I think trailmakers does their destruction physics with raytracing, so impacts are completely directional. Since kan's wheel's axels are attached pretty far in 11:15 any directional impact would have a hard time hitting it. You would have to score a hit on the back or front side, so the impact would penetrate through the base and into the wheel, or hit the wheel directly. This explains why 15:03 the far wheel falls off because the impact traveled through the vehicle base and hit the other axel. Im pretty sure he hit the left side, but I'm not sure. He could have just clipped the far wheel directly, but the angle of the bus would make it weird for kozmo the clip. This explains 22:00 when the top of kan's bus explodes. The way the bus collides into scrapman makes the hypothetical raytrace angle at the top of the bus. The force would penetrate all the way through the top section, but not the bottom since the raytrace isn't pointed at that. I think the raytrace spreads out like a fan. If trailmakers does use raytracing, then scrapman's and kozmo's creations would take more damage since the force would be "conducted" through the bricks on wheels. TLDR: Kan likely accidentally abused the game's physics.

The bus worked using the same principle employed for crash protection in real vehicles: crumple zone. Only blocks that are directly impacted by another surface have a chance to break, and this impact slows the ramming vehicle down. This is why at low speeds the ramming vehicle stops without much damage, but with enough speed it can tear directly through to the seat. Because Kan's bus had so much space between either end and the wheels, and because the wheels are only scrapped if the blocks connecting them to the seat break, Kan's wheels had more protection than the wheels that were directly covered. The same principle applies to his seat. An impacting vehicle would hit the mass of blocks at either end of the bus and have their impact slowed to a relative stop before it ever reached the parts that were structurally important. This is why hits to the side were far more effective.

As someone else said, the bus is made up of larger blocks with a lot of gaps so you only lost a bit at a time. Also I think the code sees the shear mass of structural blocks with no extra complexity and gave you the "I'm bigger and simpler than you" advantage.

I think the way trailmakers destruction physics works benefits kan. I think the impact force is done directionally into the vehicle, kind of like a bullet. The side hits on the bus only penetrated the thin layer on the outside and stopped because there was no contact with other blocks. It would explain why the top part of kan';s bus exploded. The force from the impact was channeled upward at an angle into the top of the frame, which destroyed all the blocks, but it hit upward, causing the top to be destroyed, but not the bottom. Scrapman and kozmo had blocks of metal, letting the force penetrate through the whole vehicle, doing damage to more of the vehicle at a time. Since the directional impacts were never directed at the wheel connection point (the part where the axel connects to the inside of the bus) the wheel never fell off. I'm just guessing here, but I think it makes sense.

@@ovencake523 Incorrect: the top portion of Kan's bus exploded because the blocks connecting it to the body all broke. As it was no longer connected to the seat, and it hadn't been removed via a detachable block, the game immediately turned it into scrap.

fun fact, modern tanks have pockets of empty space in their armor matrix, the empty spaces help break up impacts and destroy the projectile. what is happening is the bus has lots of empty space combined with a deep bumper area to take repeated eroding hits. combine that with the upper structure and the other two vehicles put their seat on top and unarmored, the superstructure of the bus could scrape right over the armor and hit the seat.

Theory 1: Spaced Armor: The battle bus used inadvertently used spaced armor. The other two competitors were more heavily armored but were also more compact. Let's say Scrap Man gets rammed and a 2x2 block area gets destroyed or takes X damage. The same impact might do 3x3 block of destruction on the battle bus, since it has no armor. But since the battle bus is so big, a lot of the damage is just impacting air. A massive impact on one of the cooler looking vehicles, might take out both wheels, that would be nearly impossible on the battle buss. Theory 2: The shank theory. As the battle bus got his it broke up into kind of sharp edges. Hitting a sharp edge might do more damage for the same reason someone stabbing you with a dagger hurts more than punching you with the same forces. Just theories: one, both or none could be true.

I think the way Trailmakers calculates damage is the same way Robocraft used to: damage to a block then whatever is connected. It's different now but the connection-based damage made for some insanely complicated robots. Some even took the time to make bots with only triangle corners.

Space in between blocks was good. When a piece would be chunked off it left a lot still there leaving a lot of space for your driver seat. I think that if you had had another layer in between the exterior and the car seat you would have won even unanimously. Also you having your wheels on the exterior seemed to help, since unless they could take out a wheel you were unable to be flipped

Vid idea. Each person makes a vehicle for 1 specific thing like demolition, flying, precision droppings or driving. And everyone joins in using each persons machine to complete the objective the vehicles as made for. Like a derby or longest glider run. Hit targets from max height. You know that sorta thing each person selects a task they build a vehicle for that task, then each person uses the same vehicle to complete said task

I honestly think that it was either because there wasn't such a solid rigid block it was better able to absorb impacts, or because after the initial hit on each side you just became a knife that would cut through them. All that armor doesn't do them any good if you remove the support below it.

Bus is 90% non-critical blocks, meaning it can take a lot of damage and it mostly just cosmetic. Basically, it's a big piece of meat to chew through.

I think I found out how can killed Scrap man in the last official match. If you watch the video in slow motion, Kan's back right wheel goes in between Scrap man's wheel wells, right where his seat is. This would have disconnected Scrap Man's seat from the rest of his vehicle. I also wanted to say how entertaining this video was for me.
