I really enjoyed this conversation with Alister. It is a podcast I will listen to again to take in all that was discussed. Like you both mentioned, I started out trying to improve my photography in a purely technical way but people like both of you have helped me begin to do photography for myself and to make the images I want to make, and I find this so much more satisfying and empowering because I no longer compare my work to anyone else's. Thank you both for a simple but very deep message.

It really resonates with what Alister said about critiques because it is so much about an individuals opinion and I think that’s a big part of the reason I’ve never joined a camera club as I’m not competitive and don’t want opinions on my work. Many thanks to both you Kim and Alister.

Glad you enjoyed it and could resonate Barry :)

Another cracking guest Kim. It was really interesting to hear Alister's progression with his photography. Think I might need a trip to the Gobi desert for a bit of a reset!

It certainly sounds like an incredible place Julian!

Thanks for that. I found that just getting out in any landscape had the same effect. ❤

Can relate so much to the truth spoken in this podcast. I left the camera club environment after many successful years as it became 50 photographers all trying to please a judge with their work rather than themselves. Another great podcast thank you

Wow! Thanks so much for this episode. Alister has arrived, after such a long journey, at the place that I am in my photography and I thought that I was so wrong. This was quite eye opening! I really connected with this episode. We all need a creative outlet to endure life's difficulties.

I have followed Alister on KZbin for a couple years now and have always found him very interesting to listen to so it was no surprise to me that I would enjoy this podcast. In the learning process, allowing myself to take photos of what I find to be cool might cause me to punish myself for lack of discipline. 🤣 In reality however, I think its absolutely true that a balance is needed between going with what you are feeling and paying mind to basic concepts. The more skills you gain, the more free you can allow yourself to be. Kim, I wonder if you planned to have Simon Booth on your podcast in the future. I always find his style to be so unique. I don't think there is a time when I am out with my camera and struggling to find compositions where I am not reminded of Simon and start looking at the forest floor. His ability to take seemingly mundane things like dead leaves and turn them into beautiful art is inspiring.

I enjoyed this one, a double whammy on the Scottish accent!

As Alister and I must be very close in age, and our journey somewhat similar but that I still have my Finance job, oh and remove any formal photography training, I can relate to so much of what he expressed. Fortunate, for sure. Thanks for this Kim. Cheers from Texas.

Great podcast Kim, I tried in the beginning to copy styles but soon found out, my joy is taking shots that catch my eye, and pleasing my self, not trying to please others. Thanks for this podcast.

Kim - you and Alister seem to have a subliminal connection - it expresses itself in the way your top and his background are so similar.😀

HAHA! I hadn't realised the top and background similarity. Thank you!
