@- Dread - He's talking about the 2D Mario games. But if you want my opinion on the Mario & Luigi series, well here it is -Super Star Saga: Vast open world with tons of exploration, awesome attacks, and mini games. Plus the story is pretty good -Partners In Time: Good story, but the levels felt very linear. Not to mention that I hate having to carry the baby bros around (such a chore) -Bowser's Inside Story: WOW!!! This game is awesome!!! Basically, it's the Crash Twinsanity of the Mario games -Dream Team: I never played it, BUT I like the concept of exploring Luigi's Dreams. My only nit pick would have to be the graphics. Yes I know graphics don't make a better game but COME ON! Why does every character look like they belong in Sesame Street??? Why not keep the 2D pixelated graphics? The 2D pixelated graphics gave me that Saturday morning cartoon vibe -Paper Jam: Again never played it. All I have is nit picks. No Paper Luigi to keep things even and the return of the kiddie Sesame Street graphics -Super Star Saga remaster: OH GOD NO!!! Not the Sesame Street graphics, NOOOO!!! Anything but that!!!!

I remember climbing onto my older brother's bed the first time he played ML2.... watching him play over his shoulder, and making him turn the screen so I could see too, I think we both lost our minds at how awesome everything was. The new power ups, music, pan outs of the map and filling in the coins on the door... so many good memories 😍😍 I've played through a few times throughout the years.. and seriously considering replaying both after watching this. Great review! Glad to see the broad and specific points you chose to talk about. It's obvious you put thought into you're scripts.. I thumbed up the vid as soon as you mentioned the brief power up music in ML1 👍👍

I gotta say, while the first Mario Land was by NO MEANS the first Mario game I owned, it was actually the first one I beat, and something about that gave me a spark to go beat the other games I own, so..... I kinda owe that game. lol I actually have the 3DS versions, but while I was in college, I found actual carts for the game for $10 total at a game store just a few blocks from my apartment. So much love for these games, and the fact they created Wario, cause Warioland 4 was my life, and I only have that cause of Six Golden Coins, and the third game being a straight up Wario game. They're still painfully short, but at the same time... I think that's part of why they're good. Short and fun is still a LOT better than long and crap.

Oh. I thought it was the Advance trilogy. I don't really think of Adventure 1, 2 and Heroes as a trilogy, probably because Heroes is part of a different gaming generation, but I can see why others think it is. Graphically, the comparison between SML1 and 2 makes me feel like they belong to two entirely different generations of handheld consoles. The gap is just that much impressing. It really shows how much better they grasped the system, its strength and limitations (and how to work around the latter) when developping SML2. SML1, in comparison, feels like they just didn't know yet what were the exact limits of the GB in terms of definition, "readability" and contrast, and went with a very conservative route, whether they were much bolder with SML2.

@shanamoens8226 жыл бұрын
Aah two of the few games I actually completely finished XD Two great games at that. These were my introduction to the Mario franchise so they hold a special place in my heart. And when someone asks me to hum the Mario theme I really have to first take a few moments to remember it because otherwise I'd hum one of these two. Those giant ass spiders freaked me out as a kid. I have an extreme case of arachnophobia. Now I am shocked I was ever scared of those sprites though lol. But I remember that it felt immensely satisfying to kill them in the game! I really really one day want to see a full 6 coins remake. (expanded on of course otherwise it'd be pretty short) Anyone other than us retro game enthusiasts know this game and the unique direction it took so for the younger generations a story like this could be really refreshing. Bowser for once not being the big bad in the modern platforming games and people getting to see where Wario came from. I don't know if it was Wario's debut but for me personally it was a very defining moment for my perception of the character. These days most people only know Wario from the Mario Kart, Sports and Party games and his own Wario Ware (which I love don't get me wrong) games. Of course, like with Sunshine, it could have the wrong (and undeserved imo) result with a lot of people hating it for its refreshing feeling... sigh

I've always loved Super Mario Land 2, I grew up with that game, Link's Awakening, Tetris Attack and some others for the OG Gameboy. They feel like hidden gems now because the "Land" series really did some original stuff that hasn't been replicated before and it hasn't been given new exposure, but if you had an original GB then you had this game and Link's Awakening (as well as Tetris). I wish some of the design of SML2 was re-used again or reworked into new whacky mechanics, I remember the gooey ceiling level and the lego level. I loved the fact it was technically "open" to explore the level you wanted.

