one needs to spend time in CR, and figure out how to get around "gringo pricing"

As time goes on I get more and more tired of the concept of "gringo pricing" as it's portrayed and discussed online. First of all, in every country on Earth, there are contractors and vendors who will sell their goods and services at higher prices to anyone they think they can take advantage of - this isn't unique to Costa Rica whatsoever, and it's basically a principle of every free market transaction on the planet. If the seller is a person who wants to try and get the most out of someone who doesn't know better, they'll do it whether they're a plumber in the U.S. or a Costa Rican salesperson selling to an expat... In my time in CR, of course I've seen circumstances where foreigners are getting taken advantage of and I've seen countless examples of foreigners who really don't know any better getting angry about prices or bills or customs that they'll attribute to the "gringo pricing" that everyone complains about, rather than realizing the real problem, which is usually their lack of language skills or knowledge of the culture, prices etc. So very often people end up with their "elbows out," aggressively questioning a Tico restaurant owner about charges on their bill that are standard, or arguing with a service provider about their fees after a job is done, when they couldn't clearly understand the fees to begin with...

@@CostaRicaMatt It was on Omatepe when I had a friend who made his living acting as a go-between ex-pats and natives that I really got to understand. I managed to get by without being robbed too badly, but I was never in a hurry, and always just outwaited them. and I know how things work, I made my living flipping houses and writing mortgages. I am not talking about silly first-time tourist stuff.
