I would also like to note, it's implied that Odysseus already knew. In puppeteer he pushes him away, and that's brushed off as the grief from ruthlessness. Then in Scylla he doesn’t react, he just sighs and tell him to light the torches. Odysseus always KNEW it was Eurylochus who opened the bag. He just didn't want to acknowledged it.

@@samuraizwb and there's also the reason he didn't want to acknowledge it. Because if he did, he would have to get rid of Eurylochus. He'd rather not acknowledge what he knew to protect his brother. But by the time Scylla comes around. He's already embraced being a monster, and in monster he says "if I became the monster to everyone but us" and its implied to be about him and his crew. But in reality he means his family, so once they get to scylla's lair. He doesn't care about who he must sacrifice. And then Eurylochus confesses. And he tells him to light the torches. Knowing that Eurylochus might keep one for himself.

its also a call back to Ody and Zeus in Horse and the Infant. Zeus gives him an option that time too, and just like then Ody begs not to have to. That's why Zeus is so certain at the start of the song that Ody's crew was good as dead. What's crazy to me, is the way that eury doesn't even try to attack Odysseus in thunderbringer. He knows that Odysseus is being backed by the king of the gods, no matter how upset or mad he might be. He knows that he's going to die either way. It is also just terrifying, that Odysseus was face to face with all of his men. All of them about to kill him in thunderbringer as they charge towards him hoping to kill him before Zeus can defend him. And then they all were vaporized instantly. That scares me to no end.

Something I learned in Mutiny's comment section that the animator does represent to a degree is the fact that the whole reason Zeus steps up to the plate in the story is cuz Helios was upset and threatened to head to the underworld and never raise the sun ever again if Zeus didn't do something. Zeus would have never got involved is what it sounds like if Helios hadn't come crying to him.

It’s crazy how Eurylochus also had a torch but passed it to one of his comrades meaning Odysseus meant for him to die too. And in thunder bringer how the crew is singing the part from just a man and how Penelope is singing that part from suffering showing the things he fought so hard for pit against each other. In Eurylochus's defense, he tried to tell Odysseus right away, but was told he could wait. This sounds like it was actually the first quiet moment he's had a chance to tell him since, and also it was shaming him that he hadn't yet. I really think Scylla's line "deep down you hide a reason for shame" was directed at both Ody and Eury - Eury for opening the wind bag, and Ody for having already decided to go straight to the sacrifice route rather than trying to fight. As far as your question about alternatives, a) there wasn't a good one, no, but b) Eury makes some damn good points: as we were reminded in Luck Runs out, Ody took 600 men to ten years of war and didn't lose a single one. He made a plan for the Cyclops, got everyone back from Circe, just now saved them from the sirens. Even the greatest loss of life so far with Poseidon, Eury has been feeling guilt for that, too, because Ithaca was *in sight* when Eury opened the windbag. They were almost home, and because *he* opened the bag, more than 500 of the men he calls brothers were slaughtered. But now Ody, who refused to leave the transformed men behind with Circe even when Eury wanted to run, didn't even try to think of a way to sneak or fight their way past Scylla. He just went straight to sacrifice.

It's unlikely that they had an alternative besides going through Scylla's cave - but part of what Eurylochus is so angry about is that Odysseus sacrificed them without them having a say in it, while making sure he himself was safe. Remember, the entire crew had beeswax in their ears, and Odysseus only knew the route because he read the siren's lips. At the start of Scylla, Eurylochus says "you're quiet today", which doesn't really sound like what you'd say if you knew you were about to head to the lair of a monster known for eating people. This is basically confirmed when Eurylochus says "Captain, something... approaches". The men likely had no idea they were going to Scylla's lair, and no idea of what was about to happen. But Odysseus did. His entire plan was to sacrifice six of his men to make sure that *he* got home to his family, because he's willing to do what he must to survive - to get home. Not necessarily to get his men home. It's only natural that you realize, after surviving being walked into a trap, that you were absolutely played. It's only natural to be unable to trust your captain, after that.

