ventured with the 3018 pcb milling from uv and photoresist/toner transfer methods to simplify prototyping. the allure of having the completed pcb already drilled in under 30 minutes after finishing it in kicad was just so irresistible. just like in the WEGSTR videos. but alas, decent repeatable pcbs are unobtainable with all of the current cheap 3018s as is. breaking a lot of the free V bits in the process. even tried going the laser and spray paint pathway which imho made the process long and cumbersome again defeating its purpose in the first place. with significant tinkering, eventually made the 3018 achieved the above goals with trace size limited only by the 0.1mm tip of a 15 degree V bit. just make the machine sturdy enough to eliminate any play of the bit and backlash of the leadscrews. on my machine achieved it by adding more leadscrew nut on the x and y, changing the z gantry to accommodate more of the 12cm round rails, taking off the load on the leadscrews from the stepper motors on all axis, add the 3040 conversion kit to maintain the working area, and even taking off the stock spindle fan. only the stock z gantry was removed and not reused in the upgrade. no need for the expensive upgrades like ballscrews, linear rails, and bigger spindle motors. although trying to add at present close loop control on the steppers for more accuracy.

Thanks! Yep, the laser turned out to be the real star with this cheap CNC setup. I still plan to improve the milling capability for mine, but for just making PCB's like this, it works good enough as-is.

It's a good idea, but there are a couple of problems doing it in that order. First is, l am doing a couple of resin layers after etching, and that would get into the holes. The other problem is the resin based resist, while robust, it is still brittle and can flake off near the edge when drilling, messing up the etch. Actually what I want to do, is to etch the holes in the pads to help make the drilling more accurate and clean, as this is what I always did 25 years ago when I hand drilled my boards. But so far I have not been able to get KiCad and Flexcam to do this.. But I plan to try again! Thanks for your comment ;-)

Hey man. I was wondering. How do you feel about op amps. I'm sick of every person cramming the same bs down our throats assuming they are a pandoras box or something. I've been want to do a project with them that doesn't involve synth music

Op-Amps are not as much of a thing now the world has gone mostly digital for signals, 80% of my projects in the 90's contained at least 1 Op-Amp, but I rarely need to use one now. There are still some important places where they can be used however, such as pre-amplification of linear sensor signals. Modern Op-Amps have also greatly improved compared to the days of the venerable LM741. Specifically, the output signal can now be very close to the extremes of the supply rails, this makes them super easy to work with. Of course Op-Amps remain the go to place for differential signal processing or as a high speed comparator, but typically that is going to be a pretty special circumstance. Even audio applications seems to have less and less need for standalone Op-Amps, often there is a Op-Amps functionality already built-in to special functions chips you buy. So maybe it's not the death of the standalone Op-Amp yet, but I think it is going to be rarer and rarer that we actually use them in our projects.

@ForOurGood I agree but I'm still learning so I've been gobbling as much info about them as possible. Alot of arduino sensors use them to bump up the voltage for giving better readings I've noticed.

I am building a small CNC machine and was thinking of making my PCB's the exact same way. Good to know it is possible. Which laser are you using?

Nice work man. I have one of these but not had chance to use it. I did make a video on upgrading the spindle motor. If your praying for death perhaps watch it instead!
