Second update of the shop move. Phase one is 90% complete which was moving my wife's art studio to the new place. Got some video of the inside of the shop this time. Anybody out there do spray insulation? Be an official Epic Egress supporter with limited edition event specific tee. These are not the typical hipster weight tee shirts. These shirts are proper shop grade workwear. Follow the links below. Even have pocket tees this time.

Please finish insulating the entire shop before moving anything in. I didn’t and I regret it to this day. The insulation contractor would have insulated the empty building for pennyies compared to the bid I got once I had move my stuff in the way. Gorgeous shop, oh and a nice property too.. what a great adventure, what a lot of decisions, what a lot of work. You’re the man!

Tom, I see contractors screw up adding insulation to existing metal roofs too much. Be mindful of how you contractor is going to stop condensation on the underside of the metal roof panels. New metal roofs have vapor barrier backed batt insulation pinned between the metal roof panels and purlins to keep them from condensing. You need insulation that's going to keep close to the metal and imped air movement. Like spray on a thin layer of closed cell foam insulation directly onto the under side of the roof and then install what ever insulation CA Title 24 requires.

Base layer (at least) of closed cell foam is highly recommend against condensation in metal buildings.

100% agree, I paid the machinery movers to store the machines for a couple of weeks whilst I laid the mambrane on the floor, added 4x2s with insulation between them, floored in OSB and epoxy painted, battened all the walls, added insulation panels then dry-walled over it and, finally, battened the ceiling space and insulated before adding dry-wall. Took about 3 weeks to complete, but was well worth the effort to finish before the machines were moved in.

Foam is great, and I agree it needs to be done before the move-in, but AFTER the electrical, which means you will need to CAD the daylights out of the shop layout. It doesn't look like the roll-up doors are insulated, so that needs to be addressed as well. And you will want to consider some sort of fresh air replenishment system since the foam will seal the place up tight.

Thanks for the video. I with a lot of other people saying do not put stuff in the new shop, get it insulated first. If you have to rent or buy shipping containers and put all your stuff in there till the shop is finished. Working around machines is a pain, and work gets done faster and cheaper if workers do not have to deal with a shop full of stuff. Your paying people to do a job and moving machines is not the job you are paying them for. This is the same concept as doing a house reno if people are in the house job takes longer and cost more, no people in the house and there stuff is gone work gets done faster. Last thing you need is someone working in the new shop and they have to worry about breaking things, and worse still is if they do break something and now you have that pain to deal with, or you have someone that likes your stuff more then you and they take your stuff to there shop. I like you content and you having a fast and clean move means you make more content.

The best thing I did in my shop (other than insulation and A/C) was to paint the interior white. No bare drywall or cinder blocks. The paint reflects light so there are no truly dark places. It feels like a commercial office space that happens to have machines in it, instead of the dark basement I used to work in.

And it makes steel paneled buildings much stiffer and stronger too. I’m pretty sure there’s even some green foams too. But you’re going to have to read up on all the different foams if you go that route. That said, there’s some incredible spray foams out there ranging from open cell to closed cell foams. But in any case, they really do seal the building from air intrusion and make it stronger. Piece of cake to foam an empty building.

building, rebuilding, or moving shop seems to be a recurring theme for the past couple of years. however you do it, make it inviting, a spot you want to be in. if the winter weather justifies it, a heavy pot belly stove will add a lot to the atmosphere plan on a medium size tractor with a front end bucket loader, or an old backhoe, old backs and shovels are a bad mix

For every 1000 sq ft of roof you will harvest 600 gallons for every inch of rain. Man has been harvesting rain for millions of years. Only recently have we begun drilling holes in the ground and pumping water out. M2c

Congratulations on the new property Tom, it looks like a beautiful place, and the new shop will be excellent. Yes, certainly get the building insulated, and if you can, insulate the roll up doors too. I used a thin spray on coating from a company called Lizardskin. It's used in automotive applications normally, but the stuff reduced the interior surface radiated heat (AZ sun) on my door by almost 25 degrees. From experience there is one more thing I would strongly recommend before you move anything in there. I would have the concrete floor diamond ground and properly sealed. Doing this will make the whole shop easier to clean, keep the dust down, and provide an easy to clean stain resistant surface to work on going forward. All the best to you my friend, I wish I could get away for a few days and come give you a hand, but my customers are keeping my nose to the proverbial grindstone this month.

I had a rotary converter and it worked ok but very noisy, constantly turning it on and off as you need it and of coarse you have to deal with power loss in your machines. I switched to phase perfect digital phase converter 15 years ago. It is always on and makes no more noise than a desktop computer. It only results in 2% power consumption and provides better 3 phase than you get from the utility company if you can get it to your place economically. Best decision I ever made. I have no financial interest in this company. Buy all your power equipment now as your governor has just outlawed small gas and diesel engines in your state after 2024.
