In this episode I crew on @keeldragger from Ensenada B.C., Mexico to San Pedro, CA. We stop at the Customs and Border Patrol in San Diego before we push on to Avalon on Catalina Island. Like my other videos, I bring you along for the ride to see how it all goes. Welcome aboard!

Great video Andy, brings back memories of the same sail I did from Puerto Vallarta to Cabo to Ensenada to Marina Del Rey. Of course, all against the wind and tide and almost all motoring. We stopped in Avalon as well, a very charming place. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. That sounds like a fun trip. I want to sail to more parts of Mexico but that dreaded motor upwind all the way home makes me think twice.

Thanks Andy, I'm subscribed to a squillion sailing channels, many of which I now just pass on, but yours is one of the half dozen or so I look forward to, everyman sailing. No drama etc etc. There are a lot more people out there doing what you're doing. I'm sure one day you'll probably venture further afield but if you don't, you can just do what you want to. The thing is, you're getting your boat set up as you want and experience with longer trips. Stay safe and cheers from Oz.

Thank you John. Much appreciated! Yeah I’m the same as you; subscribed to a bunch of channels that I don’t watch anymore because they turned me off in some way. I just like bringing y’all along for the ride for a day out on the water. We don’t have to have a big drama scene just to make a video 😂. Yeah, I’ll venture further and further eventually but I’m not in a rush. Thanks for watching and fair winds! - Andy

Epic return from Ensenada with great krew! I'm ready to head back back down to Mexico. BTW - no concerns over the explosive dumping areas. They are in deeep water. I'm sure the US warship was hailing us about exercises in the area. I wonder if it was related to the panga chase we saw a little later.

Thanks for letting me tag along! I want to go TO Mexico next time if there’s a spot for me. I think you’re right about the exercise area and the warship.

It's always nice to have friends like Mark. That said, Mark is lucky to have a good crew like you guys who are unafraid to leave the cockpit and do what's required to be done... without complaining! Great video of a pretty awesome journey... BTW: What was up with the VHF?!
@sailingsole

Thanks Kyle. It’s symbiotic. Mark is always willing to have us go with him if we ever ask and it’s always a good time. He adventures more than anyone else that I know in SoCal. I like volunteering for anything that needs to be fixed or handled. I always learn something so I’m down. Mark / @keeldragger is gonna have to chime in on the VHF because I’m not sure…

Can't give enough props to Andy, David, and Trevor - great crew, all around good dudes, and great sailors. I'm flummoxed by the VHF. I changed a connector cable (prior to re-rig) and also re-soldered one of the connectors. I have a better signal than before, but still not where I think it should be.

@@sailingsole No, I do not know Trevor. We owned Shearwater from 11/2015 to 06/2020. She is hull number 4 and from what I understood was built as the demo boat for the LB Boat Show back in ‘75 or ‘76. She is also apparently the cover girl on the original Islander Freeport 41 brochure (she used to be brown and orange).

I know Mark has been going back and forth with Keeldragger to Ensenada. I know the TIP is good for 10 years. My question is, does he have to take boat there before the TIP expires, or can he renew in the States? I have only been there and canceled the TIP when I departed.
@sailingsole

I’m not sure. Maybe Mark / @keeldragger can chime in on this? I need to learn more about how all that works.

@@maritimetees2315 Worst case scenario is to have an existing TIP which was never cancelled by the prior owner. If there never has been a TIP or if your TIP just expired, (in your name) simply get a new one next time you are in Ensenada. No problemo. Otherwise, there is a MX site where you can get one online, but I believe you still have to stop by the Banjercito in MX to finalize it (not positive on this last part).

wtf ? who dumping explosives in a beautiful ocean ? must be illegal?

It’s labeled that way on the charts. Who knows how often they use it for dumping. Could be a legacy exercise area, who knows.

Before the EPA was created (1970), CA state water regulators and the US DoD approved 14 deep water dumping sites in the SoCal Bight. The most infamous is a site mapped by Scripps that found thousands of barrels of DDT about halfway between PV and Avalon at around 500 fathoms. For a map of the 14 dump sites, see www.epa.gov/ocean-dumping/southern-california-ocean-disposal-site-2-investigation

Take a look at NOAA Chart 18740. There are several explosive dumping areas but there run depths of 3000+ feet. Of more concern are the chemical munitions dumping areas - there is one south of Santa Cruz Island, but it is around 6000 ft depth. The biggest concern are the 55 gal drums contaminated with dioxin between LA and Catalina Island.
