Welcome to the world of Epica. Formed in 2002, quite gothic in their early years, gradually added more death meral, black metal and other influences but always symphonic. They are the heaviest and the most symphonic of symphonic metal bands. Lead singer Simone Simons is a classically trained soprano. You should check outbtheir very latest live release, Arcana. There is a music video but the live version, again with orchestra and choir is stunning. You have been recommended Santa Terra with Floor from the same show but Floor and Simone also sang a 13th century hymn, Stabat Mater Dolorosa, at the same show. Definitely a magical moment.

Very nice reaction. I am surprised you haven’t heard of them considering all the bands you listened to. This is the peak of the iceberg. Epica is very diverse. Keep diving in 😉

this show was in 2012. now, 12 years later, this band has even more production, even more professionalism and experience and now they are simply at the very top of their genre. An absolutely amazing team, where you will hear almost everything from death black metal to jazz. 2 months ago they played 2 concerts with a full orchestra and there are already two live recordings from this concert in amazing quality, so I am surprised that you were offered to watch such old material 😁 I advise you to watch something from the fresh concert "symphonic synergy" live at the AFAS

Lots of recommendations for Epica for years! Nighwish's heavier sibling.

Note that "Consign to Oblivion" is one of their heaviest songs. It is popular among reaction channels precisely because of the bombastic style and shock factor it has, but if you are wanting to shield your better half from the heaviest music, that is something to be aware of. On the other end of the scale, "Delirium" (from the same Retrospect show you just saw) is a ballad that I recommend. Fun fact, the singer was three months pregnant during this three-hour Retrospect concert. If you want something else entirely, Epica recently did their version of Camille Saint-Saëns' 1874 piece "La Danse Macabre", which they gave lyrics and the extra title "The ghost in me". This has both a music video and an official live video from their recent shows in Amsterdam, where they were again joined by a full orchestra and choir on stage. I recommend the live version of course. PS: The Netherlands is not in Scandinavia 🙂

"Consign to Oblivion" you should listen to, SIMONE SIMONS as Old Egyptian GODDESS.

It's amazing to me how knowledgeable people like you still have great bands (like Epica here) to discover. There's so much music out there and not enough time Epica is often discovered after Nightwish since they belong to that "female fronted symphonic metal" world Their sound is very different though, usually heavier and some songs feature harsh vocals from their guitarist and founder Mark Jansen So there guturals here too but not in all the songs and mostly as a secondary character to Simone's (lead vocalist) voice, not for the full song They have a lot of material already, in more than 20 years: 8 studio albums (9th on the way), several EPs and multiple live performances. From those, this show of 10th anniversary Retrospect and Omega Alive are the most impressive to me Arguably the most in form band within the genre, so if you like this kind of music you can look no further

And 3 months pregnant. And Epica growls a lot, just not on this song. They also do a lot of thrash. AND they do a lot of really beautiful ballads.
@scifimonkey37 күн бұрын
Tbf they don’t growl a lot. There are a few songs where the growling is predominant but mostly Simone is predominant or it is a 50/50 trade off of the contrasting styles

I am absolutely amazed that someone who knows Floor and Nightwish is ignorant of the existence of this band. The two MOST brilliant symphonic metal bands are Nightwish and Epica. Floor & Simone are long time friends. Mark Jansen (no relation) founded both Epica and After Forever which Floor joined at aged 16.

Why call me ignorant? I heard one Nightwish song. I might know some bands that would blow you away. I listen way more to progressive metal and jazz fusion. This was amazing and I hope the fans of this genre are amazing too.

I know but this genre is very big with Scandinavian countries. That's why I misspoke. Mostly Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

What do you mean? Are you telling me the Dutch and the Danish aren’t the same people and you don’t have polar bears in Købendam? 😳

I would totally go see any of those bands (Nightwish, etc) live, but I don't listen to them on a day to day basis...