While I appreciate the joke about the Wii U launch, I feel like it's sort of hollow. The joke is that the Wii U had a weak launch compared to prior Nintendo consoles. So let's look at that, real quick. The Wii U launched on 18 November 2012 in NA with 36 games. Ignoring ports, sports, and fluff, we have Assassin's Creed III and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 as AAA third-party launch titles, Darksiders II as a quasi-AAA not-quite-a-port launch title (it released a few months prior to the WiiU), and New Super Mario Bros U as the big AAA first-party launch title. It subsequently released in EU on 30 November 2012 and JP on 8 December 2012, with neither launch adding any major new titles. So that's 3 major launch titles. Now let's work backwards. The Wii launched on 19 November 2006 in NA with 21 games. It's big third-party AAA releases were Call of Duty 3 and Red Steel, with honorable mentions to DBZ: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz (that's right, circa 2006 I no longer consider Sega a AAA developer). It's main first-party release is...Wii Sports, because TLoZ: Twilight Princess is essentially a GameCube port, even if it was technically available on the Wii first. It subsequently released in JP on 2 December 2006 and EU on 8 December 2006, with neither launch including any other noteworthy games. So that's like 4 major launch titles, maybe 5. The GameCube launched on 14 September 2001 in JP with 3 games. Not 30-something; 3 games: Luigi's Mansion, Super Monkey Ball, and a jet ski racing game. So that's one AAA first-party game, and one AAA third-party game. Two months later, it launched in NA (18 November 2001), now with 12 games. Adding to the previous lineup, the only new game of note is Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II. That is to say, we've added one more AAA third-party game. The EU launch in 3 May 2002, nearly a year later, doesn't add anything of particular note. So we're looking at 2 solid launch titles, with a third joining shortly thereafter. The Nintendo 64 launched on 23 June 1996 in JP with 3 games. Again, that's not a typo folks. It had Super Mario 64 as the first-party AAA release, Pilotwings 64 as a quasi-AAA sort-of first-party game, and a shogi game. The NA launch on 29 September 1996, three months later, had 2 games, because there were no new titles, but the shogi game wasn't localized. It wasn't until the EU launch on 1 March 1997, nearly an entire year later, that the system launched 6 games. Aside from Mario and Pilotwings, we now had two sports games (association football and hockey), a mediocre Star Wars game in Shadows of the Empire, and Turok the Dinosaur Hunter. Shadows of the Empire can probably be considered AAA, but I don't think the original Turok really qualifies, it being developer Iguana Studios' first notable game. So that's 1 solid launch title, arguably followed by a second nearly a year later. The Super Famicon launched on 21 November 1990 in JP with 2 games: F-Zero and Super Mario World. Since I've not counted the myriad racing games as major launch titles, I feel it unfair to count F-Zero here, but I'ma be generous and do it anyway. By the time the SNES made it to NA on 19 August 1991, almost a year later, the only additions were Pilotwings, Gradius III (a ported arcade game), and SimCity (also a port). The EU launch on 11 April 1992, now nearly 2 years later, lacked all of the games added during the NA launch, and instead added Super Tennis. So that's 2 solid launch titles, if I'm being generous. The Famicon launched 15 July 1983 in JP with 3 games: Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr, and Popeye. The former two are arcade ports, and Popeye is a cartoon cash-in. That's right, Super Mario Bros was NOT a launch title for the Famicon. It wouldn't be released until shortly before the NA launch, which occured on 18 October 1985, over TWO YEARS later, and included such classics as Duck Hunt, Excitebike, and the aforementioned Super Mario Bros. So that's...effectively 1 solid launch title, if I'm generous (since both DK and DKJ were just arcade ports), with most of the classic games following YEARS later. The pattern? Nintendo launches have ALWAYS been small, and have only grown in diversity with time. Everyone talks about how light the WiiU or Switch launches were, but no one seems to remember that almost every Nintendo system has launched with a single heavily polished first party title that carries the system long enough to get other games out. The NES had Super Mario (by the time it launched in NA), the SNES had Super Mario World, the N64 had Super Mario 64, the GameCube had Luigi's Mansion, the Wii had TLoZ: Twilight Princess (I guess), the WiiU had New Super Mario Bros U, and the Switch had TLoZ: Breath of the Wild (my understanding is that, despite releasing for WiiU, this was native developed for Switch and backported). And all that because you made a silly MLG airhorn joke about the WiiU's launch lineup.

I'd be interested in what you think of the Donkey Kong remake/remaster for Game Boy. Sure, the actual remake part is only a small portion of the new game, but, it would fit as a regular game review, too. The way Mario plays in that is interesting.

I'm not sure if you know this, but if you beat Super Mario Land 1 and go back to the title screen after the credits, you can play through the game again, but it'll be harder. After that, you unlock a level select.

SML2 is kinda long for a Game Boy game. I do personally consider Kirby's Dream Land 2 the best game on the Game Boy.

Never thought about this, until you brought it up. SML1 does have great music. nice vid. You hit everything right on SML2 review. Been playing a lot of Super Gameboy recently. I got 1, but don't have 2 anymore. Want it again. New sub! I got a gaming channel too, but haven't done much at all recently :/

Here's a tip for Mario Land 2. Its the only 2-D Mario game (that i'm aware of) that lets you perform a higher jump by holding up on the D-pad. The carrot item gives you this super jump as a default.

For Land 2, I can't stop hearing she's gone to heaven, so I've got to be good during the main musical hook. Am I alone in that?

I absolutely LOVE SML2: 6 Golden Coins.. BUT *you can NOT tell me that game over screen isnt UNBEARABLY creepy and eerie when all of your golden coins get taken away.*

Nitpick: There's no article in Super Mario Land 2's subtitle. And the Koopa Troopas in Land 1 are called Bombshell Koopas or Nokobons. Also, was the first part of your narration recorded in a well?
