Hi Peter, I know this is quite early, but when you do Luck Runs Out in the Ocean Saga, I recommend Crashite or Jen's animatic on it. Until recently, Lampycry's was the only complete animatic, which was why other reacters used that one, but for the first watch the animatic can be misleading due to Lampycry's interpretation. Crashite and Jen have made complete animatics and they stay more true to the story. I'm really enjoying your reactions and I hope you enjoy the the Cyclops saga 😊

On a relisten to this song, pay attention to how Athena just belts Miiiiiiind until the end of the song where she's getting comfortable with Odyessus and joins him in his changing notes instead on one solid note
@piperpanda65877 ай бұрын
I didn't even notice it till you pointed it out. Athena normally says "mind" on one long note, but changes it the second time she sings alongside ody. Thanks for pointing that out XD
@bagszi7 ай бұрын
@@piperpanda6587 This is a very cool way for showing Odysseus's friendly influence on Athena. Also returns in Goodbye, where she does start to sing the harmony on "Bye" but then it disappears on the last one, where she ends up just singing it on one note, since she is parting from Odysseus.

Jorge pretty much gave everyone their own instrument and motifs so you're able to hear who's appearing, or hear their "incluence" in the background. Ody's is a guitar, and depending on his mood the type of guitar changes.

I like how you point out that Athena and Odysseus sing the same notes but for her it's easier, just like how he had to strain as a mortal to follow a goddess. I missed that parallel. Looking forward to the next saga.

I didn’t notice the flute before! That’s really cool, because if I remember correctly (I might be wrong), Athena was the one who invented the flute in Greek mythology (and she got made fun of for it…?)
@whatismylife69277 ай бұрын
Oh… just did a quick google search: “Athene had invented the flute, and then cast it aside because it distorted the features of the player. Marsyas took it up, and became so skillful as to challenge Apollo”.

Awesome reaction! Something cool about Odysseus' and Athena's harmony you mentioned that you liked is that it starts off with Athena going high and Odysseus doing a run for the first one but by the second Athena changes hers to a run to match Odysseus and harmonize. Indicating she is trying to adapt to him. This is confirmed by Jorge.
@elodiepollock73266 ай бұрын
12:28 listening to you here just made me realise that this also serves the plot. Them singing the same note and Odysseus having to strain more to do the same thing as Athena tracks. He is trained by her (or will be) and has to work hard at things that we can presume come more naturally to her or that she is just more experienced in. But more than that, she is a goddess and that alone gives her the upper hand in their dynamic and her singing this melody with more ease underlines that beautifully

I just binged your coverage of the Troy Saga and absolutely fell in love with your analysis of the musicality in these pieces. Really hope you go through each of them. The Cyclops Saga is my absolute favorite of them all. Jorge has said on his platforms that he loves to use specific instrumentation to represent each character and their emotions in any given scene. Often using them or certain sounds to foreshadow or convey emotion completely on its own. I'm curious to hear your thoughts as you progress through the sagas. These detailed analyzes make me that much more obsessed 😅

Slight spoiler for the music, but not the plot: --- Every major character in EPIC has a primary instrument(s) associated with them. Piano's so heavy in this song because it's Athena's instrument.

@stars_and_lattes30786 ай бұрын
Jorge does this thing with the music in EPIC where each character kind of has both a signature instrument, as well as a musical motif! For Athena, it's the piano. You mention it frequently as well, but the electric guitar is Odysseus's, though Odysseus has two instruments, that being the electric guitar for when he's the commander, and is more prevalent in action segments. His other one is an acoustic guitar/violin, which is used for more softer moments where Odysseus shows more of his vulnerabilities. Another thing he does a lot is for the more mythological characters/gods is that they use more electronic instrumentation in their songs, while he doesn't do it as much for more mortal/human songs throughout the Musical! It's all super cool stuff that I love :)

Brass instruments feature more heavily in the Ocean Saga, and I'm insanely excited for you to get to that one! Brass function as a bit of a signal there, especially in the songs "Storm" and "Ruthlessness", and I'm excited to see if you can pick up on what that signal might be.
@disableddragonborn7 ай бұрын
There's one instrument that is very relevant to Ancient Greek legends that I'm excited to see if you pick up on it at a certain part in the future because it's a certain character's motif, but the character isn't directly involved at the part I'm referring to, but it's hinting that the character is present.

Anyone that is caught up I would imagine know what I'm referring to.

Just wanted to pop in and say there's a reason the piano is so prevalent! Every character in Epic has an instrument assigned to them. Odysseus is the guitar and Athena is the piano. Also, the reason why he loves synth so much, is that it represents magic! Which is why when gods are present in music, it tends to get synth-y cause they're all magical and stuff. Also that ear shifting thing when you were talking about the flutes was super cool! Caught me so offguard.

Little piece of beauty in how due to Jorge having to strain his voice a bit to have Odysseus sign on the same note as Athena it kind of really feels like young Ody showing his hubris by pushing himself to match a goddess
@Abbygail3635 күн бұрын
It's also cool that when Athena and Odysseus first sing "mind" together, Athena holds the note while Ody has a riff ,and the second time they sing "mind" than Athena matches Ody with the riff, showing that she's attuned herself to him a bit.
@araluen41097 ай бұрын
Fun fact, almost everyone in the musical has an instrument and riff/motif designated to them. Odysseus' is the guitar (nylon strings for softer moments, electric for when he's being particularly daring or cunning) and Athena's is the piano, which is why the piano and guitar start playing together when Odysseus and Athena get together. There's also a specific "danger motif" that plays whenever danger is nearby (you can hear it in this song!). Plus, Jorge writes the music so that the more gods or magic are involved, the more synths are used. That's half the fun of listening to the musical, is trying to figure out what the music itself is telling you.
@hannahhester83767 ай бұрын
Oh my God!! So I've been hearing Athena wrong this entire time. That line she says after Odysseus gets her to reveal herself, I thought it was, "Well done, you lied to me, what's your name?" When it's actually, "Well done, ENLIGHTEN me." But actually both work at that part perfectly because Athena is the goddess of truth. I actually went back, and kinda sang both my "wrong" interpretation and what it actually is, and they work.

So from what I know each character, they have their own instruments, so Ody dueting with the guitar in Full speed ahead and Athena with the piano here are great examples When it comes to the background synthetic and orchestral is that 90% of the time its brought it by something more than human, especially when it's not other characters doing those backing vocals So the background synth "voices" here is Athena bringing in her own backing and you'll see it with more character down the line, and in the main cast of character