It's fairly unlikely that'd work: they'd have to keep the beeswax in their ears for who knows how long, and at this point Ody doesn't really trust his crew to carry out orders anymore. If Odysseus had brought up the cost before entering, they could have come up with a plan, and even if they couldn't, they could have asked for volunteers or draw straws. Even after Odysseus betrayed them, Eurylochus still waited until he woke up hoping and believing his Captain would convince him of another way so he didn’t have to kill the cow, but Odysseus doesn’t, just like on the ship. He said, “listen to me and you’ll see them (your families) again.” He broke this promise by being the sole person choosing who lives and dies. There is a command/multiple leaders for a reason. His crew didn't even believe they could get back home, and since they always relied on Odysseus, him dying would just end their journey there.

@@merlinthefrenchie well then remind me to never take part in any group activity you would lead or choose a leader for. Regardless of the behavior of some of your crew, a captain should never sacrifice his people for his own sake of getting home, that’s not leadership.

Also keep in mind that Odysseus is the ONLY one on deck during Suffering, so none of the others know that Scylla's Lair was their only way home. The others still hold naive hope that they could find some path and defeat any foe despite also condemning Odysseus for the same mentality earlier. It's a story of perspective, hypocrisy, flaws, human nature, and pure conflict.

So this is how l've seen this play out in my head, far different. So Odysseus chooses his crew, and they're all completely shocked. His eyes are downcast as Zeus starts slaughtering them, frying them with lightning one by one. Odysseus tries to hold tight to Eurylochus, hoping maybe he can at least save him. However, Zeus grabs the spear of one of Odysseus' fallen men, and in a split second where they're separated because of the boat's movements, Zeus impales Eurylochus. He holds him up in front of Odysseus, and then fries him too before throwing him and the rest of the decimated crew down into the water, their souls likely going to Tartarus for getting on too many Gods' nerves. Yes I know it’s gruesome, but it fits this saga. Eury slitting a cows throat, the entire Scylla slaughter, the killing of the sirens.

I have watched so many versions of all of these. It will take too long for me to go over all the ones I like but I will just talk about THunder Bringer. When it comes to the Thunder Bringer animation the two favorites is Neil Illustrator and Duvetbox. Neil making Zeus into a character like the Genie from Aladin. He is so menacingly sexual too, which is very in character for the god. All the characters are extremely emotive and expessive that you can really feel the work put into what he did. That said, there are touches he misses, that Duvetbox captures. Duvet actually has them on the ship, where the event happens traditionally in the story. Zeus destroys the ship and Odysseus floats away on wreckage. Duvet also draws the men actually looking like they are starving, making them all thin and desperate looking. Zeus also is far more menacing looking in Duvet's version. Rather than being larger than life, Zeus comes down to their level on the ship and has this lean but fit look to him. When he comes down during the line, "Apply all the pressure", Duvet has all the mortals grab their ears and hunch over, showing that Zeus increased the barometric pressure there to humble the mortals. The final touch I really enjoy for it is when Odysseus says, "I know", his eyes glow yellow like Zeus'. Showing Zeus and he are on the same page... Like Zeus says, "If I was to make you choose, the lives of your men and crew or your own, why do I think they'll lose?" Zeus had Odysseus' number from the very beginning when he tasked Odysseus to kill that baby.

The other option that Odysseus had instead of Scylla was to go the other way and face Charybdis. The sister monster of Scylla. The difference is, with Charybdis, she will kill everyone, without a doubt. Odysseus knew that with Scylla, if you gave her 6 people as "sacrifices," she would leave the rest of the crew alone. If he went with Charybdis instead, everyone would've died. He chose the lesser of the two evils.

thunderbringer animatic was good, but it didn't accurately depict where they were as they were on the ship when zeus showed up and the seas were calm as zeus most likely ordered both aeolus and poseidon to calm the seas, ody was floating in the water at the end. This is not head canon it's what jay said he pictures the situation going

It's not so much the fact that Odysseus sacrificed them, it's that he didn't even tell them, nor give anyone the chance to willingly volunteer if they wanted to. This shows that Odysseus is willing to sacrifice anyone in order to get home, which, as you can imagine, puts eurylochus and the rest of the crew in a very precarious situation. For all they know, THEY could be next if Odysseus decides he has to sacrifice more people to get home. The absolute last thing you want to do as a captain or any kind of leader is show the men willing to fight for you that you view them as expendable. They trusted him up till that point because they believed he would still try to get them all out alive. All the previous deaths were in spite of Odysseus's efforts, but these 6 men died BECAUSE of Odysseus
