Manirathnam wants his hero to look realistic. He will never take a movie where an old man been made to appear like a young man, using over make-up and CG. That is the reason why Rajini can't work with him anymore. Rajini was a good friend of GV. GV used to say that Nayagan could have also been made with Rajini as hero, but the story will be slightly different. Then, they decided to do Thalapathi, which was just another version of Nayagan. When it was released, mostly in Tamil Nadu, people thought that Mammooty out performed Rajini. However, in Kerala, people thought Rajini acted far better than Mammooty. I know this because I am a malayalee Rajini fanatic who grew up in Chennai. When a big director makes a movie with a big actor, he should show the actor in a new angle. That was what Mani did and hats off to him. He was not like Bharathiraja who made an absolute garbage movie when he joined with the superstar in Kodi parakkudhu(mudi kooda parakkala). By the way, Mouna raagam was not a musical hit. The movie became a huge hit because of the direction and how Karthik's charector was done and how he acted so well. The story line was also great, even though it said the same thing what Andha 7 naatkal said.

Rajini assessment i disagree..Thalapathy was a marriage of equals. Where is suresh krishna, ks ravikumar, p. Vasu now...where is Maniratnam now? #Rajinikanth and #Maniratnam should combine to give us soon another Cult Classic ! Ps - rather than a good director, Mani is a good leader, allowing technicians like ilayaraja, ARR to shine...in movies like katru veliyidai all technicians were great but we are looking where is Director...
