I was a lifeguard on the N.Shore from 1973 to 1978 and loved it. I worked with Eddie Aikau, Butch Van Artsdalen and several others, but when I left Hawaii and the surf scene I never made it back. Your blogs help to bring it all back and give me a good laugh. Thanks for all the fun and memories. I spent a lot of hours in the lifeguard stand watching the Pipe and those were the days when we had to swim or use a 13 foot board. In any case, thanks for the fun videos. Scott

As a kid watching surfers I always believed that wiping out on big waves couldn’t be as bad as adults say it is. So I was very fearless and took my dads Safari 7’4 wide and went in. First wave and a few after I stood up. How hard can this be (said with attitude)..then one day my dad comes to tell my wise ass that the waves are 6 feet 😎 with great courage and confidence that I’ll prove to the locals what a good surfer I am at such a young age, I paddled for my first 6 foot plus’ wave and holyyyy sheeeet, I didn’t even have time to stand up. I must’ve looked like a dead frog falling head first down the lip of a wave. I was DONE!!!! Massive respect for the ocean developed instantaneously!!!
