I think it's quite impressive that the game can handle so many individual units runnin around, to be fair I am used to older games which have bad optimization

Well, it really depends. I have I7-8700 3.2 GHz processor, GeForce 1070 GTX Ti and 16 GiB ram and my PC definitely can't handle this many units. In sieges with 700+ units I'm around 40 fps and in open battles with a lot of horses it really goes down to like 20 fps. Only when they are moving tho, so there is definitely problem in animation optimization. Usually I ran the game 100+ fps tho, which is nice. Only large battles and sieges are kind of lacking.
