EP32 - SAILING to White Cove | 189 MILE WEEKEND | RESCUE ASSIST

November 17, 2023 - We have been planning for a couple weeks to take a couple extra days off work and our daily lives to put some serious miles under the keel. As serious as coastal cruising allows anyway. I wasn't sure if I was going to take STOKED (my boat) or if I would go with Mark on Keeldragger. Clearly I decided to go on Keeldragger, it's a lovely vessel.
Friday morning-ish, with a last minute plan, we pushed off for Cat Harbor on the back side of Catalina Island. The planned destination quickly changed to White Cove Complex on the front side of the island (shocker!).
The idea was that we would drop the hook, rest, eat, then depart around 9pm for San Diego since we couldn't go to Santa Cruz Island or any Channel Islands due to weather and swell conditions.

at 2:06 minutes, I like this trip already ! 69 years old, born in Torrance, and raised in Wilmington, I have NEVER been to Catalina or been on a boat !! But people like you inspire me to BLOW THIS CHICKEN COOP and buy a sailboat (OR a Hatteras 53 M/Y) and go away to something nicer than Sacramento, Calif ! Thinking of single after 30 years. THIS looks like a way to do that. Thanks !!

That Valiant is a really nice boat, and well accommodated. The stack pack zipper is genius and safer too. Nice video Andy, looking forward to the next part. Also saving the Sea doo from certain death was epically hilarious.

dude, Andy, i'm loving the new intro. it's well put together, tells who you are and what the channel is about, but it's also short and to the point. it's a really solid intro. great episode, and i'm really excited to see the next vid cuz i was actually looking into moorings in that area, but I've been having trouble trying to figure out where i would park my SUV while on my boat (when i get one). i want to try to find somewhere near a mooring that's pretty safe and inexpensive. that way i can park near the boat so i can just take a quick dingy ride to my suv when i need to go pickup materials or food while i'm fixing up the boat. i have an uncle in San Diego who would let me park my vehicle at his place once i start actually sailing, but i think it would be a real big pain to try to get to and from his place every time i need to go pick up something bigger than what i could easily transport on a bike. so ya, I'm really looking forward to the next episode

So is next week "Part 2", then the following week "Part 3"?. I have always wanted to sail the Santa Annas from San Diego to Catalina, hang out until they die, and then sail back on the prevailing winds. Looking forward to seeing what you guys do.

Don't forget to point out "Warehouse One" is an icon of the Harbor and was the central distribution point for Navy and Marines during WW II. (It's also a landmark).

I did not know that. That area is Marks stopping ground, it’s interesting with a lot to see.

It's kinda like Angle's Gate, The Vincent Thomas, The old Ferry Building, The QM, The Mad Mad World Palm trees at Abalone Cove, The remains of the Marineland Pier, The remains of The Dominator (low tide only these days), ... there is a bunch around where you sail. I suspect you know the old dome building was (next to QM) where HH's Hercules was on display after it left its hanger under the Vincent Thomas (Pedro side) opposite the Fireboat's House. Yes, Warehouse One is an important one to know.
