I think it would be awesome to go to a location like this, it makes me think of all the cool space stuff I used to look at growing up. Seeing the Earth from this spot would make me feel so insignificant and small! If you could go here, what would be the coolest thing for you?

Another reason for the raised walkway, would be to prevent the spread of lunar dust from all the walking turists. That is relevant since some disturbance of the lunar soil would happen when the turist spot were constructed. Great diorama!

I once was part of a team at a sand-sculpting competition on the 25th anniversary of the lunar landing. We had to fill a 30’ square, but had a small team, so we came up with the idea of sculpting a lunar rover, except with big fat slicks for rear tires, shooting up a huge rooster tail of moon dust. The rover was life size and had two astronauts on it. The rest of the area we sculpted into craters of various sizes. And our team leader had made some plywood flip flops with the slotted patted of the moon boots on the bottom, and he ran all over the site leaving boot prints. Our sculpture was titled, “The Eagle has Sanded, Astronaut what your country can do for you”. We won the competition. The judge said that it was partly because of the timeliness of the subject matter, but that it was the footprints that REALLY pushed us over the top with the judges.

@@CosmicQuestHobbies You are more than welcome! I think the biggest problem making a diorama like this is the sheer size of what constitutes the landing site. I've been thinking about my project for about a decade, now. My current plan is to use a 1/144th scale LM (and per your project, interior exhibits like the F1 and CM displays that may be seen through the windows) and to surround the Decent Stage in an enclosed ring-shaped walkway. In any event, your project will serve as a VERY good guide. One thing I appreciate is how you depicted the US Flag blown-down, as it is (unfortunately) in real life; even though you took some artistic license in showing it in all its colors despite the likelihood that the Sun's rays likely bleached it white. I'll probably do the same. Again, great diorama!

I have come to th conclusion Sculpey is the ultimate Moon soil. I takes tiny foot prints really well. You mor or less only have to paint highlights too. It is already the right color.

@DonleecartoonsАй бұрын
I really want that to be real one day, even if I could never go there. I wouldn't worry about those first footprints, either ... the famous "first footprint" photo was taken just to judge how far the astronauts' overboots would sink into the surface, and were obliterated pretty quickly as the astros walked around. And most people think the flag would be faded to near-white by now.
@CosmicQuestHobbiesАй бұрын
@@Donleecartoons same here. I hope it'll be real too! I was really torn on making the flag still look newish or make it white and worn from all the UV radiation, etc.. I think I also figured since I made the lander still look pristine, I might as well do the same for the flag, lol. That and it makes me feel patriotic😉
@mcarp55526 күн бұрын
Lovely! I really like this. I had the Revell Moon Landing model as a kid (and watched the landing live back in '69). My only minor question is, shouldn't the tourist area be facing the front of the LM? I would think future space tourists would rather see the front of the lander instead of the back.
@CosmicQuestHobbies26 күн бұрын
Thank you for the kind words! I feel like I should send you one off my channel stickers for being to first to mention the orientation of the lander, lol. I was halfway through my diorama and thinking about the layout of the pieces when I realized that how I had everything laid out would make the lander pointing in that direction. I thought, dang it... Maybe no one will notice, lol. Thank you so much for watching and sharing the memory of watching it live!! 🚀🙂

Not to knock your efforts, I've never made a diorama, but that visitor centre is bothering my inner nerd, it's too earthly, it doesn't feel like something that would be built on the Lunar surface, as its a rectangle it would need to be reinforced as the pressure from inside and the hard vacuum outside would constantly be trying to pop it open at the corners, also the big windows, whilst a good idea on earth would need to be made of very thick UV resistant glass or even plexiglass to contend with radiation, in fact they would probably need shutters of some kind like on the observatory module on the ISS. Again it's a matter of taste, your model is otherwise fine.
@CosmicQuestHobbiesАй бұрын
No worries! I'm thinking that's nothing some good hurricane ties can't fix, lol. What's funny is that as I was reading your comment, I was picturing a disaster movie on the moon where the builders of the museum didn't listen to the engineers about the safety requirements and the tourists got trapped up there because something broke on the structure... Hmmm. Thank you for your thoughts and feedback, I truly appreciate it!

@@CosmicQuestHobbies There's a book written by Andy Weir called Artemis, Weir also wrote 'The Martian', which also has an Apollo 11 visitors centre.
