Nice car. I am in the process of restoring my 70 GTX. It is deep burnt orange. With black vinyl top. 440-4bbl. 727 automatic. 8 3/4 rear end with 3:23 gear. I bought the car in Kannapolis NC in 1981. I parked the car in 1993. It sat in my front yard for 14 years in SC. I almost sold it a time or two. The car was bought by a brother who had it a few years and sold it to his brother. He let his wife drive it until they traded it for a newer car in 81. I blew the original engine and ran a 383 for a while. I then put a Highway Patrol 76 440 in it until I parked it. Now I am back in NC and it is the GTXs turn for restoration. I have it apart. Fresh 70 440 and a 6 barrel to put on it. The 440 is built pretty good and will be over 450 hp. I have everything to restore it but the seat covers. When they arrive I hope to be painting. Looking to drive the GTX this summer🤞

Hi Lars, it was 1970. I was 20 years old and looking to buy my first car. I'm in downtown Philly. I see this 69 GTX, and I hear the rumble of the tuned pipes I was in love😍 I went to the dealership an ordered a 1970 440 in the color high-performance green which is the lime green a friend of mine had a Super Bee which was no match for the 440. I let a friend hold it who had just gotten home from Vietnam he totaled it .I sold it for the motor, and I was heartbroken lesson learned. Don't let friends drive your car if it's a special one. Good luck with yours.

I got into street racing late, thanks to the gas crisis of the early '70s, it was too late to buy a street machine new. But it was a good time to buy them used! They were plentiful, so were the muscle car parts. I had 3 GTXs all at once: a '70 with a 440- 6, a '69 with a 426 Hemi & another '69 that I bought as a body-only, to put a 426 wedge in. I got my share of tickets, but I had a lot of fun! Good Luck with your project GTX!

I had one of these 70 GTX 440×6 4 speed Dayna 60 410 rear. Had the Air Grabber hood too. It was fast as hell especially for a big heavy car. Once I hit the gas just before getting the car totally strait. It did a complete 360 baking the tires by the time I could lift off the gas push the clutch in. I made money betting I could pull out in 4th gear. You could rev the motor to around 2k and feather the clutch and pull out like an automatic even with 5 people and a keg in the trunk. (Sure it didn't do the 11" clutch any favors). I sold the body in the 90s. I stored the motor/trans 40 years. Just freshened them up and they are going in my 72 Challenger this week.

I love all the cars from the 60's through the 70's. It's too bad that I am 47 and I have nothing in my life and I have to start from the bottom. Wow, I could see from the video it's a really deserving find. I've been building Mopars for nearly 8 years, pretty much every day. Until then, nothing but Chevys. The aftermarket industry was just getting going on the Mopars back then, but it's doing better. I'd still rather do Chevys probably 2:1,but I get to work on them as I'm able so it's interesting.

And yes, if you find a Mopar or any unibody car sitting in a leaky old pole barn beware of the unibody construction. Not just Mopars, anything that's unibody. Sometimes cars are in better shape just sitting in the weather with the windows down. At least it can dry out. In damp old structures the moisture is trapped and it keeps rust working continuously. I had the pleasure of building a Cuda a few years back and it wound up costing the customer way more than it will ever be worth. But it is a beautiful car at the moment. It gave me something to do for a solid three year's.

Here is some trivia. The glove box doors were hard plastic on the 70's but a luxurious soft cushioned vinyl on the 69's (and probably the 68's ). Also, the front suspension has a different sway bar and handles a bit better in the 70 and newer.

It's likely a safe bet that the engine that was "dropped in" is not the original. Note the air conditioning compressor, but the lack of a/c outlets in the dashboard. If it's an RB engine (raised block 440, 426W or 413), the year code (F for 1970), displacement and if it's an HP engine with be stamped on a pad located under the a/c compressor. The original engine would have been the HP version rated at 375 hp. A 350 hp version was also made for the full size C bodies. The blocks were the same, but the cam was milder. The heads may have smaller valves, but that is unclear in 1970 models. To the best of my knowledge, the numbers that match the engine to the VIN number are located at top of the block near the oil pressure sender, but don't quote me on that.
@sparent9922
@sparent9922 Жыл бұрын
I will not quote you but you are absolutely correct. It's definitely not an ac car from the factory and I think more than likely someone pulled an engine out of a Chrysler Windsor or a Plymouth Fury or Dodge Polara and shot some paint on it, swapped the carb and stuck it on the motor mounts and ran out of steam or their lack of knowledge and/or money caused it to sit rather than be beaten to shit by a leafless tree mechanic which is worse than a shade tree mechanic
@Americana777
@Americana777 Жыл бұрын
Good eyeball you are probably right
@robertdys978
@robertdys978 Жыл бұрын
That's not the original motor. You are correct. I always said a 440 is a 440. Only slight variation between them were the HP cam but it was negligible and they were usually immediately replaced with the MP 509 anyhow. The only REAL good 440 was the 1977 440 HP police interceptor motor It had a higher nickel content block and factory moly rings. I'd pick those up for $50 all day long. They never needed rebored.

