EP36 Barn Owl - Bird Song

The Barn Owl (Tyto alba) is a nocturnal bird of prey found throughout much of the world. It is distinguished by its heart-shaped face and white to light-brown plumage, with darker markings on the wings and back. The Barn Owl has excellent hearing and vision, which allows it to hunt in complete darkness.
The Barn Owl hunts primarily by sound, using its acute hearing to detect prey such as rodents, small mammals, and insects. It can locate prey even in complete darkness, using its specialized facial feathers to capture and direct sound to its ears. Once it has detected its prey, the Barn Owl swoops down from a perch or hovers in the air before pouncing on its target with its sharp talons.
The Barn Owl has a distinctive call that can be described as a screech or a hiss. It is often heard at night when the bird is hunting or defending its territory. The male and female also engage in duets during courtship, with the male producing a high-pitched scream followed by a low-pitched hoot and the female responding with a trill.
Despite its nocturnal habits, the Barn Owl is sometimes seen during the day, particularly when it is nesting or roosting. It prefers to nest in cavities such as old buildings, trees, or cliffs and will also use nest boxes provided by humans. The Barn Owl is an important predator in many ecosystems and is a symbol of wisdom and good luck in some cultures.
