Sorry to see this. I am really surprised to see what huge damage the boat has taken… I was seriously considering a Hanse as my next boat, but I can’t get over the amount of damage you have suffered. I had an X-442 X-Yacht (danish built) and once had a bad grounding on an uncharted rock (after the Tsunami in Thailand), but the only damage we had was to the bottom of the keel…. So I guess I’ll have to save up more and stick to X-Yachts. Good luck with the repairs !!
@SailingAurora8 ай бұрын
The repairs are all done now. The Xyachts are built with a steel grid and very strong but will a fin keel, inevitably you will break something if you hit a rock hard enough. There was an X Yacht in the yard recently with the same damage as ours, had to have the grid glassed back to the hull, so they aren't immune. The damage to our boat was in 2020, she is stronger than ever now 💪. Hope you find a good boat, cheers

Hi Chris. Thanks for the episode - as you promised. I hope that at this time the fixing of Aurora is going well and starting to be ready. Friend of mine had his Hanse on the rocks last year. Speed was 4 knots and the damage was similar. It took 3 months to fix.

You are welcome, She will go into the workshop beginning of December, there is no rush and I would prefer her to be in a nice warm workshop during the harsh months of winter. The estimation is also 3 months to fix, we are very much looking forward to the season next year now
@topc98584 жыл бұрын
@@SailingAurora They should laminate the structural parts to the hull in these production boats like Hanse so that they are stronger in small groundings. In this case I think that it is not about how the boat was build - it is just a fact that if you hit a rock 5 - 7 knots only boats with long keels (or new linjet with the clever keel system) will not have big damage.

Oh no ... nobody looks after a boat like the owner! Had friends run our Hanse aground twice; one with a Yachtmaster at the helm and another, a Day Skipper. Both times at low speed into soft sand. Thankfully, no visible damage inside or out but will be taking an extra close look when she's on the hard this winter. You guys must be gutted and really wondering if chartering Aurora is worth the hassle. Be interested to see how your experts fix this. Best of luck.

Hi Ian, in the UK when I was on my dads boat, we used to hit the bottom all of the time around Poole harbour due to tides and shallow estuaries. It wasn't so much of a problem as it was sand and mud, so not too much concern. Almost certainly when you hit the bottom up here you will hit a rock :( I hope your boat will be fine. We have kind of gotten over the whole ordeal now and looking forward to seeing the repair and getting a stronger boat. It has given me a lot of time over the last few months to do a lot of projects also which has been nice. As for the chartering you are absolutely right we are looking at our options at the moment and we may take her off charter. The benefits are not outweighing the cons this year. Cheers, Chris
@iancoverdale9984 жыл бұрын
I wonder if you normally have the depth sounder calibrated to water depth or depth under the keel.
@SailingAurora4 жыл бұрын
@@iancoverdale998 Currently it's calibrated to the depth from the transducer, not ideal but I know it will hit the bottom at around 1.6-1.7m, Aurora's draft is 2.1m. I have been meaning to calibrate it to show depth under keel. Probably will do this, but I think they would have grounded anyways
@iancoverdale9984 жыл бұрын
Prior to our boat's first grounding, the IS40 depth instruments were showing water depth and fish finder display which uses a separate transducer was showing transducer depth. Post first grounding, thinking this may have caused confusion, changed these both to depth under keel; this did not prevent a second grounding so you're probably right, Chris!

We charter in the UK and The Med. I think it is to do with your up bringing, but we always leave the boat cleaner than we find it. We always take significantly more care than if we owned the boat. The thought of having to report such an incident to the owners through poor seamanship and common indecency, would probably see me look towards a different leisure activity. I have seen people who have the Day Skipper certificate, but I wouldn't go out with them as the Skipper, even if you paid me. As we picked up our charter this Summer, only 2 berths away was a 1 year old Dufour 412 that had been ran aground at 8kts off Hamstead Point, IOW that same week. People were injured and the damage was significant. Apparently an 'experienced' skipper on-board. Why do people who are leisure cruising feel the need to come in close to the shallows? I think that people assume the seabed is flat without rocks or obstructions. Accidents do happen, but some are just down to incompetence.

@twiper4 жыл бұрын
@@SailingAurora I have seen some problems with jeanneau and beneteau regarding the mast and the construction around it. But think every boat brand has it's ups and downs. When Bavaria boats drop the keel it's due to delamination and not the keel bolts. Water is simply seeping into the laminate around the keel and weakens the hull which leads to a loose keel and in worst case the keel will drop. When "expedition evans" grind around in the bottom there is also water in the construction so nice to see they know what to look after when digging. I'm also excited to see what "plastskador" finds in your boat, but if the boat was lifted on land around when the damage was made I think the water intrusion into the laminate is minimal. If there is any water it will probably dry out over the winter on land.

