Melters tend to lose against war factories when techs and their numbers on both sides grow, you only really need one melter to connect, so building many of them is usually a waste They worked here I think because Grubby lacked in summoning tech/war factories

In my mind the lore is: after horrors of a solar system war society agreed to replace war for entertainment using the shells of war machines now under simple autonomous controls. So many machines have cockpits but nobody is inside them
