I can't speak for everyone but at least for me I like your channel because of the general knowledge about whatever mechanical that you're willing to share with everyone. There are definitely channels I only watch for the machining because that is all they post but I'm confident we can all learn from pretty much whatever your willing to post. Not to mention your story of what's happening with your shop in my opinion is incredibly interesting and always helps to decide what I want to do in the future.

I fully understand your situation. I am going through the same things. I am adding another 40" container to my shop, which will double its size. I wanted to tell you about my insulation solution, to begin with I live in SW Florida, so you can easily understand my needs. I chose the 3/4" foam board insulation. Because of it's high R value and low price. Also because it is something I could do without much help (I am in a wheelchair). There are several ways of adhering this stuff to the walls of my shipping containers, the first one I used a 3M spray adhesive, but they had production problems and I couldn't get it for the second one. I found that I could get anchor pins you attach to with a good silicone, then you hold the insulation to them with simple spring washers. The installation is very easy and very quick. I run a simple 1 1/2 ton split A/C unit, and it keeps the shop dry and cool. I hope this gives you some assistance is your insulation job.

I moved a couple of years ago, and our move was complicated by the fact that instead of being able to just move in to our new house, we discovered on arriving that we needed a LOT of work done; it was over 3 months before we could live there, so lots of stuff went into storage, including quite a few of my tools. Now I have 3 of several things, because I had to buy another because the first one was in storage, and then a third when I discovered the second one had been taken to our apartment (which was pretty far from the house). But the best way to find something, if it's not too big or expensive, is to buy another one, and then put it away - almost inevitably that location is where you 'lost' the first one. What I can't understand is why it doesn't work nearly as well to pretend you got a second one.

Wiring is always fun! Kind of sounded like some lose tin on a windy day there at one point? Might need to check that everything is secure.
@2hacksinashack2 жыл бұрын
Similar thought occurred to me. I think it’s his overhead doors in the wind. I’ve got 12’ overhead doors on “the shack” and they’ll make a racket on a windy day when they’re closed. Also, I know that part of California gets pretty windy. My father in law lives an hour or so south west in San Joaquin county. We visit a couple times a year.

When you’re shoving those wires in that one conduit, are you following the National Electric Code as to how many wires of whatever amperage (or combinations) can be used in a specific sized conduit? You can fit more wires in conduits than you are allowed to put. For those who don’t know, it’s all about heat.
@markwagner74812 жыл бұрын
I've been caught out by this before. I thought I was good to go based on fill capacity, but then I did my ampacity calculations and realized it was better to run separate conduit.
@summerforever67362 жыл бұрын

Tom...i like your conduit idea of running multiple wires through it...curious if u had ever kicked around the idea of puling off 110 from one of your 220 single phase legs to power the 110 outlets?
@dreamcat42 жыл бұрын
love that metal tube conduit, it actually looks kindda beautiful to me, has it's own particular type of charm and style. but also in a functional sense you dont have to worry about mechanically damaging the cables, putting other things near to it. it armor protected! all except for sources heat of course. however maybe the metal tube does help to act as a kind of heatsink and naturally dissipate or spread out localized areas of heating along the length of the tube. really cool soution and i suppose the pipe bending is not too chalenging with any budget pipe bender? so long as the radius can be big enough to let slide / push the cables thru it afterwards? my last question is if its easier to push thru single core stiffer higher current cables, or narrower diameter more flexible (or braided multi core styles). just curious. well nevermind can always look it up elsewhere. it is its own subject and not really to so much to do with precision machining! hehe
@jonanderson51372 жыл бұрын
Solid core and emt rarely go together. Should be stranded and generally on any length of run you use a rope or pullstring. I should add that the NEC provides fill charts for how many wires can be pulled. Like many things there are intricacies involved in pulling wire from industrial KY jelly to fittings used that facilitate pulling through 90° etc.

Normally when I do a pass through like that--- I will take your larger wire and pull a nice 6" or 8" loop, and tuck it into the back of the 110 boxes. That way, if you ever change your mind in the future, and want to turn that 110 box into a 3 phase or vise versa--- You already have the excess wire there in each box--- and you can just pull out the loop and cut it, and splice in your new plugs, ect.. It takes a little more wire to do it that way--- to have loops in every box. but it's well worth it later if you end up moving things around and need to swap your systems; because it's all right there, no need to re-pull new wire, and you have plenty of extra length to pull from if your tails get too short, ect.. It's good practice on a busy shop system like this.
@kevCarrico2 жыл бұрын
great video, tom - thank you!
@Tagawichin2 жыл бұрын
Careful you just jinxedyourself, removing a full bath from the shop is bad luck. The first time you start a cut and then get that rumble from down under, you will probably miss having a closer throne. Although an empty 5gal bucket is useful for a lot of other thing and takes up much less floor space.
