Without a doubt, the DC-3 makes the list of the top 10 best aircraft ever designed, built, and flown. I count myself fortunate to have been a passenger in these birds, numerous times, back in the 1950's and 1960's. Boston to Keene, N.H., and back, and Salt Lake to Elko, and back. Great footage of this beach landing.

The old DC-3 is such a pretty airplane! The geometry is just perfect. It was the first plane I ever flew on, back in 1956. I took a scheduled hop from Carlsbad, N.M. to El Paso, TX. Quite an adventure for a youngster.

It's amazing to see these planes that are getting on a bit now still doing the flying they were designed for. A truly amazing aircraft. I wish I had been on board, it looks an exciting trip. Only question I have is why they were landing on a beach in the first place? I can only think that they were running a supply run to the Lodge that was mentioned? Anyway, well done that pilot, an very gentle touch down, he has done it before, but how things will change with a bit of water around. Nice video, I would have loved to have seen it touch down on the day.

@@thomastucker5686 There is no question you are right. Some years ago as a filmmaker I filmed an autoration of a helicopter - the pilot said 'set it up here' and he landed on the same spot three times in a row - engine off!!!! Then we needed to film it from the air - scariest shit I have ever done. Pilot: " So engine off in 3..2..1.." and then he switched the engine off and we glided down and right at the last moment he flared the nose and we gently skidded to a stop. Pilots. Pro as F!

I would add to your description that this is an DC-3S , R4D-8, C-117D and not a DC-3. In the civilian world this is a different FAA type rating than the DC-3. Only 100 were remanufactured down the line at Long Beach in the 1950's for the USN/USMC. Different engines, different wing, double the fuel capacity, different tail, metal control surfaces, gear doors, higher gross weight, retractable tail wheel. Check the FAA registry database, very few still fly. N9796N in Honolulu is one.

I did notice two things, I thought odd. First was that the mains retracted and had doors to open and close. Last was a significantly different vertical stabilizer. It seemed taller and it was squared off on top. I've never seen one in real life. Thank you for your comment and bringing it to our attention. :-)

Super Gooney! I flew C-117Ds for the last couple of years of their service in the USMC back in 1976-1978. Great airplane that I'm glad this fighter pilot had the opportunity to fly. I led the flight of our Squadron's two "Hummers" to the boneyard (DM AFB) in October 1978 when the USMC/USN program was ended. BuNo 17420 that I flew that mission had over 78,000 hours since it was remanufactured by Douglas in 1950 when we dropped her off at DM. After being sold as surplus it continued to fly in civilian service for many years out of south Florida.

Judging by the presence of gear doors this seems to be a Super DC-3/C-117? If so, it has more powerful engines and a plug inserted between the cockpit and the wings, lengthening the fuselage and correcting the centre of gravity for the heavier engines. It would also have an extra passenger window on each side (8 instead of 7 on the standard DC-3)

We were the premier inter-island air carrier for cargo between Honolulu and the neighbor islands with a fleet of two DC-3s and five DC-6 aircraft. What a joy it was to fly in these old - no "timeless" - air machines that did their jobs day-in and day-out. You can still find these planes flying in various operations around the world!

@Hard Facts Luckily it's not your plane or anything for you to worry about. Keeping your panties in such a tight wad is going to corrode your ass.

This is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen as far as an aircraft landing… I cannot believe the aircraft had enough space to fit their massive balls in it! Pilots rock~

I read the title as 3D landing, not DC3 landing, and I'm watching and saying, this is the most amazing 3D simulation I've ever seen...DUH!
