Agreed, one of the most difficult 30-mile hikes out there. But there are those who get it done in a day!

@@Beertownbill Yes, that's true. I did see a bunch of trail runners along the trail. That's quite a feat.

I enjoyed your video--brings back some memories of my young adult years. Being born in Longview and spending most of my school years in Kalama, and then moving to Woodland and graduating high school there, I spent a lot of time in my youth traipsing around St. Helens and Adams. St. Helens has by far had the largest place in my life. In 91 I climbed it with a friend, in 93 I did the Loowit (no fees or reservations required--just a sign in wilderness permit station as I recall), with another friend, and in June of '02 I proposed to my girlfriend at the foot of the June Lake waterfall. We married in September of that year and are still married today. It looks like there's a lot more "green" on the northern side of the mountain than there was in 93 when I hiked the Loowit. When we did the Loowit trail, we started either at the Sheep Canyon or Blue Lake trailhead--age and the passage of time prevents me from remembering which one! I remember we bivouacked just off the trail on the northern slopes, and then ended up completing the loop the next day, arriving at our car after dark using flashlights to stay on trail. My hiking partner was starting to have trouble with his knees and was afraid if we camped a second night he might not be able to continue the next day. I'm just getting back into backpacking this year after not having done any trips in several years. Tomorrow I'm leaving my home in central Oregon and heading up to Olympic National Park for a 5 day/4 night 54 mile lollipop loop out of Staircase and heading up the N. Fork Skokomish River. I'll be looping out around Anderson, O'Neil and LaCrosse passes and visiting Marmot and Hart lakes. I might just have to put the Loowit on my list for next year...

Thank you for sharing your backpacking adventures. And that's an awesome proposal you did. Congrats to you and your wife for sticking together. The Loowit trail is definitely not an easy trail but it is very unique. The north side is for sure getting more green. There are still no fees or reservations needed which is nice. I was thinking about hiking around Mt. Adams this year or going around part of it. But I will definitely do the Eagle Creek Trail which is supposed to be one of the most beautiful trails in the U.S. Have a blast in Olympic NP. Never been there. I'm sure it is going to be awesome. It would be cool if you did the Loowit again, especially 3 decades later. Thanks for checking out the video.

haha yes. First backpacking trip I have filmed. Highly recommend this hike. It is super challenging but well worth it. An amazing experience to complete this beast of a trail. I'm planning the Timberline trail around Mt. Hood next summer.

A journey I will never forget. Super beautiful and challenging indeed. The Plains of Abraham was like Death Valley so right up your alley. The entire hike was very peaceful and magical is a great way to describe it. This is why I love the PNW.