Mopars you had the Plymouth satellite, a Plymouth roadrunner, or a Plymouth GTX. There were no Plymouth GTX satellites not to my knowledge. The bodies were pretty much the same between the satellite roadrunners and GTX the difference was the powertrain and such. Most likely this was somebody that rebuilt this car and put the wrong badges on it to make it a clone. I've seen it done before. My dream car is a 1971 Plymouth roadrunner or even better the GTX.

If you had a car like that you would have to buy Turbo Blue race fuel at $10 a gallon and 6 miles to the gallon. It would look nice sitting in the garage but you couldn't afford to drive it more than a couple of days a year. For the same money you can buy a used Hell Cat or Charger and have the same performance and access to replacement parts from the dealership.

@@Americana777 you won't own a 426 Hemi for very long running ethanol based gasoline. The valves will beat the seats down into the heads, and it would sit there and diesel and it would blow up. Those engines call for Sunoco leaded 99 octane fuel - minimum, with a can of 104 + octane booster.

Gtx was the top of the line. RoadRunner was middle class. Satellite was the poor mans GTX. Sadly the GTX moniker lasted only 5 years. 67-71 At least we had the RoadRunner until 74-75 after that it was just a decal package applied to the Aspen/ Aspen R/T RoadRunner 77-78 Rare package though. Unlike its ancestors it had no six pack or Hemi. Maybe a fire breathing 360 4bbl although smog equipment present due to OPEC and Big Brother killed the Hemi and the 440 six bbl.. Now here it is again. Shale sale is dying and Dodge is killing the Challenger again. Deja vu is a real experience. Camaro is going away and the beloved Mustang is slated to be slaughtered in 28' No more "Muscle Cars". The end of an era is at hand again!

If you ordered a roadrunner from '72 to 74 with a 440 4 bbl you got the GTX trim packages which included upgraded seats covers , chrome belt line moldings three GTX badges , chrome wheel opening moldings , and if you ordered it with a 4 speed you got the Dana 60 with 3:54 gear ratio which was only available for the '72 model year '73 and '74 were only available with 8 3/4 with automatic transmission with the GTX package 👍

If id of only known when I was a teenager what we all know now I had a numbers matched 6 pack 70 in 1989 I pounded the shit outta that car.Then when I decided it was going to kill me I sold her for 750 bucks interior was hardly worn the rear quarters had a tiny bit of rot as I lived in western Massachusetts otherwise the car was like new with I think 80 plus thousand miles can't remember exactly but I want to cry seeing what these go for today scream out loud .I had the car for barely a year paid 2000 never will we see those days again 😢

That's not the factory motor. Looks to be an early B body one though. If it was a C body motor it'd be Mopar teal.

Video made no sense. So what? You found a old junk GTX. And the dreamers that wants a six pack. The 3 two barrels is not like bolting a Holley Seven Fifty double pumper on a engine. My cousin who died last week. A Vietnam War LRRP that came home with a pocket full of money. Bought one new in 1970. Said it was the best car he ever owned. Tore the engine down, all new hi performance parts. Balanced and Blue Printed. Said he only owned it 6 months. Said his wife couldn't drive it Said the clutch pedal was stiff. The steering was sloppy. She couldn't drive it and tend her baby in the front seat. Had to sell it and buy a regular car. Said he had gauges he built just for setting up the 6 pack carbs. The 440 was a lot of weight over the front wheels. All those old Dodge cars were junk. Lots of horsepower but they didn't handle worth a darn. Great for drag racing in a straight line. But that was it.