As tragic as this damage is, such a boat should be able to withstand a ground contact like this. For reasons of profit maximization, they refrain from building the keel-hull connection more stable. With a steel frame to which the keel is bolted, the boat would not have to be in the shipyard for weeks. The most experienced sailors can make mistakes and touch rocks.
@SailingAurora3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Don't think many boats, would have withstood an impact like this. And if you see look 4:48 min and see their track on the chart plotter you can see that this was due to a reckless skipper. Completely agree even the most experienced can make mistakes, but this was pure negligence. Cheers, Chris & Tanja

Really feel for you as seeing your pride and joy damaged must be so horrible, especially by such a stupid lack of concentration by the charter skipper. Good job they were in a well built Hanse as a lesser boat could of lost the keel, judging by the groves in the steel it was quite an impact. Good luck with the repairs and a reinforced Aurora will be in good shape for the next season. Take care.
@SailingAurora4 жыл бұрын
Appreciated Jon, yup it shouldn't have happened and it was very annoying. True the hull did it's job and kept everything together, there was some water ingress at the time but I think it was due to the keel separating for a very short period of time and then resealing. The grooves in the solid iron keel do show there was one hell of an impact, I was a little shocked that they told me that it was very slow speed, but that's what every charterer who runs aground says apparently. I'm sure she will be great next year. We will be doing a mini series of the repair of Aurora so stay tuned :) Hope you guys are doing ok amid another lockdown over there. Cheers, Chris

I remember holidaying on those Greek island flotilla yachts and someone when mooring bows to the key rammed the bow onto the harbour wall. causing unwanted damage. For myself I'd prefer a long Keel with encapsulated internal ballast. Be a constant worry that the Keel was going to fall off. Hope the insurance covered the cost of repair.

This was gut wrenching to watch. I'm very sorry for both of you. I have a Beneteau 40 with similar construction, and grounding hard like this is my worst fear. Sadly, the reality is that people chartering boats can be extremely careless. I can understand an anchor dragging while you are sleeping and a boat grounding that way, but there is no excuse for what happened. I wish you much luck in getting your boat back soon better than new! BTW - documenting a professional and complete repair will pay off later when you need to sell the boat and it comes up as an objection to the purchase.

Hey Randy, thanks for the comment. Your right, with these boats, with the way they are build they are so rigid with no flex and the grid can crack away from the hull. Last ridiculous event in a bay in Symi last fall - guide books says where and where not to anchor. They chose to anchor where not to. Early morning as they were trying to leave realized their anchor was hooked on rocks. Instead of gettin in the water they spent a long time tryibg to free it by going as fast as they could to pull the anchor out. Non stop gunning it until the boat came to a dead stop from the chain. The damage they inflicted on the new looking production boat all morning until they finally pulled out will be discovered in time. There is a reason many people avoid charter boats. Many issues have been suffered by us to steer clear of them. Good luck in your rebuild.

Tack. She will be stronger and better next year, in November it seems so far away though. Just looking forward to next summer now :)

Would this boat now be considered a Salvage? If you sold this boat would you even have to tell the buyer? My heart goes out to both of you. Very painful Im sure. How apologetic was the guy? Enough to buy the boat from you so you can buy a new one? Or just the other kind of apology, where the perp gets to virtue signal away responsibility so he feels better, not so much about you at all ;) Now everyone that owns an insurance policy will be forced to collectively pay for the recklessness of one person. This is why Communism doesn't work either, lol.

Hi Mitchel. The damage assessment of the boat did not deem it to ba a salvage. But admitted we have had the same thoughts due to the extend of the damages. Yes, we would tell a potential buyer, but we really love our boat, so there is hopefully now selling her anytime soon. The charterer did apologies, but also lied and said that they haden't been going very fast when the grounding happened, which have later been assessed was not true. Cheers, Chris & Tanja

@@SailingAurora Makes me wonder what it actually takes for a boat to become a salvage title? All that really matters is that you enjoy your boat in anyway you deem fit. Aurora looks much happier lately and that seems to reflect on the owners ;)

Hi there. Thank you for your kind words. Completely understand what you are saying, and it is tempting, but that could potentially cause us a lot of problems for us. If we ever charter Aurora out, hopefully not, they are however blacklisted from our boat, along with another group that stole items from the boat! Stay safe, Chris & Tanja
