Just thought I'd leave some info here in the comments in case others are inspired to get into wildlife photography. Smaller sensor cameras especially from Olympus/OM System and Lumix give essentially an in-camera 2x "crop" to your image which means you can use much smaller and cheaper lenses to get the same zoom amount as a full frame camera like ER is using here. You don't need multiple thousands of dollars to start this fun hobby! It's a blast no matter what your budget and skill level are!

That's actually funny you were able to catch that Eagle chasing the Osprey for a fish. I was reading an article about the differences between the two species and this was mentioned about Eagles: "Bald eagles love fish as well, and sometimes rather than doing their own hunting they will harass osprey, making them drop their fish or even steal their fish right out of their talons." Awesome to be able to see it and capture it on film.
@modernoto102 жыл бұрын
It's actually one of the reasons Ben Franklin did not want to use a bald eagle as the national symbol: "For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him."

I’m from juneau alaska (I now live in Texas), it’s a relatively small capital but we have all sorts of animals like whales, bear black and brown, mountain goats, deer, bald eagles, squirrels, small birds, ravens, crows, salmon and plenty of trails. Juneau is right next to the tungass national forest which is about the size of Maryland. Photography wise it’s a great place but the weather isn’t always sunny but we do have the glacier which also has a massive waterfall

As an avid birder, I have answered some of your questions/doubts about some of the birds in this video: Bald Eagle vs Osprey: Bald eagles are known to steal fish from osprey rather than catching their own fish sometimes. Bald Eagles Quarreling: Female Bald eagles are larger than males. Also, juveniles are born with black feathers and it takes about 5-6 years for them to grow into the adult eagle plumage (white head and tail). Lastly, it takes a while for juvenile eagles to learn how to hunt for fish, so they spend their early years stealing fish from other bald eagles. What’s even more fascinating is that parents while train their young to steal fish from the adults before the young permanently leave the nest. Barn Swallows: Your suspicions about the barn swallows nesting under the boardwalk are most likely correct! Barn swallows build thick mud nests with their sticky spit under bridges and boardwalks near bodies of water. Black-Necked Stilt Shorebird: These birds eat a range of prey in the wetlands: aquatic invertebrates, small crustaceans, amphibians, snails, and tiny fish. Blue Jay: Female and male blue jays look virtually the same. Bird’s eyes are fixed in their sockets, meaning they cannot move their eyes around without turning in the direction of the object they want to see like we can. Canadian Geese & Ducklings: Canadian geese chicks are actually called goslings, which are different from duckings that come from mallards! Also the crocodiles head is something I never noticed, but now I can’t unsee it now haha. Common Yellowthroat: This bird is one of many warblers: warblers are a group of birds only found in North America that commonly migrate from Central and South America to the United States in the summer. Warblers are insectivores, meaning their diet mainly consists of insects. I would like to say that these are great common Yellowthroat photos! They often hide in the brush near bodies of water, so they are very hard to photograph. You definitely got very lucky! Cormorants: Cormorants do dive in order to chase and catch fish. Immature cormorants are usually paler in color, so you might have seen a parent and it’s chick. The reason cormorants are different from ducks is that they can dive underwater since they lack waterproofing oil on their feathers. This waterproofing oil is what allows ducks to float on top of the water. That is why you often see cormorants drying their wings after swimming, because they cannot fly with very wet wings. Great Blue Heron: Birds do not possess teeth, so they swallow most of their food whole. Instead, they have very strong stomach acid that digests their food items. Osprey Catches Fish: Unlike cormorants and bald eagles, osprey have waterproofing oil on their feathers, so they can land and take off from water. If you don’t have it already, I recommend downloading the app “Merlin” on the AppStore. It is a bird identification app created by the Cornell lab of ornithology and it’s free. The most helpful feature is that it allows you to submit a photo of a bird and it will identify it for you!
@chanterelle4832 жыл бұрын
Birds have two stomachs. The first one is muscular and it grinds the food (sometimes birds even swallow stones to make that more effective), while the second one contains digestive acid. Just thought I add it up here. On another note, the bluee egret looked strikingly similar to a snake when it was swallowing the fish. They are truly closely related. I am very thankful to ER for showing us this awesome thing.
