EPICA is a Dutch symphonic metal band, formed in 2002 by guitarist Mark Jansen, after parting was with his former band, After Forever. Mark had co-founded AF( Floor's 1st band she joined at age 16) Lead singer is Simone Simons. She switched to this style of singing in training ,from pop, after hearing Tarja with Nightwish. Coen Janssen on keyboards, Isaac Delahaya on guitar, bassist Rob Van der Loo, and drummer Arien van Weesenbeek complete the current lineup. This Retrospect show was EPICA's 10th anniversary show in The Netherlands, 2013, with a full orchestra and choir. A 24 song , 3 hour show, and Simone was about 3 months pregnant. Floor joined them for 2 songs, the other is a classical piece called Stabat Mater Dolorosa. They had their 20th anniversary show last September. Sancta Terra is not typical EPICA, in that Mark adds some harsh vocals in a lot of songs, and some songs include a bit of Latin. This one from their 3rd album, The Divine Conspiracy in 2007. 8 albums and several EP's to date. They also have some beautiful ballads. I know you prefer less heavy, so try the ballad Rivers, several versions to choose from, the acapella one at the Omega Alive virtual show, live in Chile, or the live with Apocalyptic as guests. She had already been singing about two hours, so they boosted her microphone for this duet to compensate fatigue & diminished lung capacity. The song is about a suicide bomber who dies & thinks that he's in heaven, but is actually in hell where he belongs.

According to the band, the album deals with the theory that “as a test, God created all kinds of different religions and released those upon humanity to see if they would be able to find the true nature of them, realizing that in all religions it is actually the same”.

Epica's leadsinger is Simone Simons, a dutch soprano. She has got one of the brightest voices in the scene. She can belt, operatic, pop, she can do it all, except for grunting but that's been taken care of by Mark Jansen in this band. This anniversary show lasted for almost 3 hours but she went for it all evening even beeing pregnant at the time, incredible! She is one of the few that can match Floor. Altough they shared the stage a few times they never studied together nor were they roommates as some might suggest. Floor is 4 years older than Simone. Not only does Simone sing heavenly, she also writes about 50% of all Epica's lyrics. So yes she is a very talented lady with 6 years of training in classical singing. Epica was founded in 2002 en released their 1st album in 2003 when Simone was just 17 years old! The band has become one of the leading forces in the symphonic metal scene with 8 studio albums under their belts already.

Epica took their name from an album by the band Kamelot. Simone is married to the keyboard player of Kamelot, Oliver Palotai. Mark Jansen, no blood relation to Floor, is a founder of Epica and was in Floor's band After Forever! Kamelot and Nightwish have a history together - see the YT doco "The Denver Debacle" which show this relationship - also with Elize Ryd (Amaranthe) and Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy). Floor and Simone had the same vocal coach. Metal is family. Ayreon "The Day The World Breaks Down" has 11 top singers! Floor and Hannes, the dummer with Sabaton, have a daughter, Freya, and another one on the way!

You got it right with Floor Jansen. ❤ Perfect Dutch pronounciation! You said it's not your kind of music. Perhaps Stabat mater dolorosa is more of your liking. It's one of the oldest Christian songs song by Simone and Floor. I was 'Floored'. So beautiful. But then again, I like heavy metal to Bach etc. Of it's good, I like it.

They sound great together although Simone is less versatile as cannot hit metal tones and certainly not growl. Floor doing full windmills but Simone Simons of Epica more subdued. I though maybe because she was three months pregnant and then recently saw Floor windmilling and headbanging although she is currently at least four months pregnant. And Floor performed O Holy Night in Finnish when 6 months pregnant in 2016.

This was the second last song of the main set of this show so Simone had already been on stage for well over 2 hours. Simone was 3 months pregnant during this concert. Try Chasing the Dragon from the same show, fantastic performance by Simone.
