●About this temple
Senyu-ji Temple, affectionately known as "Osare-san," is a temple built by the national governor, Ochi no Morioki, at the behest of Emperor Tenji. This temple, nicknamed ``Osare-san,'' is located approximately 300 meters above sea level, and there is a legend that a dragon woman rose from the sea and carved the principal image, the Senju Kanzeon. It traveled along the Ryuto River to Mt. Sakurei, but it took several days to complete the statue because it was worshiped three times for each carved sword, but once the Kannon statue was completed, it returned to the sea along the Ryuto River. After that, on the 9th day of the 7th month in the lunar calendar, a dragon lantern climbed up the Ryuto River and came to Mt. Sakurei, and it is said that it hung on the cherry blossom tree of Senyuji Temple until 718. For 40 years, the hermit Abou spent his days reciting sutras and preparing the various halls, but one day, the hermit suddenly disappeared, hence the name Senyuji.
●Point to watch around
•88 Places of Sand Steps - In one corner of the shrine grounds, a statue of Daishi stands quietly. Surrounding it are stone Buddha statues representing the principal image of the 88 Sacred Sites.

第５８番札所　仙遊寺　
●寺の歴史/縁起
「おされさん」の愛称で親しまれる仙遊寺は、天智天皇の勅願により国守･越智守興公が堂宇を建立した仙遊寺。「おされさん」の愛称があるこの寺は海抜約300mのところにある寺だが、海から上がってきた竜女が本尊の千手観世音を彫り上げたという伝説が残っている竜女は海から竜登川を伝って作礼山にやってきたが、一刀刻むごとに三度礼拝していたため、完成には幾日も要したが、観音像ができあがると、竜登川を伝って再び海へと帰って行ったとかその後旧暦7月9日になると、決まったように竜燈が竜登川を登って作礼山にやってきて、仙遊寺の桜の木にかかっていたという養老2年(718)までの40年間、阿坊(あぼう)仙人がここで読経三味の日々を送り諸堂を整えたしかし仙人はある日突然姿を消してしまったこのことから仙遊寺という名がついたという
●見どころ
•八十八ヶ所御砂踏ー境内の片隅には、大師像がひっそりとたたずんでいます。その周りには、八十八ヶ所霊場の御本尊様の石仏が囲んでいます。
