There is also "private Mavericks" which is a good place for beginners. During sub-tide, the exposed beach reef is covered with sea anemones, you walk on them and they can take it somehow. If you try to get one loose it is pretty hard to do. The sub-tide is also when people pick up clams and other weird edibles.

I admire those guys for their courage. It must be such an out-of-this-world feeling of rush that makes them do it

Don't see any long rides on this epic day though. But yeah you're right, Mavericks is like a small Waimea, or even a small Ghost Trees. But it's mostly like a right hand Margaret River, without the Box up the beach for the tube freaks.
@stephenmwyatt212 жыл бұрын
There is a reef about 700meters out to about, it is at a 40-degree angle to the beach, so it guides the water one direction, over a shallow reef, just like the one that proceeds from the beach to about 500m out.

I live like 15 minutes away from this place and I never knew it was so close by. It's funny cuz Half Moon Bay is such a small quiet community but when the waves hit it ain't quiet no more!

Hey bro, look at that wahini ride that wave. There's sum super ultimate gnarly, radical surf that needs to be shredded braw! I remember one time, I slept in my Suby and was the first one to pull into Breck next morning. I seriously could NOT wait to shred mad powder! I jibbed till I was gassed that day braw! !

Is it true that these waves were discovered from the smoking area at a high school by the guy I guess who made this whole thing famous? He surfed it by himself for years? I'm not a surfer but I'm just starting to learn the history of this sport and I have to say I'm impressed!
@melly91813 жыл бұрын
Ya know I have to say that when I think of surfers I imagine a stereotypical lazy, dumb individual doing it but......it takes a hell of a lot of skill and training to do this without dying. I am amazed. This is incredible and beautiful to watch. I could never do it, though I would like to. I am really impressed and in awe of these surfers.

@arpadpihes Also, remember that all waves slow down as they reach the shore, causing their wavelength to decrease, thus making them taller, till they break.
@strelnikoff715 жыл бұрын
Sounds scary - just the way I like it... meaning, I'd have adrenaline rush to get out there, get in lineup somewhere and then I'd be like "And now what???"... I'd probably sit on the board watchin' other people catchin waves and then thinking - I can do it - go for one and than break into 1000 pieces :) Respect man!

@Truth5212 because the seafloor topography leading up to the surf spot is like a gigantic ramp and the currents go right up it and then when the get to the end of this seafloor "ramp", viola, The signature Maverick surf.

Video with HORIZON has nice atmosphere, a nice tune... steady now. This reminds me of a day around 1995-6 I caught atleast 20 quick 3rd reef STEAMERS cloud breaks, just a single big drop peeling off the shoulder right back to pole position. 2 or 3 others but I was the young ace. Finally I decided to try & ride one all the way in, and was in trouble [out of 'current' luck] as the mush drove schlept me into a mob of angry has-beens [run over that lazy carp? hehehe lol]

Sick. Sick video. There's a moment, right before the drop in, on the crest of the wave when it looks like the guys are just suspended - a moment of weightlessness, then sheer unadulterated power and speed and AWE. Mavericks, with it's grey water and angry looking waves looks worse (or better depending on your perspective) than Pipeline or Tasmania. Scares the bejesus out of me.
