder how much more effort goes into rebuilding these versus how they were built when they were in the factory, given that BMC/BL were a little notorious for their "that'll do" mentality... :\

The Morris Motors Bodies Branch was originally the Hollock & Pratt coachbuilding business, which Morris had bought out in 1923. The people building these bodies would have mostly been time-served craftsmen, and as long as they were properly cared for, they would last the lifetime of the car, which in any case was only expected to be ten years or so. It's a credit to BMC's engineers and designers that thousands of Minors are still running today, more than fifty years since the last one came off the line, and 75 years after the car went into production.

My uncle had one of these 20 years ago. He sold it to a police sargent, one month after car was destroyed the sargent crashed it into parked cars drunk, no tax insurance, Sad end to a beautiful car.
